Kola reached farther into continental rock than any of the ocean-drilling records listed here reached below the seafloor. But ocean drilling works through a water column first, and its deepest water-depth record is not a drilling-depth record. Kola is one exceptionally deep borehole; ocean programs are multi-platform efforts that have sampled many sites. Those differences matter more than a single “deepest” ranking.
What “deepest” means in each setting
The Kola Superdeep Borehole was drilled on land into continental crust. Its depth is reported as the final depth of a borehole. Ocean drilling starts from a ship above the seabed, passes through seawater, and then penetrates sediment or rock beneath the seafloor. For ocean projects, water depth and hole penetration are separate measurements.
Water depth describes the water column between the sea surface and seafloor. Hole penetration describes how far a borehole extends below the seafloor. A site in deep water can therefore have a large water-depth figure even when the borehole itself penetrates a much shorter distance into the seabed. Neither measurement should be substituted for the other.
There is a second scope issue: a record for one ship or hole is not automatically the record for an entire drilling program. Program-wide statistics may combine different vessels, platforms, expeditions, and years. Any meaningful comparison needs to name both the measurement and the unit being compared.

These distinctions help explain why two numbers that both appear under “deepest” may describe different things. A land borehole’s final depth describes the borehole reached at its site. An ocean-drilling report can instead give the water depth at a site, the distance drilled below the seabed, or the deepest penetration achieved by a program over a defined period. Before ranking figures, ask where the measurement starts and what entity it describes.
How the headline records compare
| Record or program | Penetration below land surface or seafloor | Water depth | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kola Superdeep Borehole, KSDB-3 | 12,261 m final depth | Not applicable | One continental borehole; the DFG SPP ICDP project listing reports this final depth. |
| Ocean Drilling Program (1985–2003) | 2,111 m, Hole 504B | Not stated in the cited program table | Deepest hole penetration reported for this program era. |
| Integrated IODP (2003–2013) | 3,059 m | Not stated in the cited program table | Program-era maximum; IODP operator statistics attribute the corresponding record to Chikyu, not to JOIDES Resolution. |
| International IODP (2013–2024) | 1,806 m | 8,023 m | Separate program-wide maxima for hole penetration and water depth; the totals span JOIDES Resolution, Chikyu, and mission-specific platforms. |
| JOIDES Resolution, Expedition 317 | 1,928 m | Not stated for this record | The ship FAQ’s deepest seafloor hole, a ship-specific record. |
| JOIDES Resolution, Expedition 329 | Not stated for this record | 5,707 m | The deepest water depth the ship FAQ says the vessel reached; this is not penetration into the seafloor. |
The Kola figure above follows the DFG SPP ICDP project listing, which gives KSDB-3 a final depth of 12,261 m. Other accounts commonly give 12,262 m; that one-metre difference should not be silently blended into the listing’s figure. The ocean values are likewise tied to the specific program period or ship record shown, rather than presented as interchangeable all-time measurements.
The table also shows why a single “ocean drilling record” can be misleading without a label. Hole 504B’s 2,111 m belongs to the ODP period, the 3,059 m maximum belongs to Integrated IODP, and the 1,806 m maximum belongs to International IODP. The 8,023 m entry is a different kind of measurement altogether: water above the seafloor. These figures answer separate questions and should not be collapsed into a single ocean-depth total.
What Kola passed through
Kola’s significance is not only that its borehole reached 12,261 m. The project listing describes a geological traverse through two major parts of the continental crust at the site. From 0 to 6,842 m, the main borehole intersected the Lower Proterozoic Pechenga sedimentary-volcanic sequence. From 6,842 to 12,261 m, it entered a substantial part of the Archean granitic-metamorphic basement.
The listing names gneisses, amphibolites, migmatites, and granitoids among the basement rocks. In other words, the borehole moved from a sedimentary-volcanic sequence into older crystalline basement. That succession gives the depth number geological meaning: Kola provided access to a deep section of continental formations at one location, rather than simply setting a record on a gauge.
The boundary at 6,842 m is useful as a guide to the described rock sequence, but it does not turn Kola into a complete survey of continental crust. A deep borehole samples a narrow path through rock at a particular site. Its value lies in the direct observations and recovered material from that path, interpreted in the context of the regional geology.
The wording of the DFG SPP ICDP project description is specific about both intervals: it says the main borehole intersected the entire Pechenga Formation sequence from 0 to 6,842 m and a “considerable part” of the Archean basement from 6,842 to 12,261 m. That distinction matters. It supports saying the hole crossed the described sedimentary-volcanic sequence and continued into basement; it does not support describing the hole as having passed through all continental crust or all of the basement.
Kola is therefore best understood as an unusually deep, concentrated sample rather than a map of the whole continent. Its rock sequence is evidence from a particular borehole and setting. The project’s exceptional depth makes that vertical view notable, while its single-site character places a clear limit on how broadly the observations can be generalized.

How ocean-drilling records changed by program era
Ocean drilling’s record depends on which program period is being discussed. IODP’s historical statistics report different deepest penetrations for the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP), Integrated IODP, and International IODP. These are not three measurements of a single ship under identical conditions; they are program-era totals assembled across different platforms and scientific campaigns.
ODP: 2,111 m below the seafloor
For ODP, covering 1985–2003, the cited program table reports 2,111 m as the deepest hole penetration, at Hole 504B. The operator’s record also identifies Hole 504B as the ODP penetration record. This number is measured into the seabed, not from the ocean surface.
Integrated IODP: 3,059 m below the seafloor
For Integrated IODP, covering 2003–2013, the program table reports a maximum hole penetration of 3,059 m. IODP’s operator statistics attribute the corresponding record to Chikyu. It should therefore not be labeled a JOIDES Resolution record simply because that vessel is familiar from ocean-drilling coverage.
International IODP: 1,806 m of penetration and 8,023 m of water
For International IODP, covering 2013–2024, the reported deepest hole penetration is 1,806 m, while the deepest water depth is 8,023 m. The water-depth figure describes how far below the sea surface the seafloor was at the site; it does not mean the drill bit continued 8,023 m into the seabed. This program’s statistics span JOIDES Resolution, Chikyu, and mission-specific platforms.
The sequence of reported program maxima is not a simple upward ladder. The figures are tied to different program periods and platforms, and the statistics provided do not give a reason for the differences between their deepest penetrations. They should be read as records for their labeled eras, not as evidence on their own that one period’s science, equipment, or priorities were superior to another’s.
The 2013–2024 program totals also show why a single hole maximum is an incomplete summary of ocean drilling. The program reports 748 holes drilled and 18,054 cores recovered across its platforms. Those are program-wide counts, not totals from one ship or one expedition. The record penetration describes the deepest individual hole; the counts describe the breadth of the program’s sampling activity.
Those totals provide a different scale of comparison from Kola’s one borehole. They indicate that International IODP involved a portfolio of holes and recovered cores across several kinds of platforms. They do not mean that every hole reached the same depth, that every core represents the same kind of material, or that a larger count is a direct measure of scientific impact. The figures answer a question about the volume and distribution of program activity, not the relative importance of individual discoveries.

The JOIDES Resolution FAQ gives two figures that are easy to misread if their labels are omitted. Expedition 317 is the ship’s deepest seafloor hole at 1,928 m of penetration. Expedition 329 reached a water depth of 5,707 m, which describes the depth of the seafloor below the ocean surface, not a 5,707 m hole.

Neither figure conflicts with the 3,059 m Integrated IODP maximum. The 1,928 m figure is specific to the JOIDES Resolution; the 3,059 m figure is a program-era maximum that includes Chikyu. A ship’s record answers “How deep did this vessel drill?” A program’s record answers “What was the deepest penetration across the platforms counted in this era?”
Site selection is also broader than choosing the location with the greatest water depth. The JOIDES Resolution FAQ addresses how drilling locations are decided; the central practical point for interpreting records is that a scientific program is organized around research sites and expeditions, not a single attempt to maximize penetration. The available record figures do not establish that a deeper site is inherently more scientifically valuable.
For readers comparing claims, Expedition 317 and Expedition 329 are useful because they demonstrate the two axes within one vessel’s own FAQ: one is a penetration measurement and one is a water-depth measurement. They are not competing records. It would be incorrect to subtract one from the other, add them together as a single hole depth, or compare the 5,707 m water figure directly with Kola’s final borehole depth.

What the two approaches reveal—and what they do not
Kola: a deep, concentrated view of continental crust
Kola’s borehole offers a long, continuous depth interval through continental formations at one location, as described by the project listing. It makes possible a focused account of the transition from the Pechenga sequence into granitic-metamorphic basement. The principal strength of this kind of project is depth within a single continental setting.
That concentration also defines its limits. One borehole cannot stand in for every continental region, and the maximum depth alone does not quantify the scientific impact of the project. The figure tells readers how far the hole reached; the mapped rock sequence tells them what kinds of formations it encountered.
Ocean drilling: distributed sampling across marine settings
Scientific ocean drilling samples sediment and rock at many geographically distributed sites. Its evidence includes cores and drilling records from expeditions, and program totals illustrate the scale of that activity. The 748 holes and 18,054 cores reported for International IODP from 2013 to 2024 describe a portfolio of sampling across platforms, not a single deep borehole.
Ocean drilling can address settings that a land borehole cannot: marine sediments and oceanic crust beneath the seafloor. A December 2015 JOIDES Resolution explainer described a 3.06 km scientific ocean hole drilled by Chikyu and distinguished hard oceanic crust from sediments. That is a dated explainer about that drilling achievement, not a current program-wide record; the record should be read with its program era and platform attached.

Distributed sampling provides a different kind of coverage from Kola’s deep traverse. It can compare material collected at multiple sites and across different marine environments. But the number of holes or cores does not by itself measure the quality or importance of a scientific result, any more than maximum penetration does.

The distinction is not simply “one hole versus many.” It is also a distinction between evidence organized around a deep vertical interval at one continental site and evidence collected through separate ocean expeditions and sites. Kola’s listed formations support a specific account of the rocks encountered along that borehole. The ocean program totals establish broad activity across marine settings, while a particular hole record identifies a single penetration. Each type of evidence has a different scale and answers a different geological question.
Why these records are not a simple contest
If the question is strictly “Which reported penetration is greater?”, Kola’s 12,261 m final depth exceeds the ocean program penetrations listed here. That is a comparison of the quoted depth figures, not proof that Kola sampled more of Earth overall or produced greater scientific impact. The settings, sampling patterns, and program scopes differ too much for maximum depth alone to settle those questions.
A fair comparison keeps four labels visible:
- Setting: continental formations beneath land at Kola, versus marine sediment and oceanic crust beneath the seafloor in ocean drilling.
- Reference point: Kola’s final borehole depth, ocean penetration below the seafloor, or water depth above it.
- Scope: one borehole, one ship, one expedition, or a program-era total across platforms.
- Evidence: the rock sequence and observations from a deep continental borehole, versus cores and drilling records gathered across ocean sites.
IODP’s statistics distinguish the program periods, and the JOIDES Resolution FAQ distinguishes the vessel’s own records. IODP also says its downloadable drilling-site maps were last updated with available data in September 2025. For the numeric records in this comparison, the program statistics remain the relevant source for the listed program-era figures; the map update date does not change the measurement definitions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat September 2025 date describes the available update to the downloadable maps, not a new drilling record or a revision to the listed maxima. It is useful context when consulting maps for site locations, but it does not change the period labels attached to the figures in the table. Keeping the source, period, and measurement together makes a record easier to verify and less likely to be repeated out of context.
How to read an ocean-drilling “deepest” claim
When a headline calls an ocean borehole the deepest, check the wording before comparing it with Kola or another project. A few labels will usually resolve the apparent contradiction:
- Identify the measurement. “Water depth” is the water column; “penetration” or “hole depth” is the distance drilled below the seafloor.
- Identify the scope. Determine whether the number belongs to a named ship, a particular expedition, or a program that used multiple platforms.
- Read the period. ODP (1985–2003), Integrated IODP (2003–2013), and International IODP (2013–2024) have different program maxima.
- Keep the source’s figure intact. For example, use 12,261 m when reporting the DFG SPP ICDP listing for Kola, and note the one-metre difference from the commonly repeated 12,262 m rather than merging them.
This method prevents the most common category error: comparing an ocean site’s total depth beneath the water surface with a land borehole’s penetration, or treating a multi-platform program record as a single vessel’s achievement.
It also avoids a subtler mistake: using a familiar vessel’s result as shorthand for an entire program. The JOIDES Resolution’s 1,928 m penetration on Expedition 317 is a real ship-specific record, but it does not replace the Integrated IODP program maximum of 3,059 m attributed to Chikyu. Conversely, the program-wide number should not be presented as something the JOIDES Resolution itself drilled. Record statements become clearer when the number travels with its subject.

Which question each record can answer
| If you want to know… | Use this figure or evidence | Do not infer… |
|---|---|---|
| How far did the Kola borehole reach? | 12,261 m final depth in the DFG SPP ICDP listing for KSDB-3. | That the number is directly equivalent to water depth or to an ocean program total. |
| What was the deepest penetration in an ocean program era? | The period-labeled program table: 2,111 m for ODP, 3,059 m for Integrated IODP, or 1,806 m for International IODP. | That the figure belongs to the JOIDES Resolution in every period. |
| How deep was an ocean drilling site below the surface? | The water-depth figure, such as 8,023 m for International IODP (2013–2024). | That the borehole extended that far below the seafloor. |
| What did a project sample? | Kola’s described rock sequence, or ocean drilling’s cores and records from multiple sites. | That maximum depth alone measures scientific impact. |
The table is a quick guide to matching a reader’s question to the right kind of evidence. If the question is about the deepest water a vessel reached, use a water-depth record. If it is about the longest hole below the seabed, use penetration. If it is about the breadth of a drilling effort, program-wide hole and core totals are more relevant than the single deepest hole. None of those answers substitutes for the others.

The useful comparison
Kola and ocean drilling are complementary ways of investigating Earth. Kola pushed a single borehole deep into continental formations and documented a passage from the Pechenga sedimentary-volcanic sequence into Archean crystalline basement. Ocean-drilling programs worked at many marine sites, collecting cores from beneath the seafloor and recording both the water depth above a site and the penetration below it.
The depth records are worth comparing only after those distinctions are preserved. Kola is the deeper penetration in the figures discussed here; ocean drilling’s strength in this comparison is not a larger single-hole number but its distributed sampling across marine environments and platforms.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the deepest hole the JOIDES Resolution has drilled?
The JOIDES Resolution FAQ identifies Expedition 317 as the ship’s deepest seafloor hole, at 1,928 m of penetration. That is a ship-specific figure, not the same as a multi-platform IODP program maximum.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDoes the JOIDES Resolution’s 5,707 m record mean it drilled a 5,707 m hole?
No. The 5,707 m figure for Expedition 329 is the deepest water depth the ship says it reached: the depth of the seafloor below the sea surface. It is not penetration below the seafloor.
Why is the Integrated IODP maximum of 3,059 m different from the JOIDES Resolution record?
They describe different scopes. The 3,059 m maximum is for Integrated IODP (2003–2013), and IODP operator statistics attribute it to Chikyu. The JOIDES Resolution’s stated deepest hole is 1,928 m on Expedition 317.
How do they decide where the JOIDES Resolution will drill?
The JOIDES Resolution FAQ raises this question, but the record details summarized here do not specify the site-selection criteria. What the figures establish is that drilling is organized around research sites and expeditions, rather than a single effort to maximize water depth or penetration.
Is Kola’s depth 12,261 m or 12,262 m?
The DFG SPP ICDP project listing gives KSDB-3’s final depth as 12,261 m. Other accounts commonly use 12,262 m, so the figures should be attributed to their sources rather than silently combined.

Kola’s 12,261 m figure is a continental borehole’s final depth; ocean-drilling figures distinguish penetration below the seafloor from the water above it, and ship records from program-wide totals. Kola offers a deep view of continental formations at one site, while ocean programs build a distributed record from marine cores and multiple platforms. The records are complementary, not a single contest decided by the largest number.
