A laptop fan that runs constantly is often responding to heat from sustained processor or graphics activity, or to restricted airflow. Check what is using the computer and whether its vents are clear before assuming the fan has failed. If the laptop overheats, slows down, makes abnormal noise, or reports a fan error, use the manufacturer’s diagnostics and contact support or a qualified repair service.
Why a laptop fan may keep running
Sustained processor or graphics activity
Demanding games, video compression, updates, indexing, and other active applications can keep a laptop warm enough to run its fan. Apple names graphics-heavy games, video compression, and Spotlight indexing after migration as examples; Dell notes that Windows updates and open applications can contribute to ongoing activity. If the fan settles after a demanding task finishes and the laptop otherwise behaves normally, the cooling response may be expected.
Blocked vents or accumulated dust
A soft surface, covered vent, or dust buildup can restrict airflow and make the cooling system work harder. Set the laptop on a hard, level surface and keep its intake and exhaust areas unobstructed. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning external vents.
Power settings, software, or a hardware problem
Some laptop models offer quieter thermal or power profiles, but available controls vary. Software can also keep processor activity elevated. A fan fault is more plausible if abnormal behavior continues after workload and airflow checks, the fan makes grinding or rattling sounds, or manufacturer diagnostics report an error; constant operation alone does not establish a failed fan.

How to troubleshoot a fan that runs constantly
- Improve ventilation: Place the laptop on a hard, flat surface and make sure no object or fabric covers its vents.
- Let a hot laptop cool: If it is unusually hot, stop demanding work and allow it to cool. Before cleaning vents, check the maker’s instructions; HP advises turning the computer off first.
- Check current activity: Open Task Manager on Windows or the relevant activity monitor on your operating system. Look for applications or processes using substantial CPU or graphics resources. Identify a process before closing it, and do not casually terminate unfamiliar system processes.
- Match fan behavior to the workload: Consider whether a game, update, indexing task, or other intensive work began around the time the fan became loud. Check again after that work ends.
- Use model-specific controls and diagnostics: Consult the laptop maker’s support instructions for your exact model. Use any available thermal or power profile and run the manufacturer’s diagnostics if the problem continues. Quiet modes and diagnostic options are not available on every laptop.
- Get service when warning signs persist: Contact manufacturer support or a qualified repair provider if the laptop overheats, performance drops, the fan makes abnormal noise, the behavior persists despite basic checks, or diagnostics report an error. Do not disable the fan or open the laptop unless you have model-specific service instructions.
How to tell expected fan activity from a warning sign

What manufacturer guidance says about fan noise
HP states that, for the notebook PCs covered by its guidance, a constant CPU load as low as 3% to 4% can make fans spin faster; this is not a universal threshold for all laptops. HP also says it is normal for fans to spin loudly for five to twenty seconds when the computer initially turns on. These examples are specific to HP’s guidance, so check instructions for your own model.

Would a cooling pad help?
A cooling pad may suit some laptop and desk setups, but it is not a universal fix and cannot repair a failed fan. First check the workload and ensure the laptop’s own vents have clear airflow. Choose an accessory only if its design is compatible with your model and setup.
