Land crabs spend most of adulthood on land, while marine crabs are primarily aquatic. That difference affects nearly every part of their biology. Marine crabs use gills designed for continuous water flow; terrestrial species commonly retain gills but modify the branchial chamber and add vascularized, lung-like surfaces so they can exchange gases in air. Many land crabs mate on land yet must migrate to the coast to release eggs, because their larvae develop in seawater before young crabs return inland.
The labels are ecological rather than taxonomic. “Land crab” includes species with very different degrees of dependence on water, and intertidal or semi-terrestrial crabs blur the boundary. The most accurate comparison uses typical patterns, then checks the biology of the particular species.
Land crab and marine crab: the essential comparison
Adult habitat is the clearest distinction. Marine crabs live in seawater or connected intertidal habitats for most of their lives. Land crabs occupy forests, coastal vegetation, islands and other terrestrial settings, often sheltering in burrows. They may visit water to prevent dehydration, feed, molt or reproduce, but land is their normal adult environment.

A U.S. government description calls the life cycle of many land crabs a “marriage between the marine and terrestrial worlds.” It is a useful way to understand why an animal can be land-dwelling as an adult yet still depend on the ocean for its next generation.
| Comparison point | Land crabs (typical pattern) | Marine crabs (typical pattern) |
|---|---|---|
| Adult habitat | Forest, coastal or island land; burrows are common | Seawater, sea floor, estuaries or intertidal water |

| Larval habitat | Marine in many well-known land crabs; some species use freshwater or protected terrestrial chambers | Marine for the great majority of familiar marine crabs |
| Migration requirement | Often seasonal movement between inland habitat and the shore | Usually no land-to-sea breeding migration, although movements within marine habitats can be extensive |
“Typically” matters in every row. Semi-terrestrial crabs may alternate between air and water daily, and some land crabs have unusual reproductive systems. No single respiratory organ or life cycle describes all species called land crabs.
Where land crabs live
Land crabs are found on tropical and subtropical coasts, islands and humid mainland forests. Many occupy ground-level burrows under leaf litter, roots or rocks. A burrow provides shade, stable humidity and protection from predators and heat. It can also serve as a refuge during dry weather or when the crab must remain away from seawater for long periods.

Some species live well beyond the immediate shoreline. In a forest, a crab may forage on fallen plant material, seedlings, fungi or animal matter while returning to a burrow that retains moisture. Distance from the sea does not necessarily mean independence from it: the same population may make a long breeding migration when females are ready to release eggs.
Coastal and island habitats
Other land crabs live in vegetation close to beaches, mangroves or rocky coasts. These settings shorten the trip to seawater and can support frequent contact with spray, puddles or saturated soil. Island populations are especially visible during breeding migrations because large numbers of adults may converge on a narrow shoreline.
Intertidal and semi-terrestrial boundaries
Intertidal crabs occupy a boundary rather than a purely marine or terrestrial niche. They may feed in water at high tide and remain exposed to air at low tide. Semi-terrestrial species can move between both media without a single permanent “land” or “sea” phase. For these crabs, habitat should be described by how long they remain immersed, how they ventilate their gills and where they reproduce, not by appearance alone.
How marine and land crabs breathe
Crabs do not breathe with a human-style pair of lungs. Their basic respiratory equipment is the gill, a set of thin, vascularized surfaces that exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide. The challenge is that a gill designed for water is mechanically fragile in air: without water supporting the lamellae, the surfaces can collapse or dry, reducing the area available for gas exchange.

Marine crabs and water-breathing gills
Marine crab gills are ventilated by moving water through the branchial chamber. The crab’s appendages create currents that carry dissolved oxygen across the gill surfaces while carbon dioxide leaves the blood. Seawater also supplies the moisture that keeps the lamellae open. A marine crab stranded in dry air may survive for a while if its gills remain damp, but the respiratory system is not optimized for prolonged exposure.

That does not mean every marine crab dies immediately on land. Intertidal species regularly tolerate air during low tide, and a shaded, humid animal can maintain gas exchange longer than one exposed to sun and wind. Survival time depends on species, temperature, humidity, body size and whether the gill chamber remains moist.
What changes in a terrestrial crab
Terrestrial crabs commonly retain gills because those structures remain useful when the crab is immersed or when humidity is high. At the same time, the branchial chamber is modified to hold moist air and to support additional vascularized surfaces. In several lineages, part of the chamber functions as a lung-like organ. The organ is not a vertebrate lung transplanted into a crab; it is a crustacean adaptation built from existing branchial anatomy.
As Smithsonian science writer Vicky Watson-Zink explains, “But land crabs are different because gills are not as useful on land as they are in the water. And so land crabs have actually evolved a lung.” The practical meaning is that terrestrial species shift more of their gas exchange to air-adapted surfaces while still using gills under suitable conditions.
Gills, lung-like surfaces and changing conditions
The balance between gill and lung-like exchange is flexible. A crab entering seawater can ventilate its gills more effectively; a crab climbing onto land relies more heavily on the air-breathing portion of the branchial chamber. Exercise, immersion, humidity and temperature all change oxygen demand and the rate at which water is lost.
Calling the organ simply a “lung” is useful for explaining the adaptation, but it should not imply that every land crab has the same structure or that every species can remain dry indefinitely. Some terrestrial crabs have extensive air-breathing modifications; others remain strongly tied to humid burrows or regular immersion.
How land crabs conserve water on land
Living in air creates a water-budget problem. Gills must stay moist, yet exposed surfaces lose water through evaporation. Terrestrial crabs address that problem behaviorally and anatomically.
Burrows and humidity
A burrow reduces wind and direct solar heating. Deeper soil often changes temperature more slowly than the surface and can retain water after rain. By retreating underground during the hottest or driest part of the day, a crab lowers evaporative loss while preserving a humid respiratory environment.

Closing or shielding the branchial chamber
Land crabs can limit unnecessary water loss by controlling how air moves through the branchial chamber. The chamber’s shape and internal surfaces help keep a thin film of moisture around respiratory tissues. These adaptations allow gas exchange without exposing the entire gill surface to rapidly moving dry air.

Salt and fluid regulation
Coastal land crabs may encounter both freshwater rain and salty spray. Their transport tissues and excretory organs regulate salts so that valuable ions are not lost whenever water is exchanged. The exact mechanisms differ by species, which is why a crab that thrives on an island cannot automatically be expected to tolerate a dry continental environment or freshwater conditions.
Why land crabs return to the ocean
The usual reason is reproduction. In many land-crab species, adults can mate and feed on land, but eggs or newly hatched larvae need seawater. Females therefore carry mature eggs to the coast and release them into the surf, an estuary or another marine-influenced site. Ocean water provides the buoyancy, oxygen, food and chemical conditions required by the early developmental stages.
The Christmas Island red crab migration
Christmas Island red crabs illustrate the pattern dramatically. Adults spend most of the year in the island’s forest. At the start of the breeding season, they move toward the coast, with timing linked to rainfall and lunar or tidal conditions. Males and females mate in or near burrows close to the shore. Females then release their eggs at high tide, allowing waves to carry them into seawater.

During that period they pass through planktonic stages, molt and gradually acquire the body form of a young crab. Once the young crabs leave the water, they move inland and begin the terrestrial phase of the life cycle. Adults must repeat the migration in subsequent breeding seasons, so roads, development or altered drainage along the route can affect the population even when the forest habitat itself appears intact.
A migration is not proof that adults are marine
Seeing thousands of crabs at a beach can lead to the mistaken conclusion that they are marine animals. Habitat is determined by where adults spend most of their lives, not only by where eggs are released. A land crab may make one essential trip to the shore each year and still spend the remaining months feeding, sheltering and growing inland.
Land-crab eggs and larvae versus marine-crab eggs and larvae
The earliest stages often reveal the strongest connection between land crabs and the sea. Adult habitat and larval habitat can be completely different.
Egg release
Many terrestrial crabs carry eggs on abdominal appendages while they are on land. Near the coast, the female enters water or the edge of the surf and releases the eggs. The eggs hatch into tiny swimming larvae rather than miniature versions of the adult crab.
Marine crabs generally release eggs directly into the water. Females may carry the egg mass until hatching, but the release site is already part of the marine environment in which the larvae will feed and develop. The transition from egg to larva therefore does not require a land-to-sea journey by the parent.

Larval feeding and development
Crab larvae are planktonic. They drift or swim in the water column, molt through several stages and consume appropriately sized planktonic food. Their body shape, swimming appendages and feeding structures are adapted to this temporary life, not to walking on the bottom or living in a burrow.
For the Christmas Island red crab, the marine larval period lasts about one month before young crabs emerge and move inland. The duration is a species-specific example, not a universal timetable for all land crabs.
Marine red king crab example
NOAA’s red king crab profile reports annual reproduction by females, with approximately 50,000 to 500,000 eggs, and larvae that feed on plankton for two to three months before settling. Those figures describe red king crab, not every marine crab. They demonstrate how a fully marine species can keep both adults and larvae within the ocean while a land crab divides its life between terrestrial adults and marine early stages.
| Stage | Many land crabs | Marine crabs |
|---|---|---|
| Adult mating | Often on land, frequently in or near burrows | Usually in water |
| Egg release | Female travels to the coast and releases eggs into seawater or surf | Female releases eggs in the marine environment |
| Hatching environment | Marine water in many species | Marine water |
| Larval life | Planktonic marine stages are common; some exceptions use other environments | Typically planktonic marine stages |
| Settlement | Juveniles leave the water and migrate inland | Young crabs settle in a marine or estuarine habitat |
How reproduction shapes the adult body and behavior
Reproduction imposes demands beyond egg production. A land crab must store enough energy to walk to the coast, tolerate crowding, find a mate and time egg release with suitable tides. A female may also need to keep the egg mass moist during the journey without releasing it prematurely.
Once at the coast, tidal timing matters because larvae need to be carried away from the shoreline into water with adequate oxygen and food. If release occurs too early or too late in the tidal cycle, larvae may be stranded or swept into unsuitable conditions. This is why migrations can be synchronized across a population rather than spread randomly through the year.
Marine crabs face different constraints. Their reproductive behavior is coordinated with water temperature, depth, currents, salinity and food availability for larvae. A species that remains offshore may release eggs in one location and rely on currents to transport larvae to nursery grounds; an estuarine species may instead keep larvae in brackish water. The shared feature is aquatic development, not a single universal strategy.
How to tell whether a crab is truly terrestrial
Appearance alone is unreliable. Use several observations together:
Recommended Free Tools
- Check where adults spend normal time. A crab found in a forest burrow is showing stronger evidence of terrestrial adaptation than one briefly exposed at low tide.
- Look for a permanent shelter. Repeated use of humid burrows, root cavities or leaf-litter refuges indicates a strategy for living out of water.
- Observe movement patterns. A predictable inland-to-coast migration during a breeding season suggests a land-based adult with marine larvae.
- Consider respiratory behavior. Species that remain active in air while keeping the branchial chamber moist are more likely to have substantial air-breathing modifications, but behavior cannot identify the exact organ.
- Identify the species before generalizing. Color, claw size and body shape do not establish whether larvae are marine or whether adults require freshwater, seawater or humid soil.
Common misconceptions
“Land crabs have no gills.”
Most terrestrial crabs retain gills. They modify the branchial chamber and add air-breathing capacity rather than replacing every gill with a single new organ.

“A land crab has a vertebrate lung.”
The term “lung” describes a vascularized, air-adapted respiratory surface in the crab’s branchial region. It is not the same anatomical system found in mammals, birds or reptiles.
“Marine crabs cannot survive exposure to air.”
Intertidal species routinely experience air, and many marine crabs can survive temporarily when their gills remain wet. Prolonged dry exposure is the problem, especially in heat or wind.
“All land crabs reproduce entirely on land.”
Many mate on land but release eggs at the coast. Their larvae then develop in seawater before the juveniles return inland.

Land crab is an ecological category, not one uniform lineage. Species differ in respiratory anatomy, dependence on immersion and the environment used by their larvae. Some use seawater, while others may use freshwater or protected terrestrial brood chambers.
A species-level example in context: Christmas Island red crabs
A peer-reviewed study published in The Biological Bulletin in 2001 estimated 43.7 million adult Christmas Island red crabs and analyzed their annual breeding migration. The figure is a historical estimate from that study, not a current population count. It is valuable because it shows the scale at which a land-to-sea life cycle can operate: millions of terrestrial adults may depend on a narrow coastal window for successful reproduction.
The example also demonstrates why conservation cannot focus on only one habitat. Protecting forest burrows without keeping migration routes open can interrupt breeding. Conversely, protecting the shoreline while allowing inland habitat to dry out can reduce the number of adults reaching the coast.
Further reading on land-crab biology
For a deeper treatment of respiratory anatomy, reproduction and development, Biology of the Land Crabs from Cambridge University Press is a specialized reference. It is more detailed than a general field guide and is useful when a species-level question cannot be answered from the broad land-versus-marine distinction.
