If your laptop seems to go to sleep while you are working, first check whether the whole computer is sleeping or only the display has turned off. The cause may be a sleep timer, closing the lid, pressing the power button, or—on some Windows 11 laptops—a presence-sensing feature. The correct setting depends on whether you use Windows or macOS and whether the problem happens on battery, while plugged in, or both.
First, work out what “sleeping” means
A blank screen does not necessarily mean the laptop entered sleep. Note what happens when the display goes dark and when you try to resume:
- Display off: Audio or a call may continue, and moving the mouse or pressing a key may bring the screen back.
- Sleep: The session is usually preserved and returns when you wake the computer. Microsoft describes sleep as using very little power while letting you return to where you left off (Microsoft’s explanation of sleep, shutdown and hibernation).
- Shutdown or restart: If the laptop starts fresh, closes your apps, or shows a boot screen, that is different from an ordinary sleep-and-resume cycle.
- Battery depletion or failure to wake: Record whether the device was unplugged, whether its power indicators changed, and whether it responds to its normal wake controls.
Also note the laptop’s operating system and model, and whether the event occurs on battery, on AC power, or in both situations. Those details help narrow down which settings apply.

Check Windows sleep and screen timeouts
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Check the values for both battery and plugged-in use; they can be different. Set the sleep timeout to suit your work session rather than disabling it by default. A longer awake period can use more power. Microsoft also describes power mode and Energy saver as related power-use controls in its Windows 11 power settings guide.

If the display turns off but your work continues, adjust the screen timeout rather than assuming the sleep timeout is responsible. Menu wording and available controls can vary by Windows version and device.
Check lid, power-button and presence-sensing behavior in Windows
Lid and power-button actions
A slight lid movement or an accidental power-button press can trigger an action configured for the laptop. Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options, then select Choose what closing the lid does or Choose what the power buttons do. Review the battery and plugged-in choices where shown. Microsoft notes that most laptops can be set to sleep when the lid closes in its Windows battery-saving tips.

Presence sensing, if your laptop supports it
Some Windows 11 devices have presence-sensing controls that can turn off the screen or lock the device when the system judges that you have moved away. Look under Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep for presence-sensing options. This feature is not available on every laptop; its controls depend on device support. Check sleep-related settings on a Mac laptop
On a Mac laptop, open System Settings > Battery > Options and review Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off. Apple documents this option in its guide to changing Battery settings on a Mac laptop. Also review when the display turns off or the screen locks: a dark display is not proof that the Mac itself has slept.

If the Mac sleeps or wakes unexpectedly after you have checked its settings, Apple recommends using safe mode to help determine whether software loaded at startup is involved. The safe-mode procedure differs between Apple silicon and Intel Macs, so follow Apple’s instructions for your model in If your Mac sleeps or wakes unexpectedly.

- Confirm the pattern. Write down the model, operating system, whether the laptop was on battery or plugged in, and whether it blanked the display, resumed from sleep, shut down, or restarted.
- Review the settings for that power state. Check the relevant screen and sleep timeouts, then lid and power-button actions. On supported Windows 11 hardware, inspect presence sensing; on a Mac, review Battery and display settings.
- Restart and update. Install operating-system updates and any updates recommended by the laptop manufacturer for your model.
- Use built-in diagnostics or vendor support if the problem continues. Windows provides a Power troubleshooter and battery-use information; consult current Microsoft guidance for the Windows version you use. For a Mac that sleeps or wakes unexpectedly, use Apple’s model-appropriate guidance, including its safe-mode procedure.
If the laptop is unusually hot, its battery is swelling, its charger connection is intermittent, or it shuts down instead of resuming from sleep, stop treating the event as a timeout problem. Follow the manufacturer’s safety and support guidance for that specific model. A description of unexpected sleep alone does not establish a battery, charger, sensor, overheating, or other hardware fault, so do not assume a replacement part is needed.
