If your laptop’s picture appears on the TV but the sound does not, first select the TV or HDMI device as the laptop’s audio output. Then check mute and volume on both devices. If the HDMI output is missing or remains silent, check its device status, reconnect and inspect the cable and ports, and troubleshoot the audio or graphics driver before replacing anything.
Why HDMI video can work while sound does not
HDMI can carry both video and audio over one connection, but a laptop may continue sending sound to its built-in speakers instead of the TV. The output can also be muted, disabled, or undetected. A faulty cable, port, driver, or incompatible adapter is possible, but the symptom alone does not prove that hardware has failed.
Choose the TV as the laptop’s sound output
On Windows, open Settings > System > Sound and select the TV or HDMI device under Output. Depending on the laptop, TV, and graphics hardware, its name may be the TV model, “HDMI,” or a graphics/audio device. Microsoft notes that an HDMI-connected audio device may need to be selected as the default output; Samsung also directs users to choose the HDMI device in the sound output list. Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting guide and Samsung’s HDMI audio steps provide further guidance.

Check mute and volume on both devices
Make sure neither the laptop nor the TV is muted, and raise both volume levels above zero. Also confirm the laptop has not switched back to its internal speakers. LG lists selecting the PC speakers instead of the TV as a possible cause and recommends checking volume and mute on both devices. LG’s HDMI troubleshooting instructions cover these checks.

If the TV or HDMI output is missing
If the device does not appear under Windows sound outputs, check whether it is disabled or listed as disconnected. In Windows sound-device settings, reveal disconnected playback devices if that option is available, then enable the HDMI device if it is listed. Reconnect the HDMI cable and make sure the TV is powered on. Menu labels and routes vary between Windows versions and computer hardware.
If Windows still does not detect an output, Microsoft advises checking Device Manager, showing hidden devices, and scanning for hardware changes. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for a missing or undetected audio output device.

Inspect the cable, ports, and adapter
Check that the cable is firmly connected at both ends and that the cable and HDMI ports show no visible damage. If you can, test with another cable before buying a replacement. LG recommends checking the connection and replacing a cable that is damaged or faulty. LG’s support article describes those checks.
If the laptop connects through a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or hub, check the adapter maker’s compatibility information and confirm that the specific adapter supports audio output. Adapter support can vary; a picture alone does not establish that every adapter feature works. Do not assume the cable or adapter is the cause until you have tested the output selection and device detection.

Check audio drivers and restart
An audio driver that is missing, outdated, disabled, or malfunctioning can keep an output from appearing or working. Check for the appropriate audio or graphics-device driver using the laptop or sound-card manufacturer’s support information; graphics-card makers may also provide HDMI audio drivers. Windows’ audio troubleshooter is another step to try. After changing a driver, or if the output remains undetected, restart the laptop and reconnect the TV. See Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting guide and missing-device guidance.

The Windows menu paths and troubleshooting steps above are intended for Windows 10 and Windows 11, though labels can differ by version, manufacturer, and hardware. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; after that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.
