Kroger plans to eliminate approximately 3,000 corporate jobs over the next three years, according to an internal memo from CEO Greg Foran reported by Grocery Dive on Oct. 12, 2026. The report says the company will begin communicating decisions about affected roles in the coming months, but it does not identify departments, locations, specific notification dates, or severance terms.

What Kroger has announced

The reported reduction covers approximately 3,000 corporate jobs over a three-year period. The figure and timing come from an internal memo Kroger shared with Grocery Dive; a full public text of the memo or a company-hosted announcement was not available in the cited report. The plan is therefore a reported future reduction, not confirmation that 3,000 positions have already been eliminated.

Foran said decisions about impacted roles would be communicated starting in the coming months. The report provides no more specific schedule.

Which Kroger employees are affected?

The memo, as described in the report, identifies corporate jobs but does not name affected departments, individual roles, or locations. It also does not say whether any particular corporate function is included or excluded. The report does not establish that store employees are affected by this plan.

Severance arrangements are not specified in the reported memo excerpt. Employees should not assume terms or eligibility from the information currently published.

Why is Kroger cutting corporate jobs?

Foran described the company as having “more layers, more handoffs and more overhead than we need.” He also pointed to technology that could improve efficiency and reduce duplicated work. The stated direction is to move resources closer to customers, lower prices, invest in associates, and improve the shopping experience.

Foran characterized the intended organizational changes as creating “broader roles and faster decision making.” Those are the rationale and aims stated in the memo; the report does not quantify expected savings or establish outcomes from the plan.

How this differs from Kroger’s 2025 administrative cuts

Kroger’s FY2025 Form 10-K describes a separate reduction approved and implemented in the second quarter of 2025. The filing says the company reduced its corporate administrative team by nearly 1,000 associates and recorded $47 million in severance and related benefit costs. Kroger said that reorganization was intended to improve efficiency and reduce administrative costs so funds could be reinvested in retail.

Measure 2025 reduction Reported 2026 plan
Approximate headcount Nearly 1,000 corporate administrative associates, according to Kroger’s FY2025 Form 10-K. Approximately 3,000 corporate jobs, according to Grocery Dive’s Oct. 12, 2026 report.
Status Approved and implemented in Q2 2025, according to the filing. Planned over the next three years; not reported as completed.
Timing disclosed Q2 2025 implementation. Role decisions to be communicated starting in the coming months; no specific schedule reported.
Stated rationale Improve efficiency and reduce administrative costs, according to the filing. Reduce excess layers, handoffs, overhead, and duplicated work, according to Foran’s memo as reported.
What savings support The filing says savings would allow reinvestment in retail. A message by then-CEO Ron Sargent reproduced in an employee Reddit post in August 2025 mentioned lower prices, more store-team hours, new-store growth, and real-estate capabilities. The reported memo frames the shift as moving resources closer to customers, lowering prices, investing in associates, and improving the shopping experience. Specific realized outcomes are not established.

The 2025 message is reproduced in an employee Reddit post, rather than a Kroger-hosted source. Its description of the earlier savings does not guarantee the same uses or results for the 2026 plan.
