PHYSINT is not Metal Gear Solid 6. It is a new action-espionage IP from Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions, first announced with Sony Interactive Entertainment in January 2024 and now being developed with Xbox as its publishing partner. Kojima has promised “plenty of new ideas” and “a different kind of spy action,” making PHYSINT a spiritual successor in genre and authorship rather than an official sequel.
That distinction matters. Without Metal Gear characters, canon or title rights, PHYSINT gives Kojima room to rethink how stealth, missions, cinematic storytelling and the player’s role in espionage work. A cautious replay of Metal Gear’s familiar formulas would undermine the reason to create a new series at all.

What PHYSINT actually is
A new Kojima Productions original IP
Kojima Productions announced on January 31, 2024 that it was creating a “brand-new action-espionage game.” Kojima said preparations were underway and that full production would begin after Death Stranding 2. The studio described a project built with cutting-edge technology and a notable cast, intended to blur the boundary between film and games through near-life-like visuals.

It’s quite different.” That is the clearest indication that PHYSINT is meant to move beyond a simple Metal Gear substitute.

Why “spiritual successor” is the accurate label
PHYSINT occupies the action-espionage territory associated with Kojima’s Metal Gear work, but the official announcements do not identify it as a Metal Gear title. It has no announced Metal Gear characters, continuity or franchise branding. Calling it Metal Gear Solid 6 would therefore misstate its status.
The stronger interpretation is editorial rather than a confirmed feature list: a new IP lets Kojima change stealth systems, mission structures, cinematic presentation and the player’s responsibilities as an operative instead of preserving an established canon. Those possibilities follow from the project’s stated ambition, not from announced mechanics.
The partnership changed while the game remained in development
PHYSINT’s business context has shifted since its reveal. Sony was the partner named in the original January 2024 announcement. On September 10, 2026, Kojima Productions said its journey with PHYSINT continued with “Asha and the team at XBOX,” adding that development was continuing. Xbox Wire’s September 9 announcement said Xbox and Kojima Productions had expanded their partnership to publish the game.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said, “We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen XBOX to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS.” The same announcement describes cooperation extending to film and television. Neither announcement gives a reason for the change from the original Sony collaboration, so cancellation explanations and exclusivity claims should not be treated as established facts.

Why Metal Gear Solid cannot simply repeat itself
A new name creates different obligations
An established Metal Gear game can rely on recognizable characters, historical references and familiar stealth expectations. PHYSINT cannot. It must explain its world, define its spycraft and earn its emotional stakes without borrowing Metal Gear’s canon. That pressure is also its creative advantage: Kojima can make the player’s role, information flow and mission objectives serve a new idea of espionage.
Kojima is promising change, not a reskin
The phrase “a different kind of spy action” is deliberately broad. It does not confirm specific mechanics such as open-world traversal, social stealth, multiplayer or a particular camera system. It does establish a standard PHYSINT will be judged against: repeating the old formula would conflict with the project’s own brief. Kojima has described the game as part of his 40-year career and, in an Xbox announcement, said the team remains committed to redefining the action-espionage genre.

Cast and production status
On September 17, 2026, Kojima Productions identified Bill Skarsgård as PHYSINT’s lead. Charlee Fraser, Don Lee and Minami Hamabe were also announced as cast members. The studio calls PHYSINT its third original IP.

The closest way to experience Kojima-style espionage immediately is not PHYSINT but Konami’s remake of an existing game. Konami released METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER on August 27, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam.

Snake Eater returns players to Naked Snake’s Cold War mission and intentionally preserves the original game’s story and design. Konami also lists platform-specific bonus modes and said the FOX HUNT online mode would be added later in fall 2025. It is therefore a useful choice for the classic Metal Gear experience, while PHYSINT is the project to watch for a new interpretation of espionage.
Will PHYSINT be on Xbox or PlayStation?
Xbox is the only publishing partner explicitly identified in the September 2026 announcements. That does not, by itself, establish a final console or PC launch list. Sony was named in the 2024 announcement, but the later partnership announcement does not provide a release-platform specification or state that PlayStation support has been ruled out. Until Kojima Productions or Xbox publishes those details, treat both availability and timing as unconfirmed.
What players should expect next
- A release date and price have not been announced.
- Detailed stealth mechanics, mission structure and multiplayer features have not been announced.
- The final platform list has not been announced.
- The announced cast may expand as production continues.
- Additional information is expected as development progresses, but no timetable was supplied.
For now, PHYSINT’s importance is conceptual: Kojima is returning to espionage without returning to Metal Gear’s safety net. If the finished game follows through on its promise, its success will come from making spy action feel unfamiliar while retaining the cinematic ambition that defines its creator.
