First determine whether Kodi is being rejected during installation or is installed but failing at launch. The correct fix depends on your TV’s operating system and model, Kodi version, installation source, Android package architecture, and the exact symptom—such as an install rejection, “Cannot download obb,” a blank screen, a crash, or an immediate return to the home screen.
Identify the failure before changing anything
“Kodi won’t work” describes several different problems. Treating every case as a sideloading problem can waste time or erase local settings unnecessarily.
| What you see | Where the failure occurs | Best first check |
|---|---|---|
| The package will not download, install, or is rejected as incompatible | Installation | Confirm the TV platform, model, Android version, official source, and package architecture. |
| Kodi is installed but shows a blank screen, crashes, or returns to the home screen | Launch | Restart the device, check Kodi’s file or storage permission, and then try clearing only the cache. |
| “Cannot download obb” appears | Launch or first-run data download | Record the Kodi and device versions. A documented Kodi 20.3 case on Chromecast with Google TV was version-specific and later marked fixed. |
| The TV has no Kodi listing in its app store | Platform or distribution | Verify whether the television is Android/Google TV, Apple tvOS, webOS, or another system. Store availability is not universal. |
Do not assume that a television with a “smart” label can run Android applications. The operating system, processor architecture, available storage, and vendor restrictions determine whether Kodi can install and run.

- Kodi version and edition. Kodi’s official Android downloads page listed Kodi v21.3 (Omega) when checked on October 13, 2026.
- Installation source: Google Play, Huawei App Gallery, a downloaded package from Kodi’s site, or another source.
- The complete error text, including capitalization. “Cannot download obb” is materially different from an installer saying that the package is incompatible.
- What happens after selecting Kodi: a permission prompt, blank screen, spinner, crash, or return to the launcher.
- A photograph of the screen and, when possible, a Kodi debug log.
Menus differ by manufacturer. Use the equivalent Settings, Apps, Permissions, Storage, and System Update labels on your TV rather than forcing a path designed for another model.
If Kodi won’t install on an Android TV or Google TV
Use an official distribution route first
On Android-based televisions, compare your installation method with Kodi’s official Android downloads page. That page lists Google Play and Huawei App Gallery, plus separate ARMV7A (32BIT) and ARMV8A (64BIT) downloads. A package built for the wrong architecture can be rejected or fail to run even when the download itself succeeds.
The Google Play listing is normally the least ambiguous route because the store selects an available build for the device. If Kodi is not offered for your particular television, that absence is evidence to investigate compatibility; it is not a reason to guess at a package or immediately enable unknown-source installation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the architecture instead of guessing
Android televisions may use 32-bit or 64-bit user space even when the underlying processor is capable of 64-bit operation. Confirm the architecture from the TV’s technical information, the manufacturer’s specifications, or a trusted system-information screen. Choose ARMV7A (32BIT) or ARMV8A (64BIT) only after that check.
Kodi itself cautions that “The success of running Kodi on an Android device depends on a number of factors as there are so many different devices with different capabilities.” That warning applies to televisions and streaming boxes as well as phones. A matching package does not guarantee that a vendor’s firmware, graphics stack, storage, or permissions will support Kodi correctly.
Retry a failed installation safely
- Restart the TV completely. If the television has a standby-only power button, disconnect power briefly or use its full restart option, then allow the system to finish booting.
- Check for pending system updates and install them through the TV’s normal update screen. Do not interrupt an update.
- Retry from Google Play or Huawei App Gallery when the app is listed there.
- If you are using a downloaded Kodi package, verify that the file came from Kodi’s official Android download page and that its architecture matches the device.
- Confirm that the TV has free internal storage. Delete only clearly disposable files; do not remove Kodi’s data or other application data as a first step.
- If Android blocks installation from a file manager, review the “install unknown apps” permission for that specific file manager. Enable it only when you understand the source, then disable it again afterward.
Do not use the Kodi Android repository README as a consumer installation guide. Its APK and ADB instructions are intended for developer builds and development workflows, not a universal fix for a retail television.

If Kodi is installed but won’t open
Restart, then inspect permissions
A blank screen or immediate return to the home screen is a launch failure, not an installation failure. Restart once and open Kodi again. If the symptom remains, open the TV’s app-management screen, select Kodi, and inspect its file or storage permission. Depending on the Android release, the control may be labelled Files and media, Photos and videos, Music and audio, or Storage.
Recommended Free Tools
Some users in a Kodi project issue discussion reported that allowing file access appeared to resolve a launch problem. That is an anecdotal observation, not a guaranteed fix for every version or television. If the permission is already allowed, do not repeatedly toggle it; move to the cache check and record what you changed.
Clear cache, not data
From the same app-management screen, choose Storage or Storage and cache, then select Clear cache. Reopen Kodi. Clearing cache removes temporary files; it should not be confused with Clear data, Clear storage, or a factory reset.
Another user report described a cache clear helping a device, but reports like this do not establish a universal cause. Do not clear app data or uninstall Kodi before considering the effect on local settings, add-on configuration, downloaded files, and library information. If you have local-only content, export or back up the library and settings first when your existing installation still opens enough to do so.
Check free space and external storage
A nearly full TV can fail while unpacking an application or creating its first-run files. Check internal storage and remove unused applications or safe-to-delete downloads. If Kodi’s library or media is on removable or network storage, temporarily test launch with that storage disconnected only if doing so will not alter or delete anything. Reconnect it after the test.

“Cannot download obb” refers to a failure involving Kodi’s additional application data during startup; it is not the same as Android refusing to install the package. A Kodi project report documented this message with Kodi 20.3 on Chromecast with Google TV in January 2024. The issue page is marked fixed by a code change, so it is a historical, version-specific example rather than proof of a current broad defect.

If you see this message:
- Record the Kodi version, Android or Google TV version, and exact device model.
- Restart the device and verify that internal storage is available.
- Check Kodi’s file or storage permission.
- If the problem began after an interrupted or unusual installation, remove only the incomplete package through the normal app settings after backing up local data, then reinstall from an official route that matches the device.
- Do not assume that installing an unrelated older version is a permanent solution. A fix for Kodi 20.3 on one Chromecast configuration does not establish compatibility for another release or TV.
Blank screen, crash, or return to home screen
Android TV OS 14 and Kodi 21.2 reports
A March 2025 open Kodi project report described blank-screen or crash behavior on Chromecast running Android TV OS 14 with Kodi 21.2. The reporter also noted permission-denied errors. This makes permission inspection a sensible low-risk check, but the report does not prove that every blank screen on Android TV OS 14 has the same cause.
Android 16 and Kodi 21.3 reports
A March 2026 report involving Android 16 and Kodi 21.3 described black-screen and crash symptoms. Its technical explanation was a user-submitted proposed analysis, not an independently confirmed general root cause. Similar symptoms can result from permissions, incompatible firmware, graphics initialization, corrupted temporary files, or a release-specific defect.
Because these reports involve different operating-system and Kodi versions, copy the full version combination into any support request. Repeating an old workaround without matching the versions can hide the information needed to diagnose the current failure.

Android TV and Google TV
These systems may offer Kodi through an app store or support an official Android package, but availability and behavior depend on the exact device. The Android downloads page lists store options and ARMV7A and ARMV8A packages; it does not turn every Android-labelled television into a supported Kodi host.
Apple TV and tvOS
Kodi’s tvOS documentation describes Xcode/developer methods and methods for jailbroken devices. That is a fundamentally different path from tapping Install in a regular television app store. Confirm the current tvOS instructions and the Apple TV model before attempting developer installation. Do not apply Android APK steps to an Apple TV.
LG webOS and other smart-TV systems
Kodi’s webOS repository documentation covers developer packaging and installation through webOS tooling. It should not be read as evidence that every webOS television has a consumer-ready Kodi store application. For any platform other than Android or Google TV, identify the exact model and follow the platform’s current Kodi documentation.

A complete troubleshooting sequence
Use this order to minimize data risk and avoid mixing unrelated fixes:
- Classify the symptom. Decide whether the package is rejected, Kodi installs but does not launch, a specific message such as “Cannot download obb” appears, or the app opens to a blank screen.
- Collect versions and source. Record the TV model, operating system, Kodi version, installation route, and exact error.
- Restart once. A full restart clears a transient process or pending update without changing Kodi’s data.
- Validate the installation route. Prefer the official store when available. For a downloaded Android package, verify ARMV7A versus ARMV8A and confirm the source.
- Check permissions. In the TV’s app settings, allow the file or storage access Kodi needs. Labels vary by Android release.
- Clear only the cache. Reopen Kodi and note the result. Do not select Clear data or Clear storage as a routine next step.
- Check storage and updates. Ensure sufficient internal space and apply available TV system updates.
- Back up before destructive actions. Preserve local settings, library data, and downloaded files before uninstalling Kodi or clearing its data.
- Escalate with evidence. If the failure remains, provide the exact model, OS version, Kodi version, installation source, error text, steps already tried, and a Kodi debug log to Kodi’s official help or community channels, or in a reproducible issue report.
How to capture useful diagnostic information
A screenshot of a black screen is less useful than a complete timeline. Note whether the problem began after an operating-system update, Kodi update, permission change, storage change, or reinstall. Include the time of the failure and whether Kodi ever worked on the same device.
When Kodi can open its settings, enable debug logging using Kodi’s own logging controls, reproduce the failure once, and save the resulting log according to Kodi’s support instructions. Remove personal network addresses or account details before sharing a log publicly. If Kodi cannot open at all, include the TV’s Android system logs only when the manufacturer’s support process makes them available; do not claim a root cause from a single crash line.
When a separate streaming device is appropriate
If the television’s operating system is not a supported or practical Kodi host, a separately compatible Android TV streaming device may be an option. Treat this as a platform decision, not a cure for a permission problem, bad cache state, or a Kodi software defect on the existing TV.
Before buying hardware, verify the exact model’s current operating-system version, Kodi distribution route, architecture, available storage, and vendor restrictions. Do not generalize from a different model in the same product family. If Kodi already installs on the TV but fails because of permissions or a release-specific bug, changing hardware may simply move the problem or create new setup work.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing 32-bit or 64-bit packages by guesswork.
- Calling a launch crash an installation failure and repeatedly reinstalling.
- Treating a developer ADB or repository build guide as a normal consumer installer.
- Enabling unknown-source installation before checking whether the official store supports the device.
- Clearing app data or uninstalling before backing up local settings and library information.
- Assuming a report from Kodi 20.3, 21.2, or 21.3 applies to every Kodi release.
- Applying Android instructions to Apple tvOS or webOS.
- Interpreting one user’s proposed technical explanation as a confirmed universal cause.
- Buying a streaming device without checking its exact model and current Kodi compatibility.
What to include when asking for help
A useful support post can be short if it is precise: “TV model; operating system and version; Kodi version; installation source; exact error; what happens after launch; permissions shown; free storage; restart/cache result; and a debug log.” State whether the package installed successfully and whether Kodi ever opened on that device. That distinction prevents helpers from sending installation instructions to someone who has a launch problem.
