If a laptop runs hotter immediately after a repaste, assume a repair-related problem until you have ruled one out. The usual culprits are an unevenly seated heatsink, loose or incorrectly tightened screws, the wrong thermal material or pad thickness, incomplete coverage, or a fan cable or fan problem. Blocked vents, a changed fan profile, or a heavier workload can also explain the increase. Start with checks that do not require opening the case, then use the exact model’s service documentation before touching the thermal module again.
What a sudden temperature increase after repasting usually means
A repaste should not be judged by a single number taken under different conditions. Compare the same application, game, benchmark, power mode, ambient temperature and fan profile before and after the work. Idle readings and gaming or rendering readings are not interchangeable, and a higher room temperature can move every sensor upward.
When fan noise or heat changes immediately after the chassis was opened, however, the repair itself deserves first attention. The heatsink may not be making even contact with the CPU or GPU, its fasteners may be loose or tightened in the wrong sequence, or a pad or putty layer may be holding the cooler away from a chip. A fan connector can also be partly unplugged or a fan can have been damaged during disassembly. ASUS lists improper cooler installation, loose clips, cracked or uneven paste and blocked airflow among possible overheating causes in its overheating and fan troubleshooting guidance.

The thermal interface may be wrong even when the paste looks neatly spread. Some laptops use ordinary paste on one location and a pad, putty, phase-change material or liquid metal on another. Substituting a generic paste, changing a specified pad thickness or omitting a small thermal pad can reduce contact and increase temperatures.
#1 Best Overall
- CONSISTENT QUALITY: Our thermal paste packaging design has evolved over time, but the formula has remained the same, ensuring reliable performance.
- EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE: ARCTIC MX-4 thermal paste is made of carbon microparticles, guaranteeing extremely high thermal conductivity. This ensures that heat from the CPU/GPU is dissipated quickly & efficiently
- SAFE APPLICATION: The MX-4 is metal-free and non-electrical conductive which eliminates any risks of causing short circuit, adding more protection to the CPU and VGA cards
- HIGH DURABILITY: In contrast to metal and silicon thermal compound, the MX-4 does not compromise over time. Once applied, you do not need to apply it again as it will last at least for 8 years
- EASY TO APPLY: With an ideal consistency, the MX-4 is very easy to use, even for beginners
Record the symptoms before changing anything else
Make a short record while the problem is reproducible. It gives you and a service technician something useful to compare and prevents a sequence of guesses from obscuring the original fault.
- Write down the exact manufacturer, model number and hardware configuration, including the CPU and GPU.
- Record CPU and GPU temperatures, fan speed if the system exposes it, clock speeds, power mode and the application being used.
- Note room conditions as closely as practical, whether the laptop is on a hard desk or soft material, and whether intake or exhaust vents are obstructed.
- Record whether the system throttles, becomes unusually loud, freezes, shuts down or shows an error.
- Compare like-for-like runs. An idle desktop, a game, a video export and a synthetic stress test represent different loads.
Do not keep running a demanding test if the laptop is repeatedly shutting down, severely throttling, producing a burning smell or showing another obvious hardware danger. Those symptoms call for power-down and qualified service rather than more measurements.
Checks that do not require opening the laptop
- Move it to a hard, level surface. A bed, blanket or lap can cover an intake and make a correctly assembled cooler appear defective. A stand can improve clearance, but it cannot repair poor heatsink contact.
- Inspect every intake and exhaust. Look for dust, lint or objects blocking the grilles. ASUS explains that debris can restrict airflow; clean only with a method approved for the model and avoid forcing contaminants deeper into the chassis.
- Observe the fans. Under a repeatable load, verify that the expected fan starts and changes speed. A silent fan is not automatically faulty—some profiles stop fans at light load—but a fan that never runs when the system is hot needs diagnosis.
- Run the manufacturer’s hardware or fan diagnostic. Follow the support instructions for the exact model. MSI’s notebook troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends checking ventilation, fan modes and diagnostics before contacting support.
- Check software settings. A performance or turbo profile selected after the repair can raise power and temperature without any mechanical fault. Compare the same profile used for the earlier measurement.
- Stop if the symptoms are unsafe. Burning odor, visible liquid-metal spill, a fan that cannot spin, repeated thermal shutdowns or a swollen battery are reasons to power down and arrange qualified service. This is conservative safety advice, not a universal manufacturer threshold.
How reassembly can make cooling worse
Uneven heatsink contact
The cooler must sit flat on the intended chip surfaces. If it is lowered at an angle, shifted while screws are being tightened or caught on a cable, one edge can contact while another has a gap. The result is often a rapid rise in one chip’s temperature and aggressive fan behavior. Do not try to correct this by adding an arbitrary extra layer of paste; the mechanical seating has to be fixed.

Loose, misplaced or incorrectly tightened fasteners
A screw that is missing, in the wrong hole or only partly tightened can leave uneven pressure. Some modules use numbered screws or a specified cross-tightening order, and some use different screw lengths. There is no universal laptop screw pattern or torque value. Use the exact service manual and follow its order and torque specification, if provided, rather than a generic diagram.
Incomplete or unsuitable interface coverage
A paste layer that does not cover the required die, a contaminated surface or a cracked layer can create a local hot spot. Conversely, excess material can spread into areas where it does not belong and may interfere with the cooler. The correct amount and application method depend on the surface and the manufacturer’s instructions; no single blob size or spread pattern is established for all laptops.
Wrong pad, putty or replacement thickness
Thermal pads and putty do more than transfer heat. They can set the height of the cooler and provide clearance for memory, voltage-regulator components or other parts. A pad that is too thick can lift the heatsink away from the CPU or GPU; one that is too thin may leave another component without contact. Cutting a generic pad to fit is not a safe substitute for the specified material and thickness.

Liquid metal or phase-change material replaced incorrectly
Some designs use a phase-change pad or liquid metal rather than conventional grease. These materials have different handling requirements and, in the case of liquid metal, electrical-conductivity and containment risks. Treating them as ordinary paste can cause poor contact, leakage or component damage.
Fan wiring or fan hardware disturbed
A connector can look seated while one contact is not fully engaged. A pinched cable, foreign object or damaged bearing can also reduce airflow. If a diagnostic reports a fan fault, or the fan does not behave as the model’s support documentation describes, reopening the thermal module without a wiring plan may make the situation worse.
Identify the thermal interface specified for your model
Before buying material or removing the cooler, find the service manual or an official repair guide for the exact model and board revision. Confirm each location separately; a CPU, GPU, memory package and power component may not use the same interface.

| Interface | What it is used for | Main compatibility concern | Appropriate response when uncertain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional thermal paste | A viscous compound between a relatively flat chip surface and heatsink | Coverage, surface preparation and correct seating | Use only the material and application method specified for the model |
| Thermal pad | A preformed layer that bridges a measured gap | Exact thickness and footprint affect heatsink height and component contact | Do not guess thickness; obtain the model’s specification |
| Thermal putty | A conformable compound used where gap sizes vary | Substituting paste or a rigid pad can leave gaps or lift the cooler | Follow the service documentation for quantity and locations |
| Phase-change material | A solid or semi-solid interface designed to change behavior with heat | Handling and replacement procedure differ from ordinary grease | Use the manufacturer’s procedure or authorized service |
| Liquid metal | A high-performance liquid interface used on some specific designs | Spill containment, electrical conductivity and application technique | Stop and use qualified or manufacturer-authorized service if the design is not explicitly documented |
The table describes categories, not interchangeable products. The evidence available here does not establish a best aftermarket brand, universal temperature improvement or a safe substitute for a model-specified material.
Model-specific warnings that illustrate why generic advice fails
ASUS GX551QM
The ASUS GX551QM Service Guide, dated December 8, 2023, says thermal materials must be replaced when the thermal module is removed and includes instructions for liquid-metal rework. That is a model-specific repair requirement. It should not be read as a rule that every ASUS laptop, or every laptop, uses liquid metal or needs the same procedure.
MSI notebooks with the named 12th-generation Core i9 configurations
MSI’s product-information page, updated January 26, 2022, identifies particular laptops bundled with 12th-generation Intel Core i9 processors as using a phase-change liquid-metal pad. MSI warns that repasting carries high risk even for professionals and states: “MSI strongly recommends users who need a re-paste/replace for the thermal grease or encounter any abnormal high CPU temperature contact the MSI service center for help.” The warning applies to the models covered by that notice, not automatically to every MSI notebook.

A safe decision sequence
- Establish that the change is real. Repeat one representative workload with the same power mode, ambient conditions and fan profile used for the earlier measurement. Record temperatures and behavior rather than relying on memory.
- Eliminate external airflow causes. Put the laptop on a hard surface, clear the vents and check that no case, stand or cable blocks an opening.
- Use the maker’s diagnostics. Run the supported fan or hardware test and compare the observed fan behavior with the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Decide whether the timing points to the repair. A change that appeared immediately after the thermal module was removed makes seating, fasteners, interface material and fan wiring higher-priority suspects than a software theory.
- Locate the exact service documentation. Confirm the thermal material at every contact, screw order, screw length, torque information and cable-routing instructions for the exact model.
- Escalate high-risk designs. If the manual specifies liquid metal or phase-change material, or if you cannot verify the correct material and procedure, stop and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
- Arrange repair for persistent faults. If airflow and diagnostics are normal but temperatures remain abnormal, provide the technician with your before-and-after records and explain exactly what was removed and replaced.
When reopening the chassis is reasonable
Reopening is only a sensible DIY step when the model’s documentation is available, the specified materials are identifiable and you are comfortable protecting delicate connectors and cables. It is not justified merely because an online video shows a generic paste application. A laptop that uses liquid metal or a phase-change pad, or one that has already suffered a spill, fan fault or thermal shutdown, is a poor candidate for experimentation.
If a paid repair preceded the overheating, contact that provider first. Give them the model, the workload used for comparison, the old and new readings, the fan behavior and any shutdown or throttling symptoms. Avoid having multiple people reopen the machine before the original provider has had a chance to inspect it, because each additional disassembly can obscure responsibility and introduce another fault.
How to interpret temperatures without a universal threshold
No universal “normal” laptop temperature, paste quantity, pad thickness or screw torque is established for this situation. Sensor location, firmware limits, chip generation, ambient temperature, fan curve, power limit and workload all matter. A short burst at a high temperature can be expected on one model and abnormal on another; a lower reported temperature is not automatically safer if the CPU is being heavily throttled.

Use trends and behavior together:
- Compare the same workload before and after the repair.
- Look for a new difference between CPU and GPU behavior that suggests one contact surface is worse than the other.
- Check whether clocks or performance fall as temperature rises.
- Note whether fans respond as expected or remain stopped at a temperature where the model normally increases speed.
- Record shutdowns, freezes and firmware warnings, which are more significant than a small change in a single reading.
DIY, service-center or stop-now? A practical choice
| Situation | Best next step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Only a small change, no throttling, vents obstructed or fan profile changed | Correct the surface, restore the documented profile and run a like-for-like check | External airflow or settings may explain the result without another disassembly |
| Immediate large increase after opening, with no obvious airflow issue | Use the exact service manual to inspect seating, fasteners, interfaces and connectors, or return to the repair provider | The timing makes reassembly a leading suspect |
| Unknown pad or putty thickness, missing material or uncertain screw order | Do not guess; obtain documentation or professional service | A wrong height can prevent contact even when paste looks correct |
| Liquid metal or phase-change interface | Manufacturer or authorized service unless the exact procedure and materials are explicitly documented and within your skill level | Handling and failure consequences are materially different from ordinary paste |
| Fan diagnostic failure, fan not spinning, burning odor, visible spill, repeated shutdown or swollen battery | Power down and seek qualified service | Continuing to test can worsen hardware or safety risks |
Common fixes that do not solve the underlying problem
- Adding more paste without checking contact: extra compound cannot compensate for a lifted heatsink or a missing pad.
- Copying a desktop-PC paste tutorial: laptop dies, pads and module pressure arrangements differ, so desktop quantities and patterns are not universal.
- Replacing every interface with one material: a pad, putty, phase-change layer and liquid metal serve different mechanical and thermal roles.
- Using a cooling stand as a repair: additional clearance may improve intake airflow but cannot correct a cable fault or poor contact.
- Repeating severe stress tests: if the system throttles heavily or shuts down, repeated testing adds heat without improving the diagnosis.
- Relying on a temperature number without context: readings need workload, ambient conditions, fan mode and sensor identity to be meaningful.
What to give a technician
A concise handoff speeds diagnosis. Include the exact model and serial or service identifier if requested, the date of the repaste, who performed it, the material used and where it was applied, the before-and-after workload, temperatures, fan mode, diagnostic results and any throttling or shutdown. Mention whether the chassis was opened again, whether a connector was unplugged and whether any liquid metal or pad was involved.
Source-specific guidance
ASUS’s “Motherboard: Troubleshooting Overheating and Fan Issues” identifies cooler installation, loose clips, cracked or uneven paste and blocked airflow as possible causes. ASUS’s “Windows 11/10: Troubleshooting – Overheating and Fan issues,” updated September 8, 2026, explains that dust or debris can restrict airflow and that fan speed responds to CPU and GPU temperature. MSI’s “Notebook: How to Troubleshoot Overheating Issues?”, dated May 13, 2024, recommends checking ventilation, fan modes and diagnostics and contacting support when the problem persists. The ASUS GX551QM Service Guide is dated December 8, 2023, and MSI’s phase-change liquid-metal-pad information was updated January 26, 2022. These documents support model-specific troubleshooting; none establishes a universal temperature limit or a universal repasting method.
Bottom line
Overheating that begins right after repasting is most often a contact, material, fastener or fan-reassembly question before it is a search for a different paste. Verify airflow and diagnostics without opening the case, compare equivalent workloads, then follow the exact service manual for the model. If the design uses liquid metal or phase-change material, the correct replacement is uncertain, or dangerous symptoms appear, stop testing and use manufacturer-authorized or otherwise qualified service.
