To implement scheduled app blocks in Kotlin, make the schedule’s weekday mapping and time-boundary rules explicit, then evaluate the current state at each start or end boundary. A collected coroutine Flow with cancellable delay can keep an active app’s state current; it is not a device alarm and will not keep working after its collector or process stops. For actions that must happen outside the app’s lifetime, consider Android system scheduling instead.

Define the schedule rules before writing the evaluator

A day bitmask is a compact way to record which weekdays can start a schedule. Kotlin and Android do not prescribe a particular weekday-to-bit mapping or storage format, so choose one stable convention and use it consistently when saving, loading, editing, and evaluating schedules.

For example, assign Monday to bit 0 through Sunday to bit 6. A schedule containing Monday, Wednesday, and Friday then has bits 0, 2, and 4 set. Treat the mask as policy data: document the mapping, and test that each weekday maps to the intended bit. Do not assume another component uses the same convention unless you have confirmed it.

Evaluate normal and overnight windows

For a window whose start time is earlier than its end time, the selected day controls whether the block is active between those times. An overnight window needs a different check: when the current time is after the start, use today as the selected start day; when it is before the end, use yesterday as the selected start day. This makes the early-morning portion belong to the day on which the window began.

Choose endpoint semantics explicitly. The example below uses a start-inclusive, end-exclusive interval: the block is active at the start instant and inactive at the end instant. It also treats equal start and end times as an empty window rather than a full-day block. Those are application rules, not platform requirements.

data class ScheduleWindow(
    val dayMask: Int,
    val start: LocalTime,
    val end: LocalTime,
)

fun isActive(
    window: ScheduleWindow,
    now: LocalDateTime,
): Boolean {
    val time = now.toLocalTime()
    val todayBit = 1 shl (now.dayOfWeek.value - 1) // Monday = bit 0

    if (window.start == window.end) return false

    return if (window.start < window.end) {
        (window.dayMask and todayBit) != 0 &&
            time >= window.start && time < window.end
    } else {
        val yesterday = now.toLocalDate().minusDays(1)
        val yesterdayBit = 1 shl (yesterday.dayOfWeek.value - 1)
        (time >= window.start && (window.dayMask and todayBit) != 0) ||
            (time < window.end && (window.dayMask and yesterdayBit) != 0)
    }
}

This example uses java.time date and time types and ISO weekday numbering, where Monday has value 1. It evaluates local date-time values; if schedules must follow a chosen time zone through daylight-saving or time-zone changes, define that policy separately and test the relevant transitions. The platform guidance does not decide how those application-specific cases should behave.

Make a Flow wait for the next boundary

Kotlin describes Flow as an asynchronous stream. A cold Flow starts its upstream work when collected, and each collector starts a separate upstream run. A schedule-state Flow should therefore be owned by a lifecycle that matches the need for updates; it does not run merely because it has been declared.

A boundary-driven flow can emit the current state, calculate the next schedule boundary, suspend until then, and reevaluate. Recomputing after waking is important: a delay is a minimum wait, not a guarantee that the coroutine resumes at the exact instant requested. The API reference for kotlinx.coroutines 1.11.0 says delay waits at least the requested duration without blocking a thread, and that it is cancellable. Kotlin delay API reference.

Schedule and nextBoundaryAfter here represent your schedule model and boundary calculation; they are not standard Kotlin APIs. The boundary calculation should consider every enabled start and end, including overnight windows, and return the next future boundary. Reevaluate against the clock after each delay instead of assuming the requested delay exactly matches wall-clock time.

Collect the flow in a lifecycle-appropriate coroutine scope and cancel that scope when updates are no longer needed. Since each collector of a cold Flow starts separate upstream work, multiple collectors can create multiple timing loops; share the resulting state if several consumers need the same updates.

Choose timing based on how long the action must survive

A coroutine delay is appropriate when the app’s process and collector are expected to remain active and modest lateness is acceptable. It suspends without blocking a thread, but it is not a mechanism for waking a sleeping device or running after the app process ends.

Android’s AlarmManager is designed for time-based operations outside the lifetime of an application, including while the device sleeps. Android recommends inexact alarms for most cases; exact alarms are for genuinely precise, user-facing behavior and have access requirements and battery trade-offs. Use a system-level mechanism when the action must outlast the process, and choose based on the job’s actual timing and background-execution requirements.

Android AlarmManager No; alarms operate outside app lifetime Can perform time-based operations while the device sleeps; most cases should use inexact alarms, with exact alarms reserved for qualifying precision needs Alarms are cleared on reboot and need to be restored for persistent schedules; exact-alarm access requirements apply

Android’s alarm overview explains the distinction between app-lifetime timing and alarms: Schedule alarms. The AlarmManager reference documents alarm behavior and constraints: AlarmManager.

Use the right clock and restore schedules after reboot

Decide whether the schedule represents a wall-clock time of day or an elapsed duration. For a block that starts at 9:00 a.m. local time, wall-clock semantics are the natural fit; for “in 30 minutes,” elapsed-time semantics are generally appropriate. Android alarm APIs distinguish real-time clock alarms from elapsed-time alarms. Kotlin also notes that Android’s System.nanoTime() does not count time spent in deep sleep, so it should not be treated as a wall clock or a sleep-inclusive duration source.

Alarms are cleared when the device reboots. If a persistent schedule uses AlarmManager, restore and reschedule its alarms after reboot, and account for any exact-alarm access requirements that apply. Android documents alarm types and timing semantics in its AlarmManager reference; Kotlin’s time guidance covers monotonic and wall-clock measurement, including Android deep sleep: Time measurement.

Test the boundaries and calendar rules

Test the evaluator independently from the timer. Use fixed dates and times so each assertion verifies a policy choice rather than relying on when a test happens to run.

  • Verify the selected bit for every weekday, plus a mask with several enabled days.
  • For a daytime window, check just before the start, exactly at the start, just before the end, and exactly at the end.
  • For an overnight window, check the selected start day’s evening and the following morning; also check that the morning is inactive when the prior day was not selected.
  • Verify that equal start and end times follow the chosen rule.
  • Test an empty mask and any invalid or unsupported schedule values your app permits.
  • Test time-zone and daylight-saving transitions if schedules are meant to follow local civil time.
  • For a collected Flow, verify initial emission, waking and reevaluation at boundaries, cancellation, and behavior when the clock changes while it is waiting.
  • For system alarms, verify reboot restoration and the app’s behavior when exact-alarm access is unavailable or no longer granted.
