Choose by the console generation first: shadPS4 is the project to investigate for PlayStation 4 games, while KytyPS5 targets PlayStation 5 software. They are not interchangeable libraries. For controllers, shadPS4 is the clearer choice because its README explicitly documents Xbox and DualShock support plus configurable keyboard and mouse input. KytyPS5 may boot 2D and 3D games, but the reviewed project documentation does not establish controller support. In either case, check the individual game’s current compatibility report and the exact emulator build; a successful boot is not proof that a game is playable to completion.
The short answer
KytyPS5 and shadPS4 solve different problems. A PS4 title belongs in your shadPS4 investigation; a PS5 title belongs in your KytyPS5 investigation. Neither project should be selected merely because it starts a game or reaches a menu.
- For PS4 games: start with shadPS4, then verify the title in the project’s compatibility resources.
- For PS5 games: start with KytyPS5, then check its community compatibility list for the exact build and game status.
- For a documented controller path: shadPS4’s README says Xbox and DualShock controllers work out of the box and allows customizable keyboard and mouse mappings.
- For KytyPS5 controllers: the reviewed README does not document support, so behavior must be confirmed in current release notes or with the maintainers rather than assumed from a successful boot.
Both projects are early-stage. Treat compatibility as a per-game, per-version question, and keep legally obtained game files and any required system software in mind during setup.

The generation distinction is decisive. A PS4 emulator is not a general substitute for a PS5 translation layer, and a PS5 project cannot be evaluated by how well it handles a PS4 library. If a game has versions for both consoles, identify the exact release you own before checking compatibility.

What shadPS4 currently documents
shadPS4 describes itself as an early PlayStation 4 emulator for Windows, Linux and macOS. Its core does not include a graphical user interface; the README directs end users to the QtLauncher for a usable front end. The same documentation warns that users should not expect a flawless experience and sends them to the official compatibility resource for game-specific information.
That architecture matters when you plan an installation. Downloading or building the core alone is not the same as having the end-user launcher described by the project. Follow the current project instructions for the release you choose, and verify that the launcher and emulator build match the compatibility report you are using.
macOS requirements for shadPS4
The current README specifies macOS 26.0 or later and says Intel Macs are unsupported. A Mac that runs an older macOS release, or an Intel model, therefore does not meet the documented platform requirement even if another application runs normally on it. Confirm the operating system and processor architecture before spending time on game files or controller configuration.

What “early” means in practice
Early emulator development can produce a wide spread of outcomes: one title may open, another may stop during loading, and a third may reach gameplay but fail later. The project’s own warning is why the compatibility report should be your first stop for every title, not an assumption based on the emulator’s name or a video showing a menu.
What KytyPS5 currently documents
KytyPS5 presents itself as a PlayStation 5 translation layer for Windows and Linux, with experimental macOS support. Its README says it can boot both 2D and 3D games, while also warning that compatibility, stability and performance can vary between versions. Crashes and graphical glitches are possible, and the project points users to a community compatibility list.

macOS is a separate experiment
KytyPS5 describes x86-64 execution on Apple Silicon through Rosetta 2 and Vulkan through MoltenVK. That is materially different from its documented Windows and Linux targets. If macOS is your host, treat the platform as an experiment, check the current release notes, and expect that a result on Windows or Linux may not transfer to the Mac configuration.
Booting is only the first milestone
“Can boot” can mean that an executable launches or that a title reaches an initial screen. It does not establish reliable gameplay, a stable frame rate, correct graphics, working audio, saved-game behavior or completion. Use the compatibility list’s reported status for the exact title and emulator build, and distinguish a boot, reaching gameplay and completing a game whenever the report provides those distinctions.

- Identify the console version. Confirm whether your copy is the PS4 or PS5 release. A cross-generation title may have separate executables, updates or compatibility reports.
- Open the appropriate project page. Use shadPS4 for PS4 software or KytyPS5 for PS5 software.
- Find the title in the current compatibility resource. Do not rely on a general claim that the emulator boots games. Search for the exact game name, release and reported behavior.
- Record the emulator build or version. Compatibility can change between versions. Write down the build associated with the report before reproducing it.
- Read the status, not just the color or headline. Look for evidence of reaching gameplay and sustained operation, not merely an initial launch.
- Check host-platform notes. A report made on Windows may not predict results on Linux or macOS, especially where macOS support is experimental or has stricter requirements.
- Confirm required system components. shadPS4 compatibility guidance says some PS4 firmware modules are needed for games to behave properly; those modules must be extracted from a legally owned PS4.
- Plan the controller separately. A game’s compatibility status does not prove that its input device works. Use shadPS4’s documented controller options, or seek current KytyPS5-specific confirmation.
The official shadPS4 compatibility-report repository is https://github.com/shadps4-compatibility/shadps4-game-compatibility. Its reporting instructions ask contributors to include the game and emulator version and to provide an untouched log when reporting changes. That level of detail is useful when you compare your result with someone else’s.
Controller support: shadPS4 has the clearer answer
shadPS4 input options
The shadPS4 README explicitly states that Xbox and DualShock controllers work out of the box. It also documents customizable keyboard and mouse input, including mapping mouse movement to joystick input. That gives you two practical fallback paths if a controller is unavailable or a particular game needs a custom layout.
- Plug-and-play expectation: an Xbox or DualShock controller is the documented starting point.
- Custom mapping: keyboard and mouse bindings can be changed rather than accepted as fixed defaults.
- Mouse-as-stick use: the documented mapping can translate mouse movement into joystick input, which may help for games that expect analog movement.
“Works out of the box” describes the project’s general input support; it is not a guarantee that every game’s prompts, vibration behavior or special features will be identical across operating systems and builds.

KytyPS5 controller uncertainty
The KytyPS5 README reviewed for this comparison does not document controller support. Do not infer it from the project’s ability to boot a game, from the fact that the same hardware works with a PlayStation console, or from a report that discusses graphics only. Check current release notes or ask the maintainers about the precise controller and build you intend to use. Controller behavior was not established by the reviewed documentation.

If you are choosing between projects for a PS4 game and want a documented controller path, shadPS4 is the defensible choice. If you are choosing for a PS5 game, the generation requirement still points to KytyPS5; controller uncertainty is a risk to verify rather than a reason to substitute a PS4 emulator that cannot target the same software.

Operating-system support is not the same as game compatibility. It only tells you that the project recognizes the host as a target. The title’s report, emulator version and platform-specific notes still determine whether trying it is worthwhile.
Legal and file-sourcing boundaries
shadPS4’s compatibility guidance says that some PlayStation 4 firmware modules are required for games to behave properly and must be extracted from a legally owned PS4. KytyPS5 states that it does not distribute games or copyrighted system software and instructs users to use game files obtained legally.
- Use games you are legally entitled to use.
- Obtain firmware or system modules through the project’s documented, lawful process from hardware you own where required.
- Do not treat an emulator download as a license for commercial game files or copyrighted system software.
- Keep your emulator build, game version and extracted components documented so that troubleshooting can distinguish a software mismatch from an emulator limitation.
These boundaries are also practical: an unauthorized or incomplete file set can create missing-module errors that look like an emulator compatibility failure.

Common failure modes and what they tell you
The game does not launch
First confirm the console generation and that you are using the matching project. Then compare your emulator build and game version with the compatibility report. For shadPS4, check whether the required PS4 firmware modules are present and correctly extracted through the lawful process described by the project. For KytyPS5, consult the community report for known launch limitations rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
The game reaches a menu but cannot be played
This is a classic example of why boot status is insufficient. Look for a report that explicitly says the title reaches gameplay and remains stable. If the report stops at a menu, treat the game as unconfirmed for normal play.
Graphics are corrupted or the emulator crashes
KytyPS5 warns that graphical glitches and crashes can occur and that compatibility, stability and performance vary by version. Record the exact build, host operating system and point of failure, then compare with current reports. A change between versions can explain why another user’s result differs from yours.
The controller is not detected
On shadPS4, start with the documented Xbox or DualShock path, then inspect the customizable keyboard and mouse mappings as a fallback. On KytyPS5, the reviewed README offers no controller guarantee, so verify support for your exact device and build through current project information instead of assuming that a successful launch proves input support.

Check the project’s platform caveats before comparing results. shadPS4 requires macOS 26.0 or later and excludes Intel Macs. KytyPS5 labels macOS experimental and uses Rosetta 2 and MoltenVK on Apple Silicon. Those differences can change both compatibility and graphics behavior.

Practical choices for common situations
“I own several PS4 games and use Windows.”
Investigate shadPS4. Start with the title reports, note the emulator version, and use an Xbox or DualShock controller if you want the input method explicitly documented by the project. Do not assume that every game in your library will reach playable gameplay.
“I want to run one PS5 game.”
Investigate KytyPS5 because it targets PS5 software. Read the game’s current compatibility entry, check whether the report shows more than a boot, and verify controller behavior separately. A PS4 emulator is not a substitute for this generation.
“I have an Apple Silicon Mac.”
For shadPS4, verify that the Mac runs macOS 26.0 or later. For KytyPS5, expect an experimental path involving Rosetta 2 for x86-64 execution and MoltenVK for Vulkan. Use platform-specific reports and current release notes before treating a test as representative.
“The emulator starts, but I need a reliable play-through.”
Do not stop at a boot report. Choose only titles whose current reports indicate sustained gameplay or completion, and keep the emulator build fixed while you test. If the report does not distinguish those milestones, the evidence is not strong enough to promise a full play-through.
A repeatable test checklist
- Write down the game title, console release and game version.
- Record the emulator name, build or version and host operating system.
- Confirm that your legally obtained game files and any required firmware components match the project’s instructions.
- Test the title first without changing multiple settings at once.
- Record whether it boots, reaches gameplay, remains stable and saves correctly; report only what you actually observe.
- Test the controller independently from graphics: detection, button mapping, analog input and any game-specific controls.
- When reporting a change to shadPS4 compatibility, include the requested version information and an untouched log as the repository instructions specify.
- Recheck the compatibility source after an emulator update, because status can change between versions.
Bottom line for the choice
There is no single winner because the projects target different generations. shadPS4 is the relevant path for PS4 software and has the stronger documented controller story: Xbox and DualShock support is stated, with configurable keyboard and mouse input available. KytyPS5 is the relevant path for PS5 software, but its reviewed documentation leaves controller support unverified and warns that compatibility, stability and performance vary. In both cases, let the exact game report, emulator build and host platform—not a boot screen—decide whether the setup is worth pursuing.
