Most Kubernetes nodes can move to cgroup v2 without application changes when the Linux distribution, kernel, container runtime, and kubelet are compatible and both kubelet and runtime use the systemd cgroup driver. Kubernetes normally detects cgroup v2 automatically. The migration becomes visible when software reads cgroup files directly, derives memory limits from them, or uses a driver configuration that does not match the runtime.

Before changing a node, identify its cgroup mode, verify the kernel and runtime versions, audit agents and application runtimes, and plan to replace or reprovision joined nodes rather than casually changing their driver in place.

What cgroup v2 changes in Kubernetes

Linux control groups (cgroups) enforce and report resource boundaries such as CPU, memory, and process counts. Kubernetes places pods and containers in a hierarchy of cgroups through the kubelet and the container runtime. cgroup v2 is the newer unified hierarchy and API; its file names, controllers, delegation rules, and memory semantics differ from cgroup v1.

Kubernetes has treated cgroup v2 as stable since version 1.25 (2022). For an ordinary pod, the transition should be largely invisible: scheduling, manifests, and resource requests and limits remain Kubernetes concepts. The exceptions are software that opens files under /sys/fs/cgroup, monitoring or security agents that parse cgroup paths, and runtimes that calculate a heap or worker count from the container’s limit.

Kubernetes documentation summarizes the normal behavior conditionally: “The kubelet automatically detects that the OS is running on cgroup v2 and performs accordingly with no additional configuration required.” That assumes the node satisfies the documented operating-system, kernel, runtime, and driver requirements.

Compatibility requirements to verify first

Check every Linux node, not just the control plane. A cluster can contain a mixture of cgroup versions during a rollout, but each node must have a coherent local configuration.

Component Documented baseline or recommendation What to verify on the node
Operating system Linux distribution with cgroup v2 enabled; Kubernetes recommends a distribution that enables v2 by default. Distribution release, boot parameters, and whether the installed image actually mounts a unified hierarchy.
Linux kernel Kernel 5.8 or later. uname -r, then compare with the support policy for the distribution and Kubernetes release.
Container runtime Examples in Kubernetes guidance are containerd 1.4 or later and CRI-O 1.20 or later. Installed runtime and CRI versions, package defaults, and cgroup-driver setting.
Kubelet driver systemd is the recommended driver for cgroup v2. Kubelet configuration or startup arguments, not only what a package claims to default to.
Runtime driver Must match the kubelet driver; use systemd for cgroup v2. Runtime configuration and the effective driver reported by the running service.

These versions are baseline examples from Kubernetes documentation, not a guarantee that every vendor package has identical defaults. Confirm the exact Kubernetes, distribution, kernel, containerd or CRI-O, and systemd versions you operate.

How to tell whether a node uses cgroup v1 or v2

Run this command on the Linux node:

stat -fc %T /sys/fs/cgroup/
  • cgroup2fs means the node is using cgroup v2.
  • tmpfs normally indicates the cgroup v1 layout.

Use the result as a filesystem check, then inspect the hierarchy and services to understand how Kubernetes is placing workloads:

systemctl list-units 'kube*' --type=slice
systemctl list-units 'kube*' --type=scope
systemd-cgls
systemd-cgtop
tree -L 2 -d /sys/fs/cgroup/kubepods.slice

The kubepods.slice path is typical of a systemd-managed v2 hierarchy; distributions and runtime versions can use different names. On systems where you need to find eBPF programs attached to cgroups, the Kubernetes project migration guidance also lists:

bpftool cgroup list /sys/fs/cgroup/*

Run diagnostics with appropriate privileges and on each node image that will participate in the migration. A single successful check on one worker does not establish cluster-wide compatibility.

A safe migration procedure

1. Inventory the current state

Create a node-by-node inventory containing the Kubernetes version, Linux distribution and kernel, cgroup mode, kubelet driver, runtime and CRI versions, and any boot arguments that affect cgroups. Record whether the node is managed by kubeadm, a cloud provider, or another provisioning system. Also list DaemonSets and host agents that mount or read /sys/fs/cgroup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Test the target image and runtime

Use a staging node or disposable cluster built from the same operating-system image and package repositories planned for production. Confirm that the target kernel mounts cgroup v2, the runtime starts, and kubelet joins with matching drivers. Exercise representative workloads, especially those with memory limits, Java or Node.js services, custom monitoring, and security instrumentation.

3. Align kubelet and runtime drivers

Kubernetes recommends systemd for cgroup v2. Both sides must use the same driver. If automatic CRI driver discovery is supported by your installed runtime and Kubernetes release, verify that it is actually enabled and working; do not assume discovery merely because a newer package can provide it.

For kubeadm-managed clusters, kubeadm manages kubelet as a systemd service, so the systemd driver is the recommended choice. Where automatic discovery is unavailable, set the kubelet configuration explicitly:

4. Prepare workloads and agents

Update software that parses cgroup files before moving production nodes. Include standalone cAdvisor DaemonSets, third-party monitoring and security agents, Java runtimes, language libraries that calculate CPU availability, and any in-house code that reads memory or CPU limits. Validate both the host installation and container images; upgrading an agent on the host does not upgrade a bundled library inside an application image.

5. Migrate through replacement or controlled drain

For a worker, follow the normal maintenance sequence: cordon it, drain it with your established eviction policy, reprovision or replace it with the cgroup v2 image, verify the new node, and uncordon it. Respect PodDisruptionBudgets and workload capacity so that draining one node does not overload the remaining nodes.

Kubernetes warns that changing a joined node’s cgroup driver can prevent existing pod sandboxes from being recreated. Restarting kubelet may not repair that state. Replacing the node through the same automation used for routine image updates is usually safer than editing a live node’s driver and hoping existing sandboxes converge.

6. Validate after each batch

After a node returns, confirm the filesystem type, kubelet and runtime health, pod readiness, metrics collection, and application-level resource detection. Check for new sandbox errors, unexplained restarts, memory pressure, or a sudden change in CPU and memory accounting before proceeding to the next batch.

Workloads and runtimes that deserve special review

Monitoring and security software

Agents that read cgroup paths or files can fail even when pods start normally. Review host agents, DaemonSets, admission or security components, and standalone cAdvisor deployments. Kubernetes guidance identifies cAdvisor version 0.43.0 or later as the cgroup v2-compatible line for standalone deployments; confirm the current support statement for the exact build you use.

Java virtual machines

Java has changed its container-resource detection over time. Kubernetes lists these compatibility examples: OpenJDK/HotSpot jdk8u372, 11.0.16, and 15 or later; IBM Semeru 8.0.382.0, 11.0.20.0, and 17.0.8.0 or later; and IBM Java 8.0.8.6 or later. They are reference points, not a substitute for the current documentation from your JVM vendor. Test the exact vendor build and startup flags used in your image.

Go programs using automaxprocs

The Kubernetes page calls out uber-go/automaxprocs version 1.5.1 or higher. Older versions may misread CPU limits under the v2 hierarchy, causing a service to create an unsuitable number of workers. Verify the dependency version in the built binary or module lockfile, not only in source control.

Node.js memory detection

Node.js reads cgroup v2 memory limits through libuv starting with Node.js 20.3.0, according to Kubernetes guidance. The Node.js 18 release line does not reliably detect those limits. An affected process can size its heap against host memory instead of its pod limit and then be terminated by the kernel or kubelet under pressure. If an upgrade is not immediately possible, set an explicit heap ceiling such as --max-old-space-size that leaves room for native memory, sidecars, and the rest of the pod.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The kubelet refuses to start

  • Run stat -fc %T /sys/fs/cgroup/ and confirm the expected mode.
  • Check the kernel and distribution against the target Kubernetes release requirements.
  • Inspect kubelet logs for a driver mismatch or an unsupported cgroup mode.
  • Confirm that the runtime is running and that its configured driver matches kubelet.

Do not disable a safety check without understanding why the node failed. Correct the image, kernel, runtime, or driver alignment first.

Pod sandbox recreation fails after a configuration change

This commonly follows an in-place driver change on a node that was already joined to the cluster. Existing sandbox metadata and the new hierarchy can be incompatible, and a kubelet restart may not resolve it. Cordon and drain the node, then replace or reinstall it with the intended driver through your provisioning workflow.

Pods are running but memory use or OOM behavior changed

  • Verify that the pod actually has a memory limit and that the application sees that limit from inside its container.
  • Check Node.js versions, JVM builds, and libraries that infer limits from cgroup files.
  • Inspect cgroup v2 memory files and agent logs for parse errors rather than assuming the scheduler is at fault.
  • For runtimes that cannot yet detect v2 limits, set an explicit heap or worker limit and plan an upgrade.

Metrics disappeared or show impossible values

Review cAdvisor and monitoring-agent versions, mount permissions, and the paths they expect. A v1 parser may look for files or controller directories that do not exist in v2. Compare the agent’s host view with systemd-cgls and the actual hierarchy before changing pod resource settings.

You cannot explain an attached control or performance change

Inspect systemd slices and scopes with systemd-cgls and systemd-cgtop. If eBPF-based controls or observability are involved, use bpftool cgroup list /sys/fs/cgroup/* and involve the component’s vendor with the exact kernel and runtime versions.

What Kubernetes version and cgroup v1 deprecation mean

cgroup v1 support is release-sensitive and deprecated. A Kubernetes project article dated October 6, 2026, states that kubelet version 1.35 defaults to refusing startup on cgroup v1 unless the failCgroupV1 setting is disabled. The article also discusses a temporary fallback and planned removal; those plans can change, so treat the target release’s official documentation as authoritative rather than assuming a future behavior.

Before upgrading, map every Linux node to its cgroup mode and confirm that the target kubelet release will start with that mode. A cluster that was valid on an earlier release can fail during an upgrade if an unconverted node remains on v1.

Managed Kubernetes and provider-operated nodes

In a managed Kubernetes service, the provider may control the node image, runtime, and kubelet flags. Ask for the provider’s cgroup v2 adoption plan, supported Kubernetes versions, node-pool replacement process, and any workload or agent action required from you. Do not apply self-managed kubelet instructions to provider-owned nodes unless the service documentation explicitly permits it.

Your responsibility usually remains at the workload layer: update images and agents that parse cgroup files, test memory detection, and monitor for regressions during the provider’s node rollout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pre-upgrade checklist

  • Every target node runs a supported Linux distribution and kernel 5.8 or later.
  • stat -fc %T /sys/fs/cgroup/ confirms the intended cgroup mode.
  • The container runtime meets the version guidance and uses the same driver as kubelet.
  • Kubeadm or other provisioning automation sets systemd consistently.
  • cAdvisor, monitoring, security, and host agents have documented cgroup v2 support.
  • Java, Node.js, Go, and other resource-aware runtimes are tested at their exact image versions.
  • Node replacement, drain, rollback, and capacity procedures are rehearsed.
  • Post-migration checks cover pod readiness, sandbox creation, memory pressure, metrics, and application limits.
  • The target Kubernetes release’s current cgroup v1 policy has been reviewed, especially for version 1.35 and later.
