Short answer: A used 2020-present Land Rover Defender deserves a careful, vehicle-specific inspection rather than a blanket reliability verdict. Check its service and repair history, test every electrical feature, inspect the body and underside for off-road damage, investigate any warning lights, and verify open recalls by VIN.
Owner-survey evidence is favorable within the seven-seat class but does not predict whether a particular Defender will be trouble-free. The condition of the exact engine, model year, mileage, maintenance record and VIN matters more than a headline score.
What the available reliability evidence actually says
The current Defender generation covered by the published review runs from 2020 onward, with the evidence focused on the Defender 110. What Car?’s used Defender review, updated 9 December 2025, reports results from a UK owner survey. Those figures describe owners’ experiences; they are not a mechanical failure probability, warranty prediction or guarantee for an individual vehicle.

|---|---|---|
| Defender position among seven-seaters | Second of 12 models | A class ranking from the survey, not a universal reliability test |
| Defender reliability score | 96.3% | A survey score for the model covered, not the chance that any one car will avoid a fault |
| Owners reporting a fault | 14% | Reported ownership experience in that survey population |
| Affected cars that remained drivable | 87% | Most cars with a reported fault could still be driven, according to respondents |
| Land Rover brand position | 27th of 30 manufacturers; 87.1% | A brand-level survey statistic, not a Defender-only measurement |
The survey does not establish an engine-by-engine, trim-by-trim or model-year reliability ranking. It also cannot account for differences in climate, road salt, servicing standards, previous owners or off-road use. Treat the numbers as a reason to inspect intelligently, not as permission to skip an inspection.

Common problems reported by owners
The issues below come from owner reports summarized in the review. A reported area is a prompt for diagnosis, not proof that every Defender has the defect.
Electronic warning lights and intermittent faults
Unexpected warning lamps are a recurring concern in the survey, particularly in the electronic systems. A lamp may be caused by a sensor, wiring, software, a low-voltage event or a fault in another module that communicates with it. The symbol alone does not identify the failed part.
During a viewing, switch the ignition on before starting and note which lamps appear for the self-test and which remain illuminated after the engine runs. Operate the infotainment system, cameras, parking sensors, driver-assistance functions, climate controls, windows, mirrors, locks, lights and powered seats where fitted. Look for screens that reboot, functions that respond slowly or features that work only intermittently. Ask the seller whether a warning has led to diagnostic records, repeat dealer visits or a software update.

AdBlue warnings on diesel versions
What Car? specifically mentions AdBlue-related warnings on diesel examples. The message can indicate a level, quality, dosing or emissions-system issue, and a warning does not tell you which component needs attention. Ask for invoices showing how the warning was diagnosed and repaired, whether it returned, and whether the vehicle ever displayed a countdown that could prevent a restart.
Check the dashboard and the vehicle’s service documentation rather than assuming that topping up the fluid solved the problem. A diesel with an unexplained or recurring AdBlue warning should be inspected with manufacturer-capable equipment before money changes hands.
Bodywork and underbody damage
Bodywork and visible underbody components are also named in the survey’s fault areas. Defenders may have been used on trails, construction sites or rough access roads, so inspect all four corners, the sills, bumpers, suspension and exposed panels. Look underneath for fresh scrapes, bent brackets, cracked covers, leaking dampers, damaged wiring, dented fuel or exhaust components and uneven underseal repairs.

Compare panel gaps and paint texture from one side to the other. Mismatched finishes, overspray or fasteners with tool marks can indicate accident or repair work. Off-road marks are not automatically disqualifying, but they should match the seller’s explanation and the service record.

Interior trim and steering complaints
Interior trim and steering appear among the other areas owners reported. On a test drive, listen for rattles over uneven pavement, check that trim stays secure and make sure the steering is centered, consistent and free of vibration. Pay attention to pulling, knocking, unusual effort or a warning message. A specialist should determine whether a symptom is normal tire behavior, an alignment issue, a worn component or an electronic steering fault.
Complex and expensive repairs
Some respondents described repairs as complex and expensive. That does not establish a typical repair bill, but it does make documentation and diagnosis especially important. A car with a long list of completed repairs may be a better proposition than an apparently untouched example with unresolved warnings and no invoices.

Step-by-step checks before buying a used Defender
- Read the history before the appointment. Request the VIN, service invoices, inspection reports, recall paperwork and details of any warning-light visits. Check whether mileage, dates and work descriptions form a consistent timeline. Missing records do not prove neglect, but they increase the value of an independent inspection.
- Inspect the exterior in daylight. Walk around all corners, examine panel gaps and look for paint differences, impact marks and poorly aligned trim. Check glass, lamps, mirrors, seals and the roof. Photograph anything the seller cannot explain and compare it with the history.
- Inspect underneath. Use a ramp or inspection bay when possible. Look for off-road impacts, crushed shields, bent suspension or steering parts, fluid leaks, damaged exhaust hardware and non-factory repairs. Do not crawl under a vehicle supported only by an emergency jack.
- Run the complete electrical self-test. Turn the ignition on, start the engine and wait for the normal lamp sequence. Then test every switch, screen, camera, sensor, light, window, lock, mirror, climate function and seat adjustment fitted to that vehicle. Record intermittent behavior instead of accepting “it just needs a reset.”
- Investigate diesel emissions warnings. If the vehicle is diesel, ask specifically about AdBlue messages, emissions-system work and any no-start countdown. Match the explanation to invoices and diagnostic findings.
- Test-drive on varied roads. Start from cold if possible. Listen for noises, feel for vibration or steering pull, test braking and acceleration, and observe whether warning lamps return. Compare what you feel with the service and repair history rather than judging a symptom in isolation.
- Arrange a Defender-familiar pre-purchase inspection. An independent technician can inspect mechanical, body and electronic systems and identify evidence of previous impact or water exposure. Confirm in advance that the shop has equipment capable of communicating with the Defender’s manufacturer-specific modules.
- Verify the VIN-specific recall status. Use the process in the next section and obtain written confirmation that eligible repairs are complete before finalizing the purchase.
Recalls: why the VIN matters
The used-review coverage lists historical recall examples involving an oil-filter housing on certain six-cylinder petrol and diesel versions, security-software updates, a water-pump pulley drive belt, exhaust downpipe fixings and a seat-belt pretensioner. These examples are not an exhaustive or current campaign list, and eligibility depends on production details.
Two additional United States filings dated 2026 illustrate why a model-year search is insufficient:
| Recall filing | Vehicles or system described | Potential consequence | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| NHTSA 26V389 | Certain 2020–2026 Defenders; driver-airbag clockspring connector | Fretting corrosion may increase circuit resistance and prevent intended airbag deployment | Check the VIN and confirm the remedy with a Land Rover retailer |
| NHTSA 26V248 | Certain 2020–2024 mild-hybrid Defenders; DC-DC converter campaign | Applies only to eligible vehicles identified by the campaign | Use the VIN to establish whether the vehicle is included and whether repair is complete |
Neither filing applies to every Defender in the named model-year range. A car of the same year may have a different production configuration or already have received the remedy.

How to check and document recall status
- Copy the VIN directly from the vehicle and registration documents; check that every character matches.
- Enter it into the NHTSA recall lookup for vehicles covered by that US system.
- Ask a Land Rover retailer to run the VIN through its manufacturer records, including completed campaigns that may not appear as an unrepaired NHTSA recall.
- Request confirmation of the repair date and remedy status in writing. Do not rely on a seller’s statement that “the model had no recalls.”
NHTSA states that recall repairs are free. Recall status is vehicle-specific and can change when campaigns are issued or records are updated; the agency’s recall and investigation resources explain the broader process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare two used Defenders
When two candidates look similar, compare the evidence in the same order rather than choosing by trim name or color.
- Exact model year and engine: Record the powertrain, fuel type, mild-hybrid status and build details. Published material does not support a defensible engine-by-engine reliability winner.
- Mileage and documentation: Prefer a coherent service history with dated invoices and evidence that manufacturer schedules were followed over a lower-mileage car with unexplained gaps.
- Warning-light history: Compare whether warnings were isolated, diagnosed and repaired or repeatedly returned. Ask for scan reports and dealer visit records.
- Body and underside condition: Examine both vehicles for off-road impacts, accident repairs, corrosion, leaks and non-standard modifications.
- Diagnostic inspection: Use the same Defender-capable technician and the same inspection scope on both cars so the results are comparable.
- VIN-specific recalls: Check each VIN separately, including whether remedies were completed. A clear result for one vehicle says nothing about the other.
Using a code reader without overtrusting it
A generic OBD-II reader can be useful for a preliminary scan, especially when an unexpected warning light is part of the reason for the inspection. It may reveal basic emissions codes or show that codes were recently cleared. Compatibility varies, however, and a generic reader may not access manufacturer-specific modules such as advanced driver assistance, airbag, body or chassis systems.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Before paying for a scan, ask the operator which Defender systems and model years the tool supports. Treat a “no codes” result as limited evidence, not a clean bill of health. A professional pre-purchase inspection with appropriate equipment remains the more reliable way to assess a complex vehicle.
When to proceed, negotiate or walk away
Proceed after verification
- The VIN is identified and recall remedies are documented or scheduled through an appropriate retailer.
- Service and repair records are consistent with the mileage and the seller’s explanation.
- Electrical features operate normally during repeated checks, and any previous warnings have a documented diagnosis.
- The body, underside and steering show no unexplained impact or repair evidence.
- An independent Defender-familiar inspection finds no unresolved safety or major mechanical concern.
Pause the purchase
- The seller will not provide the VIN or refuses an independent inspection.
- Warning lamps remain on, return during the drive or have been “reset” without a diagnosis.
- A diesel has an unexplained AdBlue warning or no-start countdown history.
- Underbody damage, structural repairs, fluid leaks or steering symptoms cannot be reconciled with the records.
- An open safety recall has no confirmed remedy and the seller cannot arrange verification.
These conditions do not automatically prove that a Defender is beyond repair. They do mean you should stop treating the asking price as the only decision variable and obtain a written technical assessment before committing.
Questions to ask the seller
- Which warning lights or electronic faults have appeared, and when was each one diagnosed?
- Has the vehicle returned to a retailer or repair shop for the same issue more than once?
- For a diesel, has any AdBlue or emissions warning appeared, and what parts or software were involved?
- Has the Defender been used for off-road driving, towing, construction access or flood-prone routes?
- What body, suspension, steering or underbody repairs have been completed?
- Can I see the original invoices, diagnostic reports and recall-completion records?
- Will you allow a cold start, a varied-road test drive and an independent inspection?
The Defender’s survey results justify a careful inspection, not a blanket rejection. A well-documented example with a clean diagnostic assessment and VIN-verified recall status gives you substantially better evidence than a car selected solely for its survey score or advertised specification.
