Four practical lanyard add-ons solve different problems: a retractable badge reel makes repeated scans easier, a phone tether keeps a compatible phone attached, a key ring gathers frequently used keys, and a breakaway or detachable connector can separate if the lanyard is snagged. Check each attachment against your lanyard, the item it will carry, and the rules for where you wear it.
What accessories can you add to a lanyard?
The useful options depend on what you carry and how you use it. A badge reel is for repeated access; phone loops and straps are for compatible phone-and-case combinations; key rings add a place to attach keys; and breakaway or detachable connectors change how the lanyard separates. These accessories are not automatically interchangeable, so check the connector and the product’s stated carrying guidance before attaching anything.
Which lanyard accessories are useful for keys, phones, and ID badges?
1. Retractable badge reel for frequent scans
A retractable badge reel lets you extend an ID or access card to a reader or person without removing the lanyard. It can be useful when you need to present a badge repeatedly during the day. Check that the reel attaches securely to your lanyard and that its reach is sufficient for the reader’s position.

2. Phone loop or tether for a compatible case
A phone loop or strap can connect a phone to a lanyard, but compatibility depends on the attachment and the particular phone case. Before using one, confirm how it connects to your case and follow the product’s load guidance. Supplier listings include cell-phone loops and phone straps, but they do not establish that one attachment works with every case.
Just Lanyards’ attachment options include cell-phone loops, while TQ Lanyards lists phone straps among its options. Treat these as examples of available attachment types, not universal compatibility claims.

3. Key ring attachment for frequently used keys
A key ring makes it possible to carry frequently used keys with a badge. Djois describes a cord lanyard with a swivel hook and key ring, and notes that a reel can also be attached to the ring. Check what your existing lanyard is designed to carry before adding keys or other items; a ring’s presence does not establish a safe load limit.

Just Lanyards describes safety breakaways as an option for potentially hazardous environments. TQ Lanyards lists breakaway and detachable buckles among its options. Check the specific connector design and follow the requirements of the place where you wear the lanyard.

How to choose the right lanyard add-on
- Decide what it needs to carry. Identify whether the attachment is for an ID, phone, keys, or another item. Do not assume a lanyard designed for a badge can carry additional weight.
- Match the attachment to how often you need access. A reel helps when a badge must be extended repeatedly; a ring or phone tether is useful only if it fits the item and carrying setup.
- Check how it connects. Confirm that the attachment fits the existing lanyard’s ring, hook, loop, or buckle and that the connection suits the item being carried.
- Use only product-specific reach and load information. If a listing gives a reach or capacity, apply it only to that product and its stated conditions. Check the listing rather than transferring specifications between models.
- Consider whether the lanyard should separate. Choose a breakaway or detachable design only after considering the wearing environment and any applicable local rules.
