Yes, usually. Building a conventional desktop from separate parts is generally more practical than assembling a laptop from components. Desktop cases provide more room and easier access, while most laptops are sold as complete systems and may have parts that are soldered down or difficult to reach. The answer depends on the exact laptop: some models allow memory or storage upgrades, and modular designs are notable exceptions.
What “building a laptop” usually means
A conventional desktop build starts with separate components selected to work together and fitted into a case. Most laptop buyers instead choose from complete systems or a limited set of configurations at purchase. Replacing a documented, serviceable laptop component is a repair or upgrade—not the same project as assembling a desktop from standard parts.
There are exceptions: some laptops are designed around replaceable modules. Those designs remain specific to their manufacturers and products; they do not make arbitrary desktop parts interchangeable with laptop components.
Why desktop assembly is usually more straightforward
More accessible components
A desktop tower generally gives the builder direct access to its internal parts. Its modular layout makes components easier to install, replace, and inspect than in a compact laptop. That access can also make later upgrades more practical.

More room to choose and expand
Desktop builders can select from a broader range of cases, components, cooling options, and expansion possibilities. This flexibility comes with responsibility: the parts still need to be compatible, and the builder must make choices about cooling and intended expansion. A desktop build is not effortless simply because its components are easier to reach.
What makes laptop assembly and upgrades harder
Compact construction
Laptops combine the computer with a display, keyboard, trackpad, and battery in a small enclosure. That compact layout can make internal parts harder to access. Intel notes that laptop CPUs and GPUs are often soldered to the motherboard or prohibitively difficult to access, making upgrades to them impractical for most users.

Serviceability varies by model
Do not assume every laptop has soldered memory or inaccessible storage. Some models allow RAM or storage upgrades; others do not. Dell, for example, identifies customer self-replaceable parts for its products and publishes separate replacement guidance for notebooks and desktop systems. Check the service documentation for your exact model before opening it or buying a replacement part.

Choose a desktop build if component control matters most
A desktop is the more practical route if you want to select individual parts, have room for expansion, or expect to replace components over time. You will need to check compatibility and make decisions about cooling and the case.

Choose a laptop if portability and an integrated system matter most
A laptop is usually the simpler purchase when you need a computer you can carry and use with its own screen, keyboard, and battery. You can compare available configurations before buying, but future upgrades will depend on what the manufacturer makes serviceable.
Repairable and DIY exceptions
Framework describes its laptops as upgradeable and repairable, making them a named example of a more modular approach. That is an exception to the typical integrated laptop, not evidence that every laptop can be assembled or upgraded in the same way.

There are also desktop systems with guided assembly processes. Framework’s official setup page gives a 10–20 minute estimate for its DIY Desktop specifically. That product estimate is not a general desktop-build time or a comparison with laptop assembly.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—say about difficulty
The cited guidance supports a practical comparison: desktops are generally more accessible and modular, while laptops are usually bought as integrated systems and vary in serviceability. It does not provide a measured study or universal time estimate comparing how long a beginner takes to build each type. Individual experience depends on the system and the work involved.
