Kokura is not the documented setting of the first act of Jim Jarmusch’s Stranger Than Paradise. The section titled “The New World” was filmed around a New York apartment, with Eva’s arrival associated with 464 Newark St in Hoboken, New Jersey. The film then moves to Cleveland, Ohio, and finally Florida. Kokura is a historic district of Kitakyushu, Japan, with no documented production connection to this film in the available AFI, location, and interview records.
The short answer: Kokura is not in Stranger Than Paradise
The film sometimes appears in questions that mention “Kokura” or even “Stranger Than Heaven,” but the movie at issue is Stranger Than Paradise. Its first act, “The New World,” follows Eva arriving in the New York area and staying with Willie. Production documentation places the original short that became this act in a New York City apartment. A location listing identifies 464 Newark St in Hoboken, New Jersey, as the corner where Eva arrives and walks toward the apartment.
That distinction matters because Kokura is a real Japanese place, not a fictional name invented for the movie. It lies in central Kitakyushu on Kyushu, far from the American locations used by Jarmusch. Nothing in the cited production record, location listing, or contemporary cinematography interview documents Kokura as a filming site, story setting, or inspiration for the first act.

How the film’s geography is actually organized
Jarmusch expanded an earlier short into a three-part feature. Each section uses a different American environment, and the changes in place are part of the film’s structure rather than incidental background.

| The New World | Eva arrives and stays with Willie | New York apartment area; arrival associated with 464 Newark St, Hoboken, New Jersey | Compact urban interiors and the unsettled feeling of arrival |
| One Year Later | Willie and Eddie reunite with Eva | Cleveland, Ohio | Wintry, relatively desolate Midwestern surroundings |
| Paradise | The group drives toward an uncertain escape | Florida | Warmer, more open landscapes and a stark contrast with Cleveland |
AFI’s production record identifies the New York apartment as the place where the original short was filmed and describes the feature as three sections: “The New World,” “One Year Later” in Cleveland, and “Paradise” in Florida. Jarmusch later told American Cinematographer, “The second part of Stranger was shot on location in Cleveland and Florida.” In context, that statement confirms the production’s move away from the New York-area opening and toward the two later locations.
Where was the first act filmed?
The original apartment shoot
The first act grew out of the earlier short film. AFI’s production notes say that short was filmed in a New York City apartment and then became the opening section of the feature. That apartment setting supplies much of “The New World’s” claustrophobic rhythm: the characters meet, talk, wait, and occupy the same limited rooms while Eva adjusts to an unfamiliar place.
The record describes the setting at the city level as New York, while the commonly cited arrival location is across the Hudson in Hoboken. Those descriptions are not necessarily contradictory. A film can use a New York apartment for interiors or production purposes and an identifiable Hoboken street corner for an exterior arrival shot. The safest precise wording is that the first act is the New York/Hoboken portion of the film, not that every shot was made at one address.

The location listing places the corner where Eva first arrives and walks toward the apartment at 464 Newark St, Hoboken, New Jersey. This is the useful answer when someone asks for the street location of the opening arrival scene. It does not establish that the entire apartment sequence was filmed there, nor does it turn Hoboken into a stand-in for Kokura. It identifies a specific exterior associated with Eva’s entrance into Willie’s world.

Why the opening feels geographically vague
“The New World” is less interested in postcard views than in disorientation. The viewer receives fragments of streets, rooms, luggage, and conversation rather than a conventional travelogue. That approach can make the setting feel abstract or interchangeable, which may help explain why an unrelated place-name can become attached to the scene in informal descriptions. The documented locations are more specific: New York-area interiors and a Hoboken arrival point.
What happens in Cleveland?
The middle section, “One Year Later,” brings Willie and Eddie back together with Eva in Cleveland. AFI lists Cleveland as a geographic location, and the production interview identifies Cleveland among the places used for location shooting. The city supplies a colder, more exposed visual environment than the opening apartment.
In practical viewing terms, Cleveland is the film’s wintry middle chapter. The snow and subdued streets reinforce the characters’ stalled lives and the sense that their reunion is not a conventional homecoming. The location also broadens the film from a few rooms to a city whose weather and emptiness press on the characters. When identifying the sequence, say Cleveland rather than Kokura: the available production evidence is explicit about the Ohio city.

The third section is titled “Paradise,” and the characters drive to Florida. AFI identifies Florida as the setting for this final movement, while Jarmusch’s American Cinematographer interview confirms Florida location shooting. The warmer climate creates an immediate contrast with Cleveland’s winter.

Florida is not presented as a simple happy ending. Its heat, open roads, and altered light change the film’s texture without resolving the characters’ uncertainty. Geographically, however, the progression is clear: the New York/Hoboken opening leads to Cleveland, then to Florida. No step in that route passes through Kokura or Japan.
What Kokura is actually known for
Kokura is a historic area in central Kitakyushu, Japan. The Japan National Tourism Organization describes Kokura Castle as a major local landmark and says construction began in 1602. The area is also associated with the swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. Visitors can reach the castle area from both Kokura Station and Nishi-Kokura Station.
Those facts explain why Kokura may appear in a travel, history, or geography question, but they do not connect it to Jarmusch’s film. Kokura belongs to the cultural and historical geography of Kyushu; Stranger Than Paradise belongs to a deliberately American road-and-city geography. Treating the two as the same setting confuses a real Japanese destination with the locations documented for an independent American production.
Kokura and the film locations compared
| Comparison point | Stranger Than Paradise | Kokura |
|---|---|---|
| Narrative function | New York/Hoboken introduces Eva; Cleveland stages the reunion; Florida becomes the destination of the final act | Historic urban area and travel destination within Kitakyushu |
| Climate and visual texture | Urban apartment interiors, wintry Cleveland, then warm Florida | Japanese cityscape centered on the Kokura Castle area |
| Production status | Documented American filming locations in New York-area settings, Cleveland, and Florida | No documented connection to the film’s production or story |
| Geographic position | United States locations on the film’s east-to-south journey | Central Kitakyushu on Kyushu, Japan |
How Jarmusch’s location choices shape the film
Location shooting instead of a generic backdrop
Jarmusch has emphasized that shooting on location was important to the production. The places are not interchangeable scenery: the cramped opening, Cleveland’s cold streets, and Florida’s warmth each alter how the characters occupy space. The geographic progression gives the film its movement even when the plot remains deliberately spare.

Black-and-white photography and the wide-angle lens
Cinematographer Tom DiCillo said the desolation was heightened by black-and-white film and a wide-angle lens, according to the American Cinematographer account. Black-and-white strips away local color, while a wide-angle view can make rooms and streets feel simultaneously larger and more uncomfortable. That visual strategy may make the locations feel less like recognizable tourist sites, but it does not erase the production record identifying them.
A very small production scale
AFI’s 1984 production record gives the completed film’s cost as about $110,000. This is a historical production figure, not a current-dollar estimate or a statement about what a comparable film would cost today. The modest budget helps explain the reliance on practical locations and the film’s controlled, economical staging.

How to describe the setting accurately
If you are labeling a scene, writing a program note, or answering a trivia question, use the narrowest claim the evidence supports:
- Call the opening “The New World,” set in the New York area, with Eva’s arrival associated with Hoboken.
- Use 464 Newark St, Hoboken, for the documented arrival corner rather than calling it the address of every interior scene.
- Identify “One Year Later” with Cleveland, Ohio.
- Identify “Paradise” with Florida.
- Describe Kokura as a Kitakyushu, Japan, location known for Kokura Castle and its Miyamoto Musashi association, not as a film site.
The confusion is best understood as a place-name conflation or an incorrect premise, not as a hidden connection in the movie. The available records support a clear American route and a separate Japanese historical city.
