To cancel a Kraken Futures order, open the order in Open Orders (or Conditional Orders for stop-loss and take-profit orders), then use its cancel control. A cancellation affects only the unfilled remainder; contracts that already filled remain filled. If cancellation is unavailable, first check the order’s current state and Kraken’s trading mode.

The sections below explain cancellation, editing, partial fills, order instructions, platform restrictions and the error messages that most often cause confusion, based on Kraken’s current derivatives documentation.

How do I cancel an open Kraken Futures order?

Kraken’s single-collateral derivatives interface provides cancellation and editing controls for unfilled and partially filled open orders. The documented labels are Open Orders for ordinary limit orders and Conditional Orders for stop-loss and take-profit orders. Interface labels can vary by product or app version, so verify the order details shown on your screen. Kraken’s procedure is described in its single-collateral derivatives trading guide.

  1. Open the derivatives trading screen and locate the order in Open Orders. For a stop-loss or take-profit order that has not triggered, open Conditional Orders instead.
  2. Confirm the instrument, side, quantity, price and current state. This prevents cancelling a similarly named order on another contract.
  3. Select the cancel control beside that order.
  4. Refresh or recheck the order list, fills and order history. Do not assume the request succeeded merely because the control was clicked; an edit or cancellation can race with an execution or a state change.

When to use Cancel All

Cancel All is intended to remove all displayed open orders, not just the one you are investigating. Use it only when cancelling every applicable open order is deliberate. Check both ordinary and conditional-order views if the interface presents them separately.

Can I edit instead of cancelling?

Kraken documents editing price or quantity on an unfilled or partially filled open order. Changing the order type or trigger signal requires cancelling the existing order and submitting a new one. A price adjustment can immediately execute or be rejected, so inspect the resulting order state rather than treating an edit as a harmless change to the ticket.

What does cancellation change—and what does it not change?

Cancellation removes the quantity that is still resting or otherwise eligible to execute. It does not undo contracts that matched before the cancellation reached the matching system. For a partially filled order, the filled quantity remains part of the position or trade history; only the remaining open quantity can be cancelled. Review fills and order history to establish exactly what happened.

A cancellation request can also arrive after another event has already changed the order. The order may have filled, been cancelled by an instruction such as IOC, or been rejected by a platform rule. That is why the resulting state and fill records are more informative than the success or failure of a single click.

Why was my Kraken Futures order only partially filled?

A market order seeks immediate execution against available liquidity and can trade at several successive prices. Kraken states that its market-order protection will not match above the best ask by more than 1% or below the best bid by more than 1%, according to its order-types documentation updated October 1, 2026. If there is not enough quantity available inside that boundary, the order can fill partially (or not at all), and the unfilled remainder is cancelled instead of resting on the book. The 1% figure is a price collar, not a promise of a particular execution price or fill percentage.

For example, if only part of a requested market quantity is available at prices within Kraken’s permitted collar, that available part can execute while the rest is cancelled. Check the fills view for the executed contracts and the order record for the disposition of the remainder.

Market orders versus limit orders

Characteristic Market order Limit order
Primary intent Seek execution immediately against available liquidity. Execute only at the specified limit price or better.
Price control No fixed limit price; Kraken applies a documented 1% collar from the best ask or bid. Price is controlled by the limit, subject to Kraken’s checks.
Liquidity dependence Can consume several price levels and still have an unfilled remainder. If no matching liquidity is available at the limit or better, it can rest on the order book.
Remainder behavior Unfilled quantity is cancelled rather than left on the book under the documented market-order behavior. Normally remains open until filled, cancelled, rejected or otherwise removed by a rule or instruction.
Crossing-price restriction Immediate execution is bounded by the market collar. A limit price crossing the spread and outside Kraken’s 20% mark-price collar is rejected, according to the October 1, 2026 documentation.

Kraken also states that margin is required when a limit order is placed. Open limit orders can be cancelled if portfolio value falls below the initial-margin requirement. Those are documented causes of rejection or automatic cancellation, not an exhaustive list of every possible account or instrument rule.

Why did my post-only order get cancelled?

Post-only (maker-only)

Post-only requires the limit order to add liquidity rather than take liquidity immediately. If its price would match an order already available on the opposite side, Kraken rejects and cancels it instead of allowing an immediate execution. The derivatives error reference labels this condition POST_WOULD_EXECUTE. A post-only cancellation therefore usually means the price would have crossed the current spread; it does not mean an earlier fill was reversed.

Immediate-or-cancel (IOC)

IOC has the opposite operational goal: execute whatever quantity is available immediately and cancel the rest. Kraken’s documentation states: "An immediate-or-cancel order will execute at the price and quantity available – the remainder of the order will be cancelled and will not enter the book." If no quantity can execute immediately, the order can be rejected or cancelled; the error reference calls the incompatible condition IOC_WOULD_ENTER_BOOK.

Reduce-only

A reduce-only order may only decrease an existing position. Kraken says an oversized reduce-only order can be automatically reduced to the open-position size. Direction and size constraints can still make an order invalid; the error reference uses VIOLATES_REDUCE_ONLY when the requested action would violate those constraints. Trigger-order acceptance rules can differ from ordinary limit or market orders, so evaluate the exact order type rather than assuming every reduce-only ticket behaves identically.

Stop and trigger orders

Stop and other trigger orders are not shown in the order book until their trigger condition is met, according to Kraken’s other-order-options documentation. After triggering, normal margin and price-collar checks can apply, and the resulting order can be rejected if a check fails. Before a trigger, look in Conditional Orders when you need to cancel it.

Paired stop-loss and take-profit orders

Kraken’s bracket-order documentation describes these paired triggers as one-cancels-the-other (OCO): when either trigger fires, the other is automatically cancelled. This behavior is documented in Kraken’s derivatives order-types article. An automatic OCO cancellation is expected coordination between the two legs, not a platform error.

Does editing an order change its queue position?

Yes, the documented behavior depends on what you change. Reducing quantity keeps the order in its existing price-time queue position. Changing the price or increasing quantity sends the order to the back of priority at that price. A price change can also make the order immediately executable or cause it to fail a collar or other validation check. If retaining queue priority matters, a quantity reduction is treated differently from a price change or size increase.

Why can’t I cancel an order during maintenance?

Kraken uses trading modes that apply platform-wide restrictions. The relevant consequences are listed in its trading-modes documentation, updated October 7, 2026.

Trading mode Can submit new orders? Can cancel open orders? Does matching occur? Order-type limitation
Online Yes, subject to normal rules. Yes, subject to normal rules. Yes. None stated by the mode itself.
Cancel Only No. Yes. No. Kraken describes it as: "Pending (open) orders can be cancelled but new orders cannot be placed."
Maintenance No. No. No. Both entry and cancellation are blocked while maintenance restrictions apply.
Post Only Only post-only limit orders. Yes. No. Other order submissions are not permitted by the mode.
Limit Only Limit orders only; market orders are rejected. Yes. No. Market-order submission is blocked.

If cancellation is unavailable, check the current mode through Kraken’s REST SystemStatus, WebSocket status messages, the status API, Kraken’s status page, the trading page or Kraken Pro mobile app. The live mode can change, so a status shown earlier is not proof of the current state. During Cancel Only, retrying a cancellation is appropriate; during Maintenance, the platform intentionally blocks cancellation until the restriction is lifted.

What does “order for cancellation not found” mean?

The official derivatives error reference defines ORDER_FOR_CANCELLATION_NOT_FOUND as an order ID that could not be found in the account’s open orders. The message alone does not tell you whether the order filled, was already cancelled, expired under an instruction, or changed state for another reason.

  1. Copy the exact order ID from the error or request.
  2. Look in Open Orders and Conditional Orders, depending on the order type.
  3. Check fills and order history for a fill, prior cancellation or rejection.
  4. Confirm that you are viewing the same account, contract and environment in which the order was created.
  5. Only retry a cancellation if the order still appears as open. If it no longer appears, the records—not repeated cancellation attempts—determine what happened.

Other documented messages provide more specific clues: POST_WOULD_EXECUTE means a post-only order would take liquidity immediately; IOC_WOULD_ENTER_BOOK means an IOC order could not execute immediately without resting; and VIOLATES_REDUCE_ONLY means the request conflicts with reduce-only position rules. Definitions are maintained in Kraken’s derivatives interface error reference.

A practical check before and after cancelling

  • Identify whether the ticket is an ordinary open order or an untriggered conditional order.
  • Read the current quantity and filled quantity before acting.
  • Use the single-order cancel control unless cancelling every displayed open order is intentional.
  • After the request, verify the order state, fills and history.
  • If the action is blocked, check the trading mode and any order-specific instruction such as post-only, IOC, reduce-only or OCO.
  • Remember that a platform error describes the failed request, not necessarily the final account outcome; the order and fill records are authoritative for that account.
