A laptop fan that is not spinning may be working as designed: some models keep the fan off until the CPU or GPU reaches a specified temperature. Check your exact model’s guidance first. If the fan should be running but remains still, clear external airflow obstructions, use the manufacturer’s diagnostic tools, and arrange service if a test reports a fault or the fan still does not operate when required.
First, check whether the fan is supposed to be running
Do not judge the fan only by whether it spins while the laptop is cool or lightly loaded. ASUS says fan behavior depends on CPU and GPU temperature, and some models keep the fan off until it reaches an activation threshold. MSI likewise notes that some discrete-GPU fans start only after reaching a default temperature threshold. These behaviors are model-dependent, not rules for every laptop. Check your exact model’s manual or manufacturer utility for its fan behavior and test conditions. ASUS’s fan and overheating guidance and MSI’s explanation of a fan that is not spinning describe applicable systems.
Restore airflow with low-risk external checks
- Place the laptop on a firm, level surface rather than bedding, a cushion, or another soft material that could cover vents.
- Check that ventilation openings are not blocked and look for visible dust or debris.
- If the vents are dusty, follow the cleaning instructions for the exact laptop. For covered ASUS devices, ASUS says to shut down and unplug the laptop before cleaning; it recommends a commercially available compressed-air can held at a distance, and warns not to invert the can. ASUS also cautions against high-pressure devices such as air compressors, which can damage fan blades. These are ASUS instructions for applicable devices, not universal cleaning directions. HP also advises keeping vents clear because restricted airflow can increase fan workload. See HP’s guidance on noisy fans and airflow. Do not insert objects into a vent or open the laptop just to clean it unless the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions call for that work.
Check workload and manufacturer-recommended settings
If fan or heat symptoms persist, check whether a resource-heavy application is driving CPU or GPU activity. Lenovo’s troubleshooting guidance includes CPU usage, applications, vent cleaning, and BIOS or power-manager issues when addressing unexpectedly high fan speed; HP also discusses power settings, vent cleaning, and BIOS updates for persistent fan noise. These checks address symptoms and do not establish that a fan has failed—or that a BIOS update will fix a fan that will not spin. Run diagnostics supported by your laptop
Use the manufacturer’s diagnostic tool if your model provides one, and follow its stated test and interpretation. ASUS describes System Diagnosis in MyASUS and recommends service if it identifies a problem; the feature is not available on every device. MSI describes hardware diagnosis through MSI Center for applicable notebooks. The app, menu, test, and result meanings vary by system, so do not treat another model’s instructions as a match. When to stop troubleshooting and arrange service
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if a supported diagnostic flags a fault, or if the fan stays inactive under conditions where the manufacturer says it should be cooling. A stationary fan at idle alone is not enough to establish failure; a failed diagnostic or continued non-operation when the model requires cooling is a stronger reason for service.

Fan replacements are model- and configuration-specific. Do not buy a generic replacement or follow a disassembly guide for a different laptop. Ask the provider to confirm the compatible part and whether the repair includes verification that the fan works. HP service documentation for applicable systems calls for rebooting after fan replacement and checking fan function with HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI; that procedure is specific to HP’s documented service context, not a universal laptop repair step.
