Choose a WordPress one-click image when the server’s main job is to run WordPress and you want a guided, short setup. Choose a LAMP image when you need a general PHP platform, several sites, custom applications, or direct control of Apache, PHP, the database and deployment layout.
Both options can host WordPress. The difference is where the provider stops configuring the server: a LAMP image gives you the infrastructure layer, while a WordPress image supplies that layer plus a prepared WordPress installation and first-login workflow.
What you are actually choosing
A server image is a prebuilt disk configuration deployed when you create an instance. It determines which operating-system packages, web server, PHP runtime, database, firewall rules and application defaults are already present. You can change those components later, but the image affects the amount of work required before the first page is served.

LAMP means Linux, Apache, MySQL or MariaDB, and PHP. A LAMP image normally gives you a working web stack, not a finished website. You still install an application, create its database and credentials, configure domains and virtual hosts, issue certificates, and establish an update and backup routine.

DigitalOcean’s current LAMP 1-Click deploys on Ubuntu 24.04. It runs MySQL locally by default, with the option to attach a managed MySQL database. The image configures UFW for SSH, HTTP and HTTPS, performs MySQL hardening and includes Certbot. Its default web root is /var/www/html; Apache virtual hosts can be added for separate domains.
A WordPress one-click image is an application bundle
A WordPress image packages the CMS with a chosen runtime and server configuration. DigitalOcean’s current catalog lists Ubuntu 24.04, PHP 8.3 FPM, MySQL 8.0, Caddy, WordPress 7.1.2, WP-CLI and a firewall. Its documented first-login flow creates the WordPress administrator account, and HTTPS is enabled automatically during that first-login setup. These catalog versions are time-sensitive; confirm the values shown in the image catalog when you deploy.
AWS Lightsail describes its WordPress blueprint as a preconfigured, ready-to-use image. Its separate LAMP blueprint includes PHP, Apache, MariaDB, phpMyAdmin and Composer. Lightsail also lists a Bitnami LAMP package with ready-to-run Apache, MySQL, PHP and phpMyAdmin. The exact package and defaults depend on which Lightsail image you select.

Choose LAMP when the server must remain general-purpose
You are deploying custom PHP code
Framework applications, internal tools, APIs and bespoke PHP sites generally fit LAMP better. You decide the directory structure, PHP extensions, Apache modules, virtual-host rules and release process instead of adapting a WordPress-oriented layout.
You need several unrelated sites
Apache virtual hosts let one LAMP server route different domains to different document roots. That is useful when a server will host a company site, an API and a staging application, or when you need separate PHP applications that do not share WordPress’s assumptions.

You need database and deployment control
A LAMP deployment leaves the database topology and schema process to you. DigitalOcean’s image starts with MySQL locally, but its documented option to attach managed MySQL lets you separate database operations from the application server. You can also choose how releases, staging directories, environment variables and access permissions are organized.
You want to avoid a CMS-specific starting point
WordPress is not a requirement for a LAMP server. Starting with LAMP keeps the machine framework-neutral, which is valuable when the application choice may change or when several teams will deploy different PHP projects.

Choose WordPress one-click when publishing is the priority
You want the shortest path to a working site
The image has already selected the operating system, PHP mode, database, web server and WordPress package. The documented first-login flow creates the administrator account, and HTTPS is enabled automatically in that flow on the current DigitalOcean image. You spend your time on the domain, theme, content and plugins rather than assembling the runtime.
You want WordPress tools available immediately
WP-CLI is included in the current DigitalOcean catalog entry, so administrative tasks can be scripted from the beginning. Themes, plugins, media and WordPress settings are available without first installing the CMS and wiring it to a database.
You are comfortable with opinionated defaults
The convenience comes from accepting the image’s choices, such as Caddy and PHP-FPM in the current DigitalOcean bundle. Those defaults are sensible for a WordPress-first server, but they are less neutral than a plain Apache/PHP installation. If your deployment requires a particular Apache module, unusual virtual-host arrangement or non-WordPress application, LAMP is usually the cleaner starting point.

What setup looks like in practice
LAMP deployment checklist
- Create the instance from the LAMP image. Confirm the Ubuntu release and whether the image will use local MySQL or a managed MySQL service.
- Secure initial access. Use the provider’s SSH-key or account-access controls, retain the UFW rules for SSH, HTTP and HTTPS, and remove any access method your policy does not need.
- Set the hostname and DNS. Point each domain or subdomain to the instance’s address before testing public URLs.
- Create the application database and account. Use a separate database user for each application rather than sharing administrative credentials.
- Install the application. Place its files under an intentional document root instead of leaving unrelated projects in
/var/www/html. - Add Apache virtual hosts. Map each domain to its document root and enable the configuration only after checking that it points to the intended files.
- Issue TLS certificates. The image includes Certbot; use it for each public hostname and verify renewal before treating HTTPS as complete.
- Apply application and OS updates. Record the PHP extensions, Apache modules and database settings your application needs so the configuration can be rebuilt.
WordPress one-click deployment checklist
- Create the instance from the WordPress image. Check the catalog’s current Ubuntu, PHP, database, web-server and WordPress versions; catalog values can change.
- Complete the first-login setup. Follow the image’s wizard to create the administrator account. Use a unique, long password and protect the account with the strongest available sign-in controls.
- Confirm HTTPS and the canonical URL. The current DigitalOcean flow enables HTTPS automatically at first login; test both the home page and the administrator area over HTTPS.
- Point DNS and test the site. Check the bare domain,
wwwvariant if used, redirects, media uploads and permalink handling. - Install only required themes and plugins. Remove inactive components and keep a record of the versions that remain.
- Configure backups before publishing. A one-click image is not a backup of your content, database or uploaded media.
- Document the image’s defaults. Note the server, PHP-FPM, database and web-server choices so troubleshooting does not assume an Apache layout that is not present.
Is WordPress one-click faster than installing WordPress on LAMP?
It is faster in setup effort, not necessarily in page-rendering speed. A one-click image removes the package installation, database wiring, web-server configuration and initial TLS work that you would perform on a bare LAMP image. Once both servers are correctly configured, response time depends on instance resources, PHP configuration, caching, database workload, theme and plugins, media delivery and traffic patterns.

Conversely, a one-click image can still become slow if plugins, queries, images or traffic exceed the instance’s capacity. “One-click” describes provisioning convenience, not a performance guarantee.
Which option gives you more control?
LAMP gives you the broader control surface. You choose Apache modules, PHP settings, database placement, virtual hosts, application directories and deployment tooling. That control helps when an application has unusual extension requirements, needs multiple runtimes or must coexist with non-WordPress services.
The WordPress image trades some of that neutrality for consistency. Its server and runtime are selected to get WordPress online with fewer decisions. You can still modify the machine after deployment, but replacing the image’s assumptions may erase much of the reason you selected it and can complicate future support.
Can you run other PHP applications on a WordPress image?
Technically, a WordPress image is still a Linux server with PHP and a database, so additional PHP code can be installed. The practical question is whether the image’s web-server, PHP-FPM, directory and security defaults suit that application. You may need separate host rules, document roots, database users and PHP settings.

If the second application is a small companion service with compatible requirements, adding it may be reasonable. If the server will host several independent applications, or if one requires Apache-specific behavior while the image uses a different web server, begin with LAMP instead. The general-purpose image avoids an avoidable migration later.
Maintenance and security responsibilities
Neither image is maintenance-free. The image handles initial packaging; you remain responsible for the running system.
- Operating system: apply Ubuntu security updates and reboot when required.
- Web server and PHP: track Apache or Caddy, PHP and PHP-extension updates, and test application compatibility before production rollout.
- Database: patch MySQL or MariaDB, restrict administrative access and verify that backups can be restored.
- WordPress: on a WordPress image, update core, themes and plugins, remove abandoned components and review administrator accounts.
- Network access: keep only required firewall ports open, protect SSH, and avoid using database administrator credentials in application configuration.
- Backups: retain copies of the database, uploaded media, configuration and secrets outside the instance; periodically perform a test restore.
- Monitoring: watch disk space, memory, CPU, certificate expiry, failed logins and application errors before users report an outage.
A WordPress bundle reduces the number of installation decisions at day one; it does not transfer these operational duties to the image provider.

Keep the database local
Local MySQL or MariaDB is simple and usually has low network latency. It also means the application and database share the instance’s CPU, memory, disk and failure boundary. For a small site, that trade-off may be acceptable; for a growing or operationally sensitive service, plan how the database will be backed up and moved.

Use a managed database
DigitalOcean’s LAMP documentation describes attaching a managed MySQL database. Separating the database can simplify upgrades, backups and independent scaling, but it introduces network configuration, connection security and service-cost considerations. Test latency and failover behavior rather than assuming the change is transparent.

Use AWS integrations where they fit
AWS documents managed MySQL and Aurora options for Lightsail WordPress deployments, along with S3 media offload and CDN paths. Those integrations can reduce pressure on the instance when media or database workloads grow, but they add services, credentials and configuration that must be operated. Select them for a concrete scaling or availability need, not merely because they are available.
Common failure points and fixes
The domain shows the wrong site
On LAMP, check the Apache virtual host, document root and DNS record. On a WordPress image, verify the canonical URL, redirect behavior and the image’s web-server configuration. A stale DNS record or a host rule pointing to the wrong directory can look like an application failure.
HTTPS works for one hostname but not another
Certificates are issued per hostname set. Confirm that every public name resolves to the instance, then request or configure coverage for each name and test renewal. Do not assume that enabling HTTPS for the bare domain automatically covers every subdomain.

Verify the database host, name, user and password, then check whether the database is local or managed. A migration from LAMP to a managed service commonly fails when the application still points to the old local address or when the managed service blocks the instance’s network access.
A plugin or application breaks after a PHP update
Check the component’s supported PHP range, reproduce the error in a staging copy and update or replace the incompatible component. On LAMP you control the PHP installation; on a WordPress image you must also account for the image’s packaged PHP-FPM choice.
The server runs out of disk space
Inspect uploads, database growth, logs and backup archives separately. Remove only verified temporary data, move large media or backups to an appropriate service, and set monitoring thresholds before the filesystem reaches capacity.
A practical selection checklist
Select LAMP if most of these statements are true:
- The primary workload is custom PHP, a framework, an API or more than one application.
- You need Apache virtual hosts and deliberate per-site directory layouts.
- You require control over PHP extensions, web-server modules or database placement.
- You expect the project’s framework or deployment model to change.
- You have the time and skills to configure TLS, updates, backups and monitoring.
Select WordPress one-click if most of these statements are true:
- The server’s main purpose is one WordPress site or a WordPress-first project.
- You want a guided administrator setup instead of assembling the CMS yourself.
- You prefer packaged choices for the runtime, database and web server.
- You want WP-CLI and WordPress components available immediately.
- You accept responsibility for ongoing WordPress, plugin, PHP, database and OS maintenance.
Bottom line
For a single WordPress site, the one-click image is usually the efficient choice: it packages the CMS and runtime, guides first login and, in the current DigitalOcean flow, enables HTTPS during setup. For custom PHP, multiple sites, mixed workloads or strict infrastructure control, start with LAMP. WordPress can be installed on LAMP later, while converting a heavily customized WordPress image into a neutral multi-application server often creates unnecessary configuration work.
