Short answer: keep application code and releases owned by a deployment or login account, run Apache and PHP under the operating system’s web-service account, and grant that account read/traverse access to code plus write access only to specific runtime directories. The account is often www-data on Debian-family systems and apache on Amazon Linux, but you must verify the account used by your active service. MySQL data and runtime files belong to the mysql operating-system user. Avoid chmod -R 777: it makes every local user and a compromised process able to change the tree.
The ownership model that works
A LAMP server combines Linux, Apache HTTP Server, MySQL and PHP. Linux treats each process as a user with specific group memberships and permissions, so ownership is an operational and security boundary rather than a cosmetic setting. A sound layout separates three roles:
- Deployment identity: a named administrator, release account or deployment service owns application code, configuration and release operations.
- Web-service identity: Apache and PHP run as the distribution’s service account. It normally reads and traverses the application but writes only where the application genuinely needs runtime data.
- Database identity: MySQL runs as
mysqland owns its data and other resources that require database-service access.
This separation gives you accountability for releases and limits the damage if a PHP vulnerability lets an attacker control the web process. A compromised web process should not automatically be able to replace the application, read deployment secrets or alter database files.
Who should own the application files?
Code and configuration
The deployment account should own PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, templates and application configuration. That account performs releases, updates and rollbacks. Apache/PHP should generally have read and directory-traverse access to those paths, not ownership and unrestricted write access.

Keep secrets out of a web-readable document root whenever possible. Database credentials, private keys and other sensitive configuration should be stored outside directories that Apache can serve directly, with permissions that allow the application to read them only through the intended service path.
Runtime data
Define a short, explicit list of writable directories, such as uploads/, cache directories, session storage and generated assets. Give the web-service identity write access to those directories and leave the rest of the release tree read-only to it. A writeable upload directory should not make the entire parent tree writeable.

Why the account name differs
www-data is common in Debian-family examples, while Amazon Linux documentation commonly uses the apache group. These are conventions, not interchangeable constants. Check the active systemd unit, process list and distribution documentation before changing ownership. Changing files to www-data on a host whose service runs as apache will not grant the expected access.

How Unix permissions translate into LAMP behavior
Owner, group and other
For every path, Linux evaluates the process against the file’s owner, then the owning group, then the other class. The first matching class is used. A deployment account and Apache can therefore collaborate through a group without making files world-writable. Access-control lists (ACLs) are another option when two named roles need different permissions that the basic owner/group model cannot express cleanly.
Files and directories are different
| Permission | On a file | On a directory |
|---|---|---|
Read (r) |
Read the file’s contents | List names in the directory |
Write (w) |
Change the file’s contents | Create, delete or rename entries in the directory |
Execute (x) |
Run a program; usually unnecessary for PHP, HTML, CSS and uploaded data | Traverse the directory and access a known entry |
The distinction explains many “PHP permission denied” reports. PHP may be able to read an existing file but unable to create a new upload because the containing directory lacks write permission. Conversely, granting write permission to a file does not let PHP create another file beside it; creation and deletion are controlled by the directory.
Ownership and modes
chown changes the owning user and group. Mode bits such as 0640, 0750 or 2775 determine read, write and execute access for owner, group and other. Use the smallest mode that satisfies the deployment and runtime workflow. Do not use recursive broad permissions as a substitute for identifying the failing operation.

Deployment layouts and their trade-offs
Choose a layout by asking who owns releases, who runs Apache/PHP, which exact paths are writable, whether a shared group or ACL is needed, how secrets are isolated and whether SELinux or AppArmor adds policy restrictions.
| Layout | Release owner | Apache/PHP access | Writable paths | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deployment-owned code | Named deployment account | Read/traverse through group or ACL | Only upload, cache, session and generated-output directories | Preferred for most production applications |
| Shared deployment group | Deployment account and approved group members | Group read/traverse; group write only where required | Specific shared directories | Teams that release from more than one account |
| Amazon Linux-style document root | Login user with Apache group collaboration | Apache group can add, delete and edit document-root content | Document root under the documented mode | Useful as an AWS example, but not a universal production default |
| ACL-based collaboration | Named deployment identity | Explicit ACL entries for the web service and deployers | Only paths listed in ACLs | When owner/group bits cannot express the required roles |
Amazon Linux guidance uses group ownership and mode 2775 on /var/www, allowing the login user and Apache group to add, delete and edit document-root content. The leading 2 sets the setgid bit so new entries inherit the directory’s group. Treat this as a documented deployment pattern, not permission to apply 2775 recursively to every production tree. If only one subdirectory accepts uploads, a narrower writable exception is safer.
What Apache and PHP normally need
Read and traverse the release
For a request to reach a PHP script, the web process needs execute (traverse) permission on every parent directory and read permission on the script and any files it loads. A common failure is a restrictive parent such as /var/www/site even though the file itself appears readable. Directory traversal must be checked from the filesystem root down to the target.

Write only where the application writes
Uploads require directory write and execute permission. Caches, sessions and generated thumbnails have the same requirement. Existing files may additionally need file write permission when the application updates them in place. Give those rights to the service account directly, through its group, or with an ACL; do not grant write permission to every user.

Uploaded data should be kept in a dedicated directory with the narrowest access possible. Separate user content from application code and configuration so a file written by PHP cannot replace a script, configuration file or release artifact.
MySQL ownership is a separate boundary
Most MySQL installation files can be root-owned. Oracle’s Secure Deployment Guide identifies the exceptions that need access by the mysql operating-system user: the data directory, error log, mysql-files directory, PID file and socket. The MySQL user also needs read access to configuration files and binaries. Do not make database files owned by Apache merely because PHP connects to MySQL; PHP should use the database service, not access its on-disk files.

The MySQL Reference Manual documents default UMASK=0640 and UMASK_DIR=0750; database directories are created with 0750 by default. If a table or file operation reports an operating-system permission error, inspect the effective umask, directory traversal, owner and group, service unit and mandatory-access-control policy before broadening modes.
Why chmod -R 777 is unsafe
Mode 777 grants read, write and execute to owner, group and everyone else. Applied recursively, it lets every local account and any compromised process alter application code, inject scripts, replace configuration and tamper with runtime data. It also masks the real fault, making later auditing difficult. Execute on ordinary data files is unnecessary, and world-write access is almost never required for a web application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA temporary broad permission can help prove that a mode is the cause, but remove it immediately and replace it with a role-specific owner, group or ACL on the smallest affected directory. Keep release code and secrets outside the writable paths even while diagnosing the problem.
Diagnose a PHP or Apache permission error
- Identify the exact failing path and operation. Determine whether PHP is reading a file, creating an upload, modifying an existing file, deleting an entry or traversing a directory. Application and Apache error logs usually reveal the path.
- Confirm the process identity. Use
ps, service status or the service-manager configuration to see which user and groups run Apache and PHP. Do not assume the account iswww-dataorapache. - Walk every parent directory. Run
namei -l /var/www/example/pathon Linux, then inspect each owner, group and mode. A missing execute bit on any parent blocks access even when the final file looks correct. - Separate read/traverse from write/create/delete. For reads, check file read plus directory traversal. For creation, deletion and renaming, check write and execute on the containing directory. For in-place updates, check write on the existing file as well.
- Grant the narrowest access. Change the owning group, add the service account to an appropriate group, or apply an ACL to the specific runtime directory. Avoid changing the entire document root when one cache or upload path is failing.
- Check mandatory-access-control policy. SELinux or AppArmor can deny an operation even when Unix owner and mode bits look correct. Review their audit or denial logs and the policy attached to the service.
- Retest as the service identity and read logs. Reproduce the exact operation, confirm the expected file or directory is created, and verify that no unrelated path became writable.
- Remove diagnostic exceptions. Revert temporary world-write modes, restore least privilege and keep database files, private keys and secrets outside web-writable paths.
Practical checks before changing permissions
- Record the failing pathname exactly; relative paths can resolve somewhere other than the directory you inspected.
- Check symbolic links and the permissions of their target directories.
- Confirm that the service was restarted or reloaded after a configuration change when the service manager requires it.
- Verify disk space, read-only mounts and filesystem errors; not every “permission denied” symptom is fixed by changing mode bits.
- Review recent deployment changes so a release process has not recreated a directory with a different owner or mode.
A maintainable permission policy
Document the deployment account, Apache/PHP account, MySQL account, release root, document root and each writable runtime directory. State whether collaboration uses a group or ACL, where secrets live, and which SELinux/AppArmor profile applies. During every release, verify that code remains deployment-owned and that only the documented runtime directories are writable by the web process.
Audit permissions after framework upgrades, server migrations and changes to PHP workers. A deployment that silently changes ownership can either break uploads or tempt an operator to use 777. Explicit checks catch both problems while preserving role separation.
Key decisions at a glance
| Question | Safe default | Exception to document |
|---|---|---|
| Who owns releases? | Named deployment or administrator account | Controlled shared deployment group or service |
| Who runs Apache/PHP? | Distribution service account, verified from the active unit | Custom account defined by your service configuration |
| Where can the web process write? | Only uploads, caches, sessions and generated output | Additional path required by a documented application feature |
| Who owns MySQL data? | mysql operating-system user |
Only a vendor-documented service-account arrangement |
| What if owner/group bits are insufficient? | Use a narrowly scoped ACL | Redesign group ownership if ACL complexity becomes hard to audit |
Bottom line
Make deployment ownership, web execution and database storage separate by design. Let Apache/PHP read and traverse the release, write only to explicitly required runtime directories, and keep MySQL’s data and runtime resources with mysql. Verify the actual service identity, inspect every parent directory, account for SELinux or AppArmor, and fix the smallest failing path. Least privilege is both the reliable way to resolve permission errors and the safer alternative to recursive chmod -R 777.
