Apple, Dell, HP, and ASUS are sensible laptop brands to compare with Lenovo—but the available 2026 survey evidence does not establish that they are more reliable or rank them as the top four. Reliability varies by model and configuration, so choose by the specific laptop, its fit for your work, and the support and repair options available where you live.

What the reliability evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Consumer Reports’ 2026 reliability coverage draws on reports from members who bought portable computers new between 2019 and 2025. Its data set includes 75,923 computers, and 16% of surveyed laptops broke or stopped working as they should within three years. Nearly 6 in 10 laptops that broke were taken in for repair. These are survey findings, not results from a controlled durability test, and they do not predict what will happen to a particular laptop.

Consumer Reports combines member reports with model ratings and estimates how often problems are likely by the end of the third year of ownership. It says laptops are comparatively reliable among the products it covers; senior home and tech writer Nicholas De Leon wrote, “Laptops are pretty reliable compared with many of the products on which Consumer Reports collects data.” That broad observation is not a guarantee for every brand or model. Consumer Reports’ 2026 laptop reliability article explains the survey and method.

Which? reports that its February/March 2026 online survey included 15,755 people who own technology products, among them 6,971 laptop owners. Its detailed brand analysis and reliability values are for members, so the public information does not support a precise comparison of Apple, Dell, HP, or ASUS against Lenovo. Consumer Reports’ public material likewise does not provide a complete, readable 2026 brand ranking. The four brands below are a shortlist to investigate, not a proven reliability league table.

Other Consumer Reports figures help put ownership decisions in context: 22% of surveyed laptops bought between 2019 and 2025 had an extended warranty or service contract, while 56% of surveyed members said reliability mattered more to them than performance or affordability. The figures describe the surveyed population, not what every buyer should choose. Which?’s 2026 laptop-brand survey page identifies the survey scope and the limits of its public results.

Four Lenovo alternatives to put on your shortlist

These brands offer different operating systems, product lines, and use cases. None should be treated as uniformly reliable across its entire range. Compare specific models you can buy locally, rather than assuming that a brand-level reputation applies to every laptop it sells.

Apple: consider it if macOS and a portable general-use laptop suit you

Apple’s MacBook Air is a general-purpose portable option in Consumer Reports’ buying guide, while the MacBook Pro is aimed at more demanding work. The current ratings page includes a 2026 MacBook Air, making it a concrete model to compare. Its listing is not evidence that Apple as a brand outperforms Lenovo on reliability. Check the exact configuration, workload fit, warranty, and service options. Consumer Reports’ buying guide describes the Air and Pro product-line distinction, and its laptop ratings page lists current rated models.

Dell: compare the exact line and configuration

Dell appears among the manufacturers covered in Consumer Reports’ ratings ecosystem, but the public evidence here does not establish a 2026 reliability rank against Lenovo. Compare the particular Dell model’s processor, memory, storage, display, battery results, warranty, and local support with a Lenovo configured for the same work and price range.

HP: assess the model rather than the badge

HP is also included in the Consumer Reports ratings ecosystem, but that does not establish that all HP laptops share the same reliability or that HP beats Lenovo. Check model-specific testing and owner evidence where available, then consider support access, warranty terms, and repair options for the configuration you can actually purchase.

ASUS: match the product line to your workload

ASUS belongs on a comparison shortlist, not at a proven position above Lenovo. Its public brand-level reliability standing relative to Lenovo is not established by the survey information available here. Compare a specific ASUS laptop against a like-for-like Lenovo, paying attention to performance, portability, battery results, warranty coverage, and parts access.

How to choose between Lenovo and another brand

Start with the operating system and the work you do

Decide whether you need macOS or Windows and whether the laptop is for everyday browsing and office work or for demanding creative, development, or gaming tasks. A model designed for light portability is not a fair performance comparison with a higher-powered workstation or gaming laptop. Consumer Reports’ buying guide illustrates the distinction within a brand: the MacBook Air is positioned as a general-use portable option, while the Pro is intended for more demanding work.

Compare equivalent configurations

Set the same requirements for processor, memory, storage, screen size and type, and warranty before comparing prices. An entry-level laptop and a premium model can differ substantially in performance and repair options even when they carry the same brand name. Use measured battery results where possible, and consider whether weight, screen size, and battery life suit the way you work.

Check service, warranty, and repairability

Review what the warranty covers, how technical support works in your region, and whether authorized service or replacement parts are accessible. A long warranty or a familiar brand name does not by itself show how easy or costly a repair will be. Repairability is model-specific: look for battery access, replaceable components, repair instructions, and parts availability.

iFixit’s repairability assessments are based on teardowns and documented criteria, and the organization notes that its rubric can change over time. Which? points out that battery replacement is difficult on many laptops. As a contrasting repairability example—not a claim about brand reliability—Which? describes Framework laptops as having easily replaceable batteries, while iFixit describes the Framework Laptop 12 as modular, with standard-part upgrades and repairs, instructions, and replacement parts. iFixit’s laptop repairability scores provide its published assessments and design observations.

A practical comparison checklist

  • Model: Identify the exact product line, model year, and configuration available to you.
  • Workload: Match performance needs to everyday use, creative work, development, or gaming.
  • Operating system: Confirm that macOS or Windows supports the software and workflow you rely on.
  • Portability: Compare weight, screen size, and battery results for your typical work pattern.
  • Reliability evidence: Prefer current model-level testing and clearly described owner surveys; note the survey period and method.
  • Ownership support: Check warranty scope, technical support, local service, parts availability, and repair documentation.
  • Price: Compare machines with equivalent memory, storage, processor, display, and warranty.
