Kodi is free, open-source media-center software for organizing and playing media you supply. It does not include films, TV shows, music, or paid channels. To get started, install Kodi from its official download page for your device, add your local or network media, and use the official add-on catalogue if you want to extend it.
What Kodi does—and what it does not provide
Kodi brings media playback and a library interface together across supported devices. You can use it with files stored on the device or accessible over your home network, and extend it with compatible add-ons. Kodi itself supplies the software, not the media: Kodi’s official download page states, “The official Kodi version does not contain any content whatsoever.”
That distinction matters when evaluating claims about a “Kodi box” or a preconfigured build. Kodi is not a subscription that unlocks paid movies, live channels, or events; access to content depends on the sources you configure and your authorization to use them.
How do I install Kodi?
- Identify your device and operating system. Kodi’s official downloads cover Windows, Linux, Android, Raspberry Pi, macOS, iOS, tvOS, and webOS. Installation routes differ by platform, so begin at the official Kodi download page and select your platform.
- Choose the stable release for normal use. Kodi recommends stable releases for ordinary users. Avoid development builds unless you specifically need to test software and can handle problems. Version listings change; the platform pages accessed October 7, 2026 displayed Kodi v21.3 Omega for Windows, Linux, and Android, but those snapshots are not a guarantee that it remains the latest version. Check the current Windows, Linux, or Android page before installing.
- Follow the platform’s official installation route. Download or install Kodi using the directions for your device on its official platform page. Availability and steps can vary by operating system and distribution method.
- Open Kodi and add your own media. Use Kodi’s library interface to point it to local folders or network locations where your media is stored. The software can organize and play accessible files, but it does not provide those files.
How do I add media to Kodi?
First decide where the media lives: on the device running Kodi, on a shared computer or storage device on your network, or through another source you are entitled to access. Then use Kodi’s library interface to select the relevant location and add it to the library. Make sure the Kodi device can reach the folder or network share; Kodi cannot display files it cannot access.

For a simple first setup, begin with one folder of personal video or music and confirm that Kodi can browse and play it. Once that works, add other folders or network locations. Keeping media in clearly named folders makes it easier to select the right source and maintain an organized library.
How do Kodi add-ons work?
Add-ons expand Kodi with functions such as music and video services, skins that change the interface, program or service tools, and web interfaces. Start with the official Kodi add-on catalogue, which lists add-ons by category. Availability depends on the Kodi version installed, so check version compatibility before following a setup guide.

There is an important difference between the official catalogue and third-party repositories or builds. Team Kodi says third-party sources are not produced, supported, or endorsed by it; they are not audited in the same way as the official catalogue. Its guidance also warns that unofficial builds can contain malware or break Kodi. An add-on’s presence or an online tutorial is not proof that its content is authorized: consider both where it comes from and whether you have permission to access the material.

Are Kodi add-ons safe?
No source can be treated as risk-free, but Kodi’s official add-on catalogue is the sensible starting point for a newcomer. Be cautious with third-party repositories, bundled builds, and devices advertised as instant access to paid movies, channels, or live events. Such offers may involve unauthorized content, and Kodi warns that unofficial builds can introduce malware or cause Kodi to stop working. Install only add-ons you trust, verify they support your version, and avoid granting access or installing software when you cannot establish what it does.

Is Kodi legal?
Kodi’s official legal explainer says, “As we supply it, Kodi is totally legal.” That is Kodi’s general description of its software, not a ruling for every country or every way someone may use it. The same article says users are responsible for the media and add-ons they choose; Team Kodi does not endorse or approve piracy of content that would otherwise require payment. Local law and the circumstances of a particular service or use can differ. Read Kodi’s legal explainer for its position, and make sure you are authorized to access the content you configure.
Which device and control method should you choose?
Kodi supports multiple platforms, but its official pages do not establish a current performance ranking or endorse a particular manufacturer. Choose based on your installation route, how the device will access your media, setup effort, and how you want to control playback.
- Check platform support and installation. Confirm that Kodi is available through an official route for your operating system, then follow the corresponding download page.
- Match the device to your media location. A device needs access to the folders or network shares you plan to use. Consider the connections and network setup required for that access.
- Pick a comfortable control method. Kodi supports television-oriented remote control, including supported device remotes and HDMI-CEC where available. Kodi also lists official free mobile remote apps; see the current options from its download page. Kodi does not sell hardware or promote one hardware option over another, as its software information explains.
Optional: play games with Kodi
Kodi’s overview identifies games and game-controller support as optional capabilities. If you want to play games, treat a game controller for Kodi as an accessory to check—not a guaranteed compatibility choice. Confirm that the controller works with both your Kodi device and the specific game before buying; the available official information does not identify a compatible model list.
