Kodi 22 Piers RC 1 is a prerelease, not the stable Kodi 22 release. As of October 13, 2026, Kodi’s release history lists Kodi 21.3 Omega as the latest released version and Piers 22.0 as in development. Try RC 1 if you want to evaluate near-final changes and can tolerate bugs; if Kodi is essential to your everyday media setup, wait for a stable release. Team Kodi recommends making a backup before installing it.
What does Kodi 22 RC 1 mean?
Kodi 22 is the release named Piers, and RC 1 is its first release candidate. A release candidate is a near-final prerelease that a project evaluates before issuing the final version. Team Kodi says it believes it has reached the state it wants to ship for version 22, while continuing to track bugs, particularly in features introduced during the v22 development cycle. The project describes RC 1 as cutting-edge and asks users to back up their setup and share feedback. Team Kodi’s October 10, 2026 announcement explains the release.
“Release candidate” signals that a build is further along than an early alpha or beta, but it is not a guarantee that every function is finished. It does not establish that every add-on, device, or configuration will work as expected. RC 1 remains a test release, and its suitability depends on how much disruption you can accept.
How is an RC different from a beta or stable release?
The labels describe where the project is in its release process, not a promise about your particular installation. An alpha is generally an earlier development build, a beta is a broader testing build, and an RC is intended to be close to the final version. Kodi’s wording is important here: Team Kodi says it has reached the final state it wants to ship for v22, but it is still tracking bugs, mostly in features introduced in v22. That combination means RC 1 is mature enough for focused testing while remaining unsuitable for anyone who requires a guaranteed trouble-free upgrade.

| Build label | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Alpha | Earlier development and experimentation. | That core features or add-ons are ready for routine use. |
| Beta | A wider testing phase with more settled features. | That every regression has been found or every platform is compatible. |
| Release candidate | The project believes the build is close to what it will ship. | That remaining bugs, platform issues, or add-on failures are impossible. |
| Stable release | The project has ended the prerelease phase for that version. | That every individual library, device, skin, or add-on will behave identically. |
For Kodi 22, RC 1 is therefore a signal to test deliberately, not a signal to replace a dependable installation automatically. A release candidate can be the right choice for a tester who wants to find problems before the final release and the wrong choice for a household that simply wants uninterrupted playback.
Is Kodi 22 Piers RC 1 stable, and what is the latest stable version?
As of October 13, 2026, the Official Kodi Wiki release history lists “Piers | 22.0 | In Development” and “Omega | 21.3 | 13 Dec 2025.” On that date, 21.3 Omega was therefore the latest released version shown by the history page, while Piers 22.0 was still in development. RC 1 is not the stable Kodi 22 release.
Release status can change quickly. The dates and version status above describe what the official pages showed on October 13, 2026, not a permanent status. Check the release history and announcement immediately before downloading; a later candidate or the final release may have superseded RC 1.

Should you install Kodi 22 RC 1?
Use the decision points below rather than treating “near-final” as equivalent to “safe for every household.” This is guidance based on the project’s prerelease designation, acknowledged issues, and backup recommendation—not a claim of independent testing.
| Your situation | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You rely on Kodi for everyday viewing, and an interruption would be unwelcome. | Wait for a stable release. | RC 1 is still a prerelease, and Team Kodi says it is tracking bugs. |
| You want to try Piers changes and can accept troubleshooting or reporting a problem. | Consider RC 1 on a nonessential or backed-up setup. | That is the use case for evaluating a release candidate, with the risks understood. |
| You need a particular add-on or device to work without interruption. | Do not assume compatibility; wait or verify the specific combination. | The announcement does not establish compatibility for an individual device or add-on. |
| You are interested in the new HDR, subtitle, Blu-ray, or game-related work but do not need it today. | Compare the relevant Piers changes with your needs, then decide whether testing is worthwhile. | The headline feature list describes the broader v22 development cycle, not a promise that every change is bug-free in RC 1. |
| You can report reproducible problems and have another way to watch media. | RC 1 may be a reasonable test build. | Your setup gives you room to evaluate and communicate problems without making the prerelease your only option. |
If your reason to install is simply to keep using Kodi, RC 1 offers no necessary upgrade over the released version identified in the release history. If your reason is to test changes or provide feedback, take the backup seriously and be prepared for bugs.
What is new in Kodi 22 Piers?
Team Kodi’s headline list describes the broader Piers development cycle. Its themes include HDR and video playback, improved identification of Blu-ray movies and episodes, RetroPlayer game features, and changes across the video library, PVR, Android, webOS, and Apple platforms. Highlights named by the project include HDR overlays, UHD PGS subtitles, subtitle colour handling and HDR-to-SDR subtitle tone mapping; Blu-ray playlist matching and navigation; RetroAchievements, shader support and game-handling improvements; Android deep links; SVG support; and initial WebAssembly support.
These highlights answer “what is Kodi 22 about?” more than “what was invented in RC 1?” Several capabilities arrived during earlier Piers development. A reader interested in one of them should therefore read the RC 1 changelog and test the exact workflow rather than assuming the headline feature is a new, complete, or universally supported component.

HDR and subtitle work
The Piers list calls out HDR overlays, UHD PGS subtitles, subtitle colour handling, and HDR-to-SDR subtitle tone mapping. Those items matter most to people whose libraries and displays use high-dynamic-range video or high-resolution Blu-ray subtitle tracks. They do not remove the need to check the display path and operating-system behavior on the device being tested. Team Kodi specifically notes a Linux HDR rendering issue in the known-issues section, so HDR-related testing deserves extra attention on Linux.
Blu-ray and library handling
Smarter Blu-ray movie and episode detection, playlist matching, and navigation are intended to make disc-derived content easier for Kodi to identify and browse. The release notes do not certify every disc structure or library layout. Test representative titles from your own collection, especially if correct playlist selection or episode identification is the reason you are considering the upgrade.
RetroPlayer and games
RetroAchievements, shader support, and game-handling improvements are part of the broader Piers feature story. They may be compelling to users who use Kodi as more than a video player, but the project still describes RC 1 as cutting-edge. Treat game features as a test target and keep a way to return to your usual setup if a game workflow is important.
Platform and interface changes
Android deep links, SVG support, initial WebAssembly support, and changes to the video library, PVR, webOS, and Apple platforms broaden the release’s scope. A platform being named in the headline list does not mean every model or operating-system revision has been validated. Device-specific and add-on-specific compatibility remain questions for the exact combination you use.
What changed specifically in RC 1?
The RC 1 changelog covers changes since Beta 2, rather than the entire set of features accumulated during Piers development. It records an upgrade to FFmpeg v9.0.2, video playback fixes and stream-detection improvements, HDR PGS subtitle improvements, audio and PVR fixes, Blu-ray handling changes, RetroPlayer improvements, library and interface fixes, and networking and security changes.
The FFmpeg v9.0.2 update is a technical identifier, not a guarantee that every codec or stream will play better in every setup. Similarly, “stream-detection improvements” and playback fixes describe areas of work; they do not establish performance for a particular file, service, tuner, or network.
This distinction matters when deciding whether to install: a feature may be part of Kodi 22’s development story without being a new RC 1 change. The announcement identifies areas of work, but it does not promise that a feature will suit every setup or that a particular add-on will support it. Read the changelog for the change window since Beta 2, then match it to the problems or features that matter to you.

Team Kodi calls the build cutting-edge and says bugs remain. It highlights two specific caveats:

- Brand Yourself - Brand the flash drive with your company's name and provide company's overview, policies, etc. to the newly joined employees or your customers
- Matroska tagging: Builds without the project’s patched TagLib 2.3.1 have Matroska tagging degraded back to the v21 behavior.
- Linux HDR playback: HDR video playback may make some GUI or on-screen display (OSD) elements appear too transparent, washed out, or fuzzy.
The Matroska note concerns tagging behavior, so users who edit or inspect metadata in Matroska files should verify the behavior they depend on rather than assuming the v22 path is identical everywhere. The TagLib detail also means that the build’s included or patched library matters; do not generalize the behavior to every Kodi package without checking the package in question.
The Linux HDR note concerns the visibility and appearance of interface and OSD elements while HDR video is playing. It may affect navigation or on-screen controls even when the video itself starts. If HDR is central to your setup, test both playback and the controls you use during playback.
These are the announcement’s stated known issues, not an exhaustive list of everything that could go wrong. The source does not establish whether a particular user’s operating system, hardware, library, or add-ons will encounter an issue. Check the official announcement for updates before installing or troubleshooting.
How do you get Kodi 22 RC 1?
Team Kodi directs users to the official download page. Choose your platform there, then select the build in the “Prerelease” section. The exact package and installation steps depend on the platform; the announcement does not provide one universal installer procedure.
- Check the current release status. Review the official release history and the RC 1 announcement to confirm that this is still the candidate you intend to install.
- Decide whether this is a test installation. If the device is the only way your household watches media, waiting is the lower-risk choice. If you proceed, make sure you can tolerate troubleshooting.
- Back up your Kodi setup. Team Kodi explicitly recommends taking a backup before installing the prerelease. It does not prescribe a specific backup destination or method.
- Open Kodi’s official download page and select your platform. Use the project’s download route rather than an unofficial repackaged installer.
- Choose the build under “Prerelease.” Do not confuse a prerelease package with a stable release.
- Follow the platform-specific installation instructions and test the setup. Pay particular attention to the features and add-ons you depend on; compatibility is not guaranteed by the announcement.
- Record what you observe. Note the platform, the feature being tested, and the circumstances of any failure so your feedback is more useful than a general report that “Kodi broke.”
- Share useful feedback if you encounter a problem. Team Kodi asks RC users to report their experiences. Include the platform and the circumstances of the issue when using the project’s feedback channels.
The official announcement recommends a backup but does not document a universal rollback or restore procedure. Keep your backup available and consult the instructions appropriate to your platform if you need to recover your previous setup. Do not assume that installing a later build automatically reverses every change made by an RC.
What should you test after installation?
A short, purposeful test is more useful than opening Kodi once and declaring the build stable. Start with the activities that would cause the most disruption if they failed:
- Play the video formats and streams you use most often, including any HDR material relevant to your display.
- Check subtitle rendering, particularly UHD PGS subtitles, colour handling, and HDR-to-SDR behavior if those features matter to you.
- Open representative Blu-ray movie and episode structures and verify identification, playlist selection, and navigation.
- Exercise audio playback and PVR functions if they are part of your daily setup.
- Open your video library and inspect the interface for errors, missing items, or unexpected behavior.
- Test important add-ons and device controls individually instead of assuming that a successful launch proves compatibility.
On Linux, include HDR playback with the GUI and OSD visible so you can notice the transparency, washed-out, or fuzzy rendering Team Kodi describes. If Matroska tagging is important, check the behavior of a representative file and determine whether the package includes the patched TagLib 2.3.1 mentioned in the announcement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo you need special hardware or storage?
The release materials identify no hardware requirement specific to Kodi 22 RC 1. They also do not specify any product needed to install it. A backup needs a destination, but the project does not require a particular type of storage; suitable storage you already have may be enough. A USB flash drive is only one possible destination, not an official requirement.

Do not buy a Kodi box, remote, graphics device, or storage product merely because you are installing RC 1. The announcement does not say that new hardware is needed. Hardware compatibility remains dependent on the device and operating-system combination you already use, and the release notes do not establish a universal compatibility list.
What does the announcement establish—and what remains unknown?
The project’s release notes are useful for understanding intended changes and acknowledged issues, but they cannot determine how RC 1 will behave in every individual setup. Treat these as separate questions:
- Release status: The official history page showed 22.0 in development and 21.3 as the latest released version on October 13, 2026.
- Feature scope: The announcement lists both broad Piers development highlights and changes since Beta 2; those are not interchangeable lists.
- Personal compatibility: Add-on and device support depend on the specific combinations involved. The announcement does not certify them for your setup.
- Reliability: The project acknowledges remaining bugs. No independent testing results are established here.
- Installation method: The official route is the platform-specific download page and its “Prerelease” section; there is no single procedure that applies to every platform.
- Recovery: A backup is recommended, but the announcement does not provide one universal rollback or restore workflow.
Keeping those distinctions clear helps avoid two common mistakes: treating a release candidate as a finished stable release, and assuming a broad feature highlight means that every part of it was added in RC 1 or will work in every environment.
Common decision mistakes to avoid
Do not install solely because the version number is higher. The relevant question is whether a Piers change solves a problem you have and whether you can absorb a prerelease failure. Do not infer add-on support from a platform mention such as Android, Apple, webOS, or PVR. Do not treat the absence of a problem during a brief launch as proof that playback, metadata, subtitles, or remote controls will remain reliable.
Also avoid downloading an unofficial repackaged installer to obtain RC 1. Team Kodi directs users to its official download page, where the platform and “Prerelease” selection identify the intended package. Finally, do not skip the backup because RC 1 is called near-final. The project’s explicit backup request is part of the release guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kodi 22 RC 1 the final Kodi 22 release?
No. RC 1 is the first release candidate for Kodi 22 Piers. On October 13, 2026, the Official Kodi Wiki still listed Piers 22.0 as in development and Kodi 21.3 Omega as the latest released version shown.
Is RC 1 safer than a beta?
It is later in the release cycle and intended to be near final, but it is still a prerelease. Team Kodi says bugs remain, especially in v22 features, so “release candidate” is not a guarantee of stable behavior.

Can I roll back automatically if RC 1 causes trouble?
Team Kodi’s announcement recommends a backup but does not document one universal rollback or restore procedure. Keep the backup available and follow platform-specific recovery instructions if needed.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Kodi 22 Piers RC 1 is a near-final test build, not stable Kodi 22. It is worth considering if you specifically want to evaluate its HDR, subtitle, Blu-ray, RetroPlayer, library, or platform changes and can test from a backed-up setup. If Kodi is central to daily viewing, if you depend on a particular add-on or device, or if troubleshooting would be unacceptable, stay on the released version shown by the official history until a stable Kodi 22 build is published. Check Team Kodi’s October 10, 2026 announcement and the release history immediately before downloading because the status may change.
