A Landsat 9 image acquired on March 18, 2026, shows a patchwork of small, multicolored farm plots across Yunlin County in southwestern Taiwan. NASA Earth Observatory published the scene as its Image of the Day on April 24, 2026. The farms lie on the floodplains of the Zhoushui and Beigang rivers (the county government uses the spelling Zhuoshui for Zhoushui), not beside a single river identified as Taiwan’s largest.
What the satellite image shows
The scene was collected by Landsat 9’s Operational Land Imager (OLI). From orbit, Yunlin’s agricultural plain appears as a dense mosaic of small fields in contrasting colors and textures. Those colors indicate differences in vegetation, soil, moisture, management or season, but the available source does not identify each individual parcel. It would therefore be inaccurate to label every red, green or brown patch as a particular crop based on color alone.
NASA does identify a broad contrast: the darker green area in the lower-right portion of the first image is dominated by rice, while the surrounding landscape contains a varied mix of small-farm plots. The image is credited to NASA Earth Observatory/Michala Garrison and uses Landsat data from the U.S. Geological Survey. NASA’s story is by Adam Voiland.

Where Yunlin County is located
Yunlin County occupies part of southwestern Taiwan. The pictured farmland follows the floodplains of the Zhoushui and Beigang rivers. NASA describes the area as mostly flat, with fertile soils and easy access to irrigation water. The Yunlin County Department of Agriculture likewise describes the county’s alluvial plains, level terrain and irrigation advantages.
These physical conditions help explain why the region is one of Taiwan’s productive agricultural areas. Floodplain soils can support intensive cultivation, while canals and river-fed water supplies make it practical to grow crops through multiple planting cycles and changing seasons.

Which crops are grown there?
The county government lists rice, sweet potatoes, peanuts, corn, sugarcane, garlic, scallions, fruits and vegetables among Yunlin’s representative agricultural products. NASA’s image supports the impression of crop diversity but does not map those products parcel by parcel. A field’s apparent color can change with planting date, crop maturity, water level, harvest residue or illumination, so crop identification requires additional imagery, field records or local surveys.

Why Taiwan’s farms appear so small
NASA reports that the average Taiwan farm is less than 1 hectare. Its explanation combines historical policy and inheritance patterns: earlier policies limited farm size, while property was divided into smaller parcels across generations. The result is a landscape in which many neighboring holdings sit close together, producing the fine-grained pattern visible from space.

How to interpret the “mosaic” pattern
Parcel scale
The dominant visual message is scale. Instead of a few enormous fields, the floodplain is divided into many compact plots, often with narrow boundaries and irregular color transitions. The image makes those divisions legible over a broad area that would be difficult to understand from ground level alone.

Landscape setting
The mosaic is not an isolated patch of farmland. It sits within the connected lowland system shaped by the Zhoushui and Beigang rivers, where flat topography, alluvial soils and irrigation infrastructure support intensive agriculture.
Crop diversity
Yunlin’s crop list explains why adjacent fields can look different at the same time, but the satellite view should be read as evidence of a varied agricultural landscape rather than a key for naming every colored rectangle.

What Landsat contributes
Landsat 9 provides consistent, multispectral observations that reveal patterns in vegetation and land cover across large regions. In this case, the OLI image turns an agricultural county’s parcel structure into a single, comprehensible view. It does not replace local agricultural statistics or on-site identification; instead, it supplies geographic context and a way to see how fragmented cultivation is arranged across the floodplain.
