Save your rubies until a live Pickup Summon matches a real roster or collection goal, then spend only after checking that event’s target, rates, milestones, currency rules and end date. There is no official universal “best” fighter or permanent ruby target. Your best decision depends on what your team lacks, which reward threshold you can actually reach and how long the event remains open.
Netmarble’s published notices also show why waiting can matter: summon rates may change by Fighter Summon Level, cumulative rewards reset when an event ends, and some events consume event tokens before rubies. Treat every banner as a separate contract rather than assuming that one event’s rules, costs or token order apply to the next.
The short answer: spend with a plan, not on a timer
Rubies have their highest value when they help you complete a defined objective. That might be adding a featured fighter your formation genuinely needs, reaching a cumulative reward you can afford, or pursuing a favorite character while accepting the collection cost. A random pull made because you reached a certain ruby balance is not a strategy by itself.

- What exact fighter or reward are you pursuing?
- Does the current Pickup Summon display that target, and at what visible rate?
- What summon count unlocks the reward that makes this event worthwhile?
- Can your rubies and any event tokens reach that count before the deadline?
- Would Premium Summon or a shop provide a more suitable route for the same roster goal?
If you cannot answer those questions from the live event screen, keep the rubies. Waiting is especially sensible when the current banner does not solve a clear team problem, when the milestone is out of reach, or when the event is close to ending and you cannot finish its reward track.
What the official summon rules actually establish
Ruby and event-token spending can be event-specific
In Netmarble’s official Halloween Pickup-Summon notice, CM ATHENA wrote: “Rubies or Halloween Fighter Tokens can be used to perform Pick-Up Summons.” That notice also specified that Halloween Fighter Tokens were consumed before rubies. This is a rule for that named event, not proof that every future banner will use Halloween tokens or the same spending order. Read the currency line on each event screen before confirming a summon.
Rates can depend on Fighter Summon Level
The same notice directs players to the event’s Rate Info panel and says fighter summon rates vary by summon level. Consequently, a rate quoted by another player, an old screenshot or a previous event may not describe your account. Open Rate Info at your current Fighter Summon Level and inspect the actual target’s entry before assigning value to a pull.
Cumulative rewards and schedules reset
Pickup events tie cumulative rewards to the number of summons made during that event. When the event ends, its reward opportunities and summon count reset. A partially completed track therefore has no automatic value in the next banner. Include the reset in your decision: a banner can be attractive in isolation but poor for you if you cannot reach its useful threshold before the closing time.

- Open the event notice from inside the game. Use the current Pickup Summon page, not a remembered cost or a community summary. Record the featured fighter, event name and displayed closing date and time.
- Open Rate Info. Check the rate for the featured fighter at your current summon level, the other possible results and any selection or eligibility conditions. If the interface has separate tabs for summon levels or reward tiers, inspect each relevant tab.
- List every currency the screen accepts. Note your ruby balance and the exact quantity of event tokens shown. If the notice says tokens are spent first, subtract those tokens from the summons you intend to make before estimating ruby use. Do not assume that a token from one event carries into another.
- Write down the cumulative milestones. Identify the reward that matters to you and the total summons required to reach it. If the current screen does not show a threshold, do not invent one from an older event; treat the missing number as unresolved and avoid a commitment based on it.
- Check the deadline against your realistic play schedule. Count only resources you already have or can obtain with certainty before the event closes. A plan that depends on an unconfirmed gift, a future ranking result or a promotion that has not been announced is not a reachable plan.
- Compare the target with your roster. Ask whether the featured fighter fills a role, element, link or progression need you can identify now. If the answer is only “the banner is available,” keep saving.
- Choose a stopping rule before summoning. Decide whether you will stop at a milestone, after obtaining the target, or when your planned budget is exhausted. A stopping rule prevents a near miss from turning into an unplanned drain of all reserves.
- Confirm the final prompt. Check which currency will be consumed, the number of summons and the remaining event time immediately before purchase. Screens and terms can change between events, so treat the confirmation dialog as the final source of truth.
Choose the goal before choosing the banner
Roster improvement
For progression, begin with the problem your current team cannot solve. It could be survivability, damage, control or a missing requirement for a mode. Then verify that the featured fighter addresses that problem with the systems your account actually uses. A highly advertised fighter is not automatically the best investment if your formation lacks the surrounding pieces needed to benefit from it.

Use Rate Info and the event’s reward track to separate two decisions: the chance of obtaining the fighter and the value of the guaranteed cumulative rewards. If the fighter is uncertain but a milestone provides a useful guaranteed item, calculate whether you can reach that milestone without exhausting resources reserved for a more suitable banner.
Collection or favorite-character goal
A collection goal is valid even when it is not the mathematically strongest progression choice. State the trade-off plainly: you are paying for access to a desired character, and the account may progress more slowly than it would by waiting for a roster-critical pickup. The same checks still apply—target availability, rate, milestone, deadline and currency order—because a favorite is not guaranteed merely because it is featured.
Saving for flexibility
If you do not have a defined target, saving preserves options. It lets you react when a future Pickup Summon fills a known gap, offers a reachable reward track or aligns with a collection plan. Avoid setting an arbitrary universal reserve such as “always save X rubies”; the official material does not establish a number that works across accounts or events.

Events often make the milestone—not a single lucky pull—the practical decision point. Use a simple calculation based only on values shown in your event screen:
Summons you can fund = event tokens consumed first + summons affordable with remaining rubies

Compare that total with the milestone count. If the result is below the threshold, you are buying an incomplete attempt unless the individual target is valuable enough on its own. If it meets or exceeds the threshold, reserve the resources required to finish rather than spending them piecemeal and discovering later that the reward is unreachable.
Keep a second line in your notes for resources you must not spend. For example, if you are saving for a different announced event, subtract that reserve before calculating the current banner’s budget. The calculation should use the event’s actual summon price and token conversion as displayed in game; no general price or October 2026 threshold is established in the official notices available here.
Pickup Summon versus Premium Summon and shops
Premium Summon
Netmarble’s Premium Summon guidance says the feature unlocks at Fighter Summon Level 5, uses a special currency and allows you to choose a pickup target. Those conditions make Premium Summon a distinct route, not simply another way to spend rubies. Confirm that your account has reached Fighter Summon Level 5 and that you possess the required special currency before treating it as an alternative.
The chosen-target feature may suit a focused roster plan, but the available guidance does not provide a direct ruby-to-Premium-currency conversion. Do not convert one into the other in your calculations, and do not assume that rubies can fund Premium Summon unless the current interface explicitly says so.
League Shop and Ranking Event Exchange Shop
The same guidance identifies the League Shop and Ranking Event Exchange Shop as places where certain Orochi Fighters can be found. These shops use their own requirements and currencies. If your objective is an Orochi Fighter, check whether the shop route is attainable before spending rubies on a less certain summon. Conversely, a shop listing does not mean the fighter is immediately obtainable; verify the item, exchange cost, eligibility and refresh or event rules shown in your account.

How to compare the routes

The route with the clearest path to your chosen objective is not necessarily the one with the largest headline reward. Compare certainty, time and opportunity cost as well as the advertised fighter.
What the August 2026 anniversary promotion means for saving
Netmarble announced a 500,000-ruby first-anniversary thank-you gift on August 20, 2026, alongside temporary Ruby BACK and summon promotions. The announcement stated that Fighters Festa ran from August 20 through September 16. Those dates make the promotion historical context as of October 13, 2026, not evidence of a current giveaway or a recurring Ruby BACK schedule.
Use past promotions as reminders to check official announcements, not as income projections. A previous 500,000-ruby gift does not establish normal ruby earnings, the size of a future gift or the return date of Ruby BACK. If a current offer exists, rely on its in-game notice or a dated official announcement and record its eligibility and end date before changing your budget.
Reading the October 2026 event list without overclaiming
The official forum listing observed on October 13, 2026 showed October notices, including an October 1 update and entries for Rugal Bernstein and Zero dated September 30. A listing confirms that notices exist; it does not establish each event’s ruby cost, rates, milestones or account eligibility.

For either fighter—or any other October entry—open the detailed notice and the in-game event screen. Verify the target pool, Rate Info, summon level, accepted currencies, cumulative count, reward reset behavior and deadline there. Do not treat an event title or forum date as proof that a banner is still summonable on your server or that its terms match another region or account.
Practical spending scenarios
You need a fighter for a current team problem
Spend when the live banner names the needed target, the displayed rate and reward track are acceptable, and your funded summon count reaches the milestone you value. Reserve the resources required for that plan first. If the target is absent or the threshold is unreachable, keep the rubies for a banner that addresses the problem directly.
You already have a strong roster and no urgent gap
Save. Flexibility has value when no current banner improves a defined objective. Recheck official notices and your roster after new events appear rather than converting idle rubies into low-purpose pulls.
You have event tokens but limited rubies
Read the event’s currency order. The Halloween notice consumed event tokens before rubies, which can reduce the ruby portion of a planned milestone. Apply that rule only if the current event states it; otherwise, the order is unknown until the interface confirms it.
You are close to a cumulative reward when the event is ending
Calculate the remaining summons using the displayed price and currencies, then compare it with your reserve. Finish only if the reward is worth the resources and the event remains open long enough to complete the transactions. A reward track that resets at the end gives no carryover credit to the next event.

You want an Orochi Fighter
Check Premium Summon after Fighter Summon Level 5 and inspect the League Shop and Ranking Event Exchange Shop. If one of those routes has a clear, attainable exchange, compare it with the uncertainty of a ruby-funded Pickup Summon. Keep currencies separate in your notes.

Using an old rate or cost
Problem: You rely on a screenshot or a previous banner. Fix: reopen Rate Info and the current event terms. Rates may vary by summon level, and event rules can change.
Spending without a milestone plan
Problem: You make a few pulls, then discover the useful cumulative reward is out of reach. Fix: calculate the total funded summons first and set a stopping rule.

Assuming every token works the same way
Problem: You expect tokens to be accepted or consumed before rubies because one event did so. Fix: read the current currency line. The Halloween token order is not a permanent rule.

Counting a past promotion as future income
Problem: You spend now because you expect another anniversary-sized gift or Ruby BACK period. Fix: treat the August–September 2026 promotion as ended and budget only resources confirmed for your account.
Confusing a forum listing with live eligibility
Problem: You see an October notice and assume the banner, rates and rewards are still available everywhere. Fix: verify the detailed notice and in-game screen for your server, account and current time.
A simple ruby decision worksheet
Keep one line per event so your decision is auditable before you summon:

When a field is not shown, mark it unknown and do not fill the gap with a community estimate. This keeps a missing detail from turning into an irreversible spending assumption.
Bottom line
Save KOF AFK rubies until a current Pickup Summon fits a specific roster or collection objective and gives you a realistic path to the reward you value. Read Rate Info at your summon level, verify currencies and their order, calculate the reachable milestone before pulling, and confirm the deadline. Premium Summon and the named shops are separate options with separate currencies and requirements. The 500,000-ruby anniversary gift and Ruby BACK promotion ended with the historical August–September 2026 celebration, so they should not anchor an October budget. When the live terms are unclear, preserving your rubies is the most reliable choice.
