First check whether the laptop is truly frozen, showing a blank screen, or only has an app that stopped responding. The right fix depends on that distinction and whether the laptop runs Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS. Try the least disruptive steps first; forced shutdowns can lose unsaved work, and Chromebook recovery erases local files.
Identify what has stopped responding
Look at the display and test the laptop before choosing a fix. A frozen sign-in screen, a blank display, a stuck app, and a laptop that has run out of power can look similar but call for different steps.
- Blank or black display: Check whether the laptop appears to be on and charging. A blank screen can involve display output or a graphics driver; it does not by itself identify the cause.
- Image visible but unchanged: Try a safe keyboard shortcut, such as Caps Lock, and see whether a status light changes. If no controls respond, the whole system may be unresponsive.
- Only one app is stuck: If the rest of the system still responds, close that app rather than forcing the laptop to shut down.
- Keyboard or touchpad does not respond: Check power and disconnect any attached peripherals. If the screen and other controls respond, the problem may be limited to an input device.
If the laptop is managed by a school or workplace, check with its administrator before attempting resets or recovery.
Try low-risk checks first
- Connect the laptop to power and allow it a moment to respond.
- If an external monitor is connected, check that it is powered on and connected. If the laptop’s own display is blank, disconnect external displays and peripherals, then check the laptop screen again.
- Use the instructions for the laptop’s operating system below. Avoid recovery or reset procedures until simpler steps fail and important files are backed up.
Unfreeze a Windows 10 or Windows 11 laptop
Microsoft’s guidance covers Windows 10 and 11 startup, sign-in, and post-update blank-screen problems. A blank screen with a cursor may be associated with a stalled Windows process or driver; a blank screen at sign-in may involve display-output configuration or a user profile. A blinking cursor can indicate that UEFI or BIOS cannot find a boot device. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis of a particular laptop. See Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting steps.

If the display is blank
- Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. A beep or screen flicker may indicate that it worked.
- Press Windows + P, press P again, then press Enter to cycle through display modes. If the laptop was sending its picture to another display, this may restore the built-in screen.
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete. If the security screen appears, open Task Manager. Where available, restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager.
If Windows is completely unresponsive
If none of the controls respond and the display remains blank, Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance documents holding the power button for 20 seconds to force a restart. This can discard unsaved work. More advanced forced-shutdown cycles can lead to Windows Recovery Mode, but they are not the first step for an ordinary frozen sign-in screen. Unfreeze a Mac
If one app is stuck
When macOS still responds, press Option + Command + Esc, select the unresponsive app, then choose Force Quit. Unsaved changes in that app may be lost. If the Mac remains usable, restart it from the Apple menu. Apple’s steps are in How to force an app to quit on Mac.
If the entire Mac is unresponsive
Press and hold the power button until the Mac shuts down, then press it again to start. On a Mac laptop with Touch ID, press and hold the Touch ID button as the power control. A forced shutdown may lose unsaved document changes. Apple’s startup guidance covers shutdown and follow-up options if the Mac starts to a blank screen or repeatedly fails to start. Startup recovery steps vary between Apple silicon and Intel Macs, so use the instructions for your model.

Unfreeze a Chromebook
Start with ordinary power and peripheral checks. Google recommends a hardware reset only after other ways to fix the problem have failed. For most Chromebook models:

- Turn the Chromebook off.
- Press and hold Refresh, then tap Power.
- Release Refresh when the Chromebook starts.
This resets hardware such as the keyboard and touchpad, and might delete some files in Downloads. Tablets and some Chromebook models use different sequences; follow the instructions for the specific model. See Google’s Chromebook hardware-reset instructions.
Do not confuse a hardware reset with ChromeOS recovery
ChromeOS recovery is a later step for situations such as “ChromeOS is missing or damaged,” or when previous troubleshooting has failed. It permanently erases local files, so back them up first if possible. Depending on the Chromebook, recovery may be available over the internet or may require a USB drive. Managed-device users should contact their administrator before proceeding. Follow Google’s Chromebook recovery instructions for the applicable method.

When the freeze keeps returning
A restart that temporarily clears the problem does not explain why it happened. Record details that can help identify a recurring fault:
- Laptop make and model, plus the operating-system version if known.
- What the screen shows, including any exact error text.
- Whether Caps Lock or other status lights respond and whether the laptop is charging.
- What changed recently, such as an update or newly connected peripheral.
- Which steps helped and whether the issue returned.
Disconnect a recently added peripheral and test it separately only when the laptop is responsive and the manufacturer’s instructions support doing so. Seek manufacturer support or qualified repair help if power controls do not work, the freeze recurs, hardware symptoms appear, or the model’s instructions call for service. For specialized Chromebook hang diagnostics, Chromium provides developer-focused debugging guidance; its advanced sequences are not the normal first-line fix.
