Kodi 22 “Piers” Release Candidate 1, announced October 10, 2026, adds game-focused RetroPlayer features—including a new cheat engine—and Android deep-link support. It is still prerelease software. Team Kodi also reports that HDR video playback on Linux may make some interface and on-screen-display elements look too transparent, washed out, or fuzzy.
What’s new in Kodi 22 RC1?
The release candidate’s game changes center on RetroPlayer, Kodi’s game-playing features. Team Kodi highlights shader support, new scaling options, improved multi-disc handling, RetroAchievements support, a new cheat engine, and OpenGL hardware rendering for 3D games. The detailed changelog also lists hardware rendering for game clients using Game API 8.2.0.
The announcement additionally lists Kodi deep-link support on Android. It does not explain how the links are implemented or what specific link actions are supported, so those details should not be assumed.
These are among broader Kodi 22 changes that also include video and HDR work. The release notes mention an upgrade to FFmpeg 9.0.2, improved HDR PGS subtitle handling, and HDR overlay changes. Those general improvements do not mean the separate Linux interface issue is resolved.

Does Kodi 22 RC1 have a Linux HDR menu bug?
Yes. Team Kodi’s known-issues note says: “On Linux, HDR video playback may make some GUI/OSD elements too transparent, washed out, or fuzzy.” The report is specific to Linux HDR playback and some interface or on-screen-display elements; it does not establish that all Linux users or HDR setups are affected.
The announcement does not identify affected distributions, graphics hardware, drivers, or desktop environments. It also gives no confirmed cause, workaround, or fix date. Treat this as a reported RC1 symptom, not as a diagnosis or evidence that a particular setting will fix it.
Is Kodi 22 Piers RC1 stable or ready to install?
RC1 is a prerelease, not a stable-release announcement. Team Kodi describes it as the first release candidate after beta and says the team believes it has reached the final state it wants to ship, while still tracking a few bugs. That is a statement about the project’s intended state, not a guarantee of stability or compatibility.

Trying it makes the most sense if you want to test the RetroPlayer changes or Android deep links and are comfortable providing feedback on prerelease software. If you rely on Linux HDR playback or prefer a stable release, waiting is the more cautious choice. The announcement does not quantify the risk or rank platforms by reliability.

How to get RC1—and what to do first
- Open Team Kodi’s Kodi 22 “Piers” RC 1 announcement and follow its Downloads link.
- Select your platform and look in the Prerelease section for RC1.
- Back up your Kodi setup before installing. Team Kodi explicitly advises: “And take a backup first!”
- Share your experience with the project if you test the release.
The announcement does not provide rollback instructions. Do not treat this as a routine stable-channel upgrade if you need a guaranteed return path.
