There is no fixed parachute count that works for every Kerbal Space Program craft. Choose enough main-chute drag to reach a safe touchdown speed after accounting for the craft’s mass, shape, descent speed, destination atmosphere and deployment settings. Remove unneeded stages where practical, and test the actual craft at its destination; a number picked without those details is only a guess.

Why parachute count is not a simple mass rating

A parachute is not destroyed merely because a craft is heavy. In a stock-game explanation, Snark, a Lead Moderator on the Kerbal Space Program Forums, puts the distinction this way: “What kills the parachute isn’t load. It’s airspeed.” That forum discussion describes parachute failure as a consequence of excessive airspeed, while a craft with too little total drag may still descend too quickly to land safely. This is an explanation of stock KSP behavior, not a rule for real-world parachutes.

Mass still matters because the craft has to slow down. Its shape and speed through the atmosphere also affect drag, and an atmosphere’s conditions matter: the same chute setup may behave differently at different destinations. So “how much mass can one chute carry?” is not enough information to determine a count.

What determines how many chutes your craft needs?

  • Mass at landing: Count the craft as it will descend, not just its payload. If you can discard tanks or an engine before atmospheric descent, the reduced mass and changed shape can help lower terminal speed; this is the approach recommended for the example craft in the forum discussion.
  • Shape and descent speed: A fast, poorly slowed craft needs a different descent plan from a compact craft that has already lost speed. Chutes do not cancel out a dangerous approach speed instantly.
  • Destination atmosphere: Atmospheric drag depends on air conditions and part shape. Do not assume a count tested in one atmosphere will produce the same result elsewhere. The community wiki’s atmosphere overview provides context on atmospheric conditions.
  • Deployment settings: Staging arms the chute; pressure and speed govern semi-deployment, while the configured altitude controls full deployment. The kRPC stock-parachute API documentation lists corresponding properties, including minimum semi-deployment pressure and full-deployment altitude.
  • Landing-speed requirement: The question is whether the complete setup slows the craft enough for the landing you need, not whether each individual chute remains attached.

How main chutes and drogues differ

Think of drogues as a way to manage speed earlier in a descent, not as a substitute for enough main-chute drag at touchdown. The forum explanation describes drogues as able to begin slowing a fast craft earlier and tolerate higher speeds, but warns that their fully deployed drag is too low to rely on for a gentle landing by themselves.

Chute type Role in descent Landing use
Main or standard chute Provides the principal drag for slowing the craft toward a safe landing speed once its deployment conditions are met. Use enough main-chute drag for the craft to reach the desired touchdown speed.
Drogue Can start contributing drag earlier and is described in the forum discussion as tolerating higher speeds. Do not rely on a drogue alone for a gentle landing; its fully deployed drag is described as too low for that role.

Understand when a chute actually opens

Staging arms a parachute; it does not mean the canopy immediately provides full drag. Pressure and speed affect semi-deployment, and the parachute’s configured altitude determines full deployment. If a chute does not open when expected, inspect its settings and the craft’s conditions rather than assuming the part has a simple mass limit.

In a 2021 Kerbal Space Program Forums discussion, Snark reported default values of 0.04 atmospheres for a standard chute’s minimum pressure and 1,000 m for its full-deployment altitude, with different defaults for the Mk12-R drogue. Treat these as forum-reported defaults, not guarantees for every game version, mod setup or player-adjusted setting. The kRPC API documents the corresponding adjustable or inspectable stock-parachute properties, but does not provide a universal sizing chart.

A practical way to choose and verify a setup

  1. Plan for the landing configuration. Identify which parts will still be attached during descent, and discard tanks or an engine beforehand if the mission allows it.
  2. Check your deployment settings. Confirm the chute is armed and review its pressure, speed and full-deployment altitude conditions. Account for any changes you have made from defaults.
  3. Use drogues if speed management calls for them. They can contribute drag earlier, but plan on main chutes to provide the drag needed for the landing.
  4. Test the actual craft at the intended destination. Reproduce the planned descent as closely as possible and check whether the craft slows enough before touchdown. A test at a different destination or with a different payload does not establish the count for this landing.
  5. Adjust and repeat. If the craft descends too quickly, reduce landing mass where possible or add main-chute drag, then test again. For heavy payloads or thin atmospheres, do not treat a result from an easier landing profile as proof that the setup is safe.

Why there is no reliable universal count chart

The available mechanics explanations and API documentation do not establish a verified table that maps craft mass to parachute count across destinations. A chart that gives one count for a mass range would leave out the conditions that determine whether the craft opens its chutes safely and slows sufficiently. For a useful answer, test the specific craft, destination and landing profile together.
