Neither Kobo nor Kindle is best for everyone. Choose Kindle when your purchases, subscriptions, or existing collection are already in Amazon’s ecosystem. Choose Kobo when EPUB support, sideloading, comics, or direct OverDrive borrowing in a supported country and library matter more. Then choose a specific model based on screen size, colour, page-turn buttons, waterproofing, handwriting, accessibility, and your local price.
This is a habit-based decision, not a universal brand ranking. The specifications below come from manufacturer documentation rather than independent performance testing, so they show what each model is designed to do—not which screen looks better or which battery lasts longer in real use.
Quick verdict: Kobo or Kindle?
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Keeping Amazon purchases and reading in one account | Kindle | It is the natural fit for books and services you already obtain through Amazon. Confirm that every title and service you rely on is available for your particular account and marketplace. |
| Reading EPUB files and personal documents | Kobo | Kobo documents native support for EPUB-family files, PDF, MOBI, comics, images, and text formats. DRM can still restrict what opens directly. |
| Borrowing from a public library | Kobo, where supported | Selected Kobo models offer OverDrive integration, but country support and the books offered by your own library determine whether it works for you. |
| Colour comics, diagrams, or highlighted textbooks | Compare Kobo colour models with Kindle Colorsoft models | Both lineups include colour devices. The cited manufacturer pages do not establish a display-quality winner. |
| Physical page-turn buttons | Kobo Libra Colour or Sage | Kobo identifies buttons on these models. Do not assume every current Kindle has buttons; Amazon’s guide mainly identifies them on older Oasis models. |
| Handwritten notes | Kobo Sage/Libra Colour or Kindle Scribe family | Kobo stylus compatibility is limited to selected models and the Sage stylus is sold separately. Amazon lists Scribe models with a pen included. |
Before comparing processors, storage, or advertised battery figures, make an inventory of the books you already own, the stores you use, and your library account. A device that cannot open your normal files is a poor bargain even if its hardware is attractive.

Kindle and an Amazon-centred library
Kindle is the least disruptive choice when your books were bought through Amazon and you want purchases, downloads, reading position, and device management to remain in that ecosystem. Amazon’s Kindle model-identification guide covers current and earlier families, including Paperwhite, Colorsoft, Scribe, and basic Kindle models.

That does not mean every file on your computer becomes a Kindle book automatically. Check the format, delivery method, and any publisher restrictions for the individual title. Amazon’s Kindle format documentation distinguishes reflowable ebooks from print-replica and image-based books, which can behave very differently when you resize text or use assistive technology.
Kobo’s EPUB and sideloading advantage
Kobo’s official supported-format list includes EPUB, EPUB2, EPUB3, PDF, FlePub, MOBI, common image and text formats, and CBZ/CBR comic archives. That broad list makes Kobo attractive if you obtain books from several stores, maintain your own DRM-free collection, or transfer documents by cable rather than keeping everything in one retailer’s cloud.
Format support is not the same as universal access. An EPUB protected with Adobe DRM may require Adobe Digital Editions to authorize and transfer it. A social-DRM file can generally be read without that extra step. If a seller uses a different DRM system, the file may not open even though “EPUB” appears in its filename. Before buying a Kobo, identify the DRM method used by your non-Kobo books.

For novels and essays, EPUB’s reflowable text is usually easier to read than a fixed PDF. PDFs can preserve a page design but may require zooming and panning on a six-inch screen. CBZ and CBR support is useful for comic archives, although the experience still depends on panel layout and the screen’s size and colour capability. Treat the file extension as a starting point, not a guarantee that a book will be comfortable.
Can I borrow library books on Kobo or Kindle?
Kobo’s conditional OverDrive workflow
Kobo says supported eReaders can connect to OverDrive, allowing you to search for and borrow eligible ebooks through a participating library. Its Sage documentation describes three sources—“the integrated Kobo eBookstore, library book borrowing, or sideloading your own eBooks”—but immediately qualifies that OverDrive is available only in select countries and that availability varies by library location. See the Kobo Sage product page and Kobo’s eReader feature matrix for those conditions.

Check your own library before treating this as a deciding feature. Search its catalogue for the titles you actually borrow, ask which loan platform it uses, and verify whether the specific Kobo model can sign in directly. A library may list a title but have no available digital licence, or may offer it only through a workflow your device does not support.
Do not make a blanket “Kindle cannot borrow” assumption
Library lending depends on country, library supplier, title licence, and device workflow. The available documentation here establishes Kobo’s conditional OverDrive support, not a complete country-by-country comparison of Kindle lending. Confirm the exact process offered by your library rather than relying on a brand-wide rule.
Current Kobo models and prices

What the Kobo Sage adds
The Sage is an 8-inch Kobo with a 300-PPI display, 32 GB of storage, and IPX8 protection rated by Kobo for up to 60 minutes in 2 metres of water. It is compatible with Kobo Stylus 2, which Kobo notes is sold separately. The model supports 15 natively supported formats according to Kobo’s product documentation.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Sage makes sense when a six-inch reader feels cramped for PDFs, when you want page-turn buttons, or when handwriting is a genuine part of your reading routine. It is less compelling if you only read ordinary novels and prefer the lightest, least expensive device. Waterproofing is a specification, not permission to ignore the care instructions or expose the reader to salt water, soap, or high-pressure spray.

What the current Kindle families offer
Amazon’s model guide identifies several families rather than one “Kindle” specification. The 12th-generation Kindle Paperwhite is listed as a 2024 release with adjustable warm light, up to 12 weeks of battery life, IPX8 waterproofing, 16 GB of internal storage, and VoiceView over Bluetooth. “Up to 12 weeks” is Amazon’s model claim under its stated test conditions; it is not a comparative laboratory result.
The same guide lists 2026 releases, including a basic Kindle with a 6-inch, 300-PPI display and a user-replaceable battery, as well as 2025 Scribe Colorsoft devices. Release labels and availability can depend on the Amazon marketplace you use. Verify the generation on the product page before ordering, especially when a retailer’s title omits the release year.
Amazon’s guide does not provide a like-for-like retail price set comparable to the Kobo catalog prices above. Check your local Amazon listing at the time of purchase and distinguish a current model from an older clearance device.
Choose by the way you read
Mostly novels, travel, and commuting
A six-inch reader is easier to carry and is sufficient for reflowable novels. Clara BW and Clara Colour occupy that Kobo size class; Amazon’s basic Kindle is also listed with a 6-inch, 300-PPI display. Choose monochrome if you mainly read text and want to avoid paying for colour. Choose colour only when coloured covers, diagrams, or comics will materially improve your use; a colour screen is not automatically more comfortable for every novel.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Large PDFs, textbooks, and reference material
An 8-inch device such as Sage gives fixed-layout pages more room than a six-inch screen. Even then, a complex PDF may require zooming. Before buying, open sample files with diagrams, two-column pages, or footnotes. Confirm that your note-taking app or transfer method handles the documents you use; a larger screen does not remove DRM or reflow limitations.
Reading by a pool, in a bath, or outdoors
Amazon lists IPX8 waterproofing for the 12th-generation Paperwhite. Kobo marks several catalog models as waterproof, and specifically rates Sage for up to 60 minutes in 2 metres of water. Compare the exact model’s protection rating and follow its care guidance. Do not infer that an unlisted model has the same protection because it shares a brand name.
One-handed page turning
Kobo’s Libra Colour and Sage are identified with physical page-turn buttons. Amazon’s guide identifies buttons on older Oasis models, so a current Kindle purchase should not be assumed to include them. If you read while exercising, cooking, or holding a device in one hand, confirm button placement, orientation, and the exact generation in the listing.
Colour comics and diagrams
Kobo’s catalog includes the 6-inch Clara Colour and 7-inch Libra Colour. Amazon’s guide includes Colorsoft models. Both facts establish availability, not a visual-quality ranking. Compare the screen size to your comics’ panel density and consider whether colour is useful often enough to justify the higher price and storage choices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHandwriting and annotations
Kobo stylus support is limited to selected models, including Libra Colour and Sage; Kobo says the Sage stylus is sold separately. Amazon lists Scribe models with a pen included. Compare the size of the writing area, supported document types, export options, and whether the pen is included in the local package. The cited pages do not establish which annotation system feels faster or more natural, so do not treat a compatibility badge as a handwriting-quality verdict.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Accessibility: check the book as well as the device
Hardware accessibility cannot compensate for an inaccessible ebook. Amazon says accessibility labels on Kindle book listings are based on details supplied by the publisher. Its documentation distinguishes reflowable books from print-replica and image-based books; the latter may not support screen readers, braille displays, or text resizing in the same way.
Kindle’s supported hardware can provide VoiceView over Bluetooth, including on the 12th-generation Paperwhite. Before buying a title, open its accessibility information and look for the exact features you need. A reflowable edition may allow larger text and assistive reading while a visually identical print-replica edition does not. Check the book listing, not just the device name.
Price, storage, and value decisions
Storage needs depend on what you keep locally. The Kobo catalog lists 16 GB for Clara BW and Clara Colour, and 32 GB for Libra Colour and Sage. Amazon lists 16 GB for the 12th-generation Paperwhite. Text novels occupy little space; comics, audiobooks where supported, and large PDFs consume more. Do not pay for extra capacity solely because a number is larger if your library is mostly ordinary ebooks.

The observed Kobo US prices were $159.99 for Clara BW, $179.99 for Clara Colour, $259.99 for Libra Colour, $269.99 for Sage, and $399.99 for Elipsa 2E. They may change after October 13, 2026 and do not establish a global price comparison. For Kindle, compare the current local listing, generation, storage tier, lock-screen terms if shown, and included accessories.
A practical decision process
- List your sources. Write down the stores, library service, DRM-free files, PDFs, and comic archives you actually use.
- Test the hardest book. Identify the title or file most likely to cause trouble. Check its format, DRM, accessibility labels, and transfer instructions.
- Verify library compatibility. Search your library catalogue and confirm country, loan platform, model support, and availability of the titles you borrow.
- Choose the screen. Pick six inches for portability, seven inches for a balance of space and weight, or eight inches and above for documents and handwriting.
- Add only useful features. Select colour, buttons, waterproofing, or a stylus when you can name a recurring reading task that needs it.
- Check the exact generation and price. Match the model name, release year, storage, warranty, accessories, and local price on the retailer’s page.
- Plan your transfers. For Kobo, prepare Adobe Digital Editions if an Adobe-DRM seller requires it. For either brand, keep original files and proof of purchase until the book opens correctly.
Common traps and how to avoid them
- “Kobo reads EPUB, so every EPUB will work.” DRM type and licensing still control access. Confirm whether the file is DRM-free, social-DRM, or Adobe-protected.
- “OverDrive works everywhere.” Kobo says it is available only in select countries, and each library controls its catalogue and licences. Verify locally.
- “All Kindles have the same features.” Paperwhite, Colorsoft, Scribe, basic Kindle, and older Oasis models differ in screen, buttons, storage, waterproofing, and accessibility support.
- “A colour reader is automatically better.” Colour can help comics and diagrams but does not prove superior text reading for every person. Choose it for a real use case.
- “Waterproof means indestructible.” IPX8 ratings are model-specific and subject to care instructions; they do not cover every liquid or accident.
- “More storage solves format problems.” Extra gigabytes cannot open a DRM system the device does not support, nor can they make a fixed PDF reflow.
- “The device determines accessibility.” Publisher-created book structure matters. Inspect the accessibility information for every title that must work with a screen reader, braille, or enlarged text.
Bottom-line choice by reader profile
| Reader profile | Most defensible starting point | Confirm before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon buyer with an established Kindle library | Kindle Paperwhite or the Kindle model matching your preferred size and colour needs | Exact generation, local price, storage, waterproofing, and accessibility support |
| EPUB collector with files from several sources | Kobo Clara BW/Colour or Libra Colour | DRM type, transfer method, and whether 16 GB is enough |
| Library borrower in a country with supported OverDrive access | A compatible Kobo model | Your library’s catalogue, loan availability, and account workflow |
| Comic or diagram reader | Colour Kobo or Kindle Colorsoft family | Panel size, colour usefulness, file format, and screen dimensions |
| Reader who turns pages one-handed | Kobo Libra Colour or Sage | Button layout and the exact model generation |
| Reader who writes on books and documents | Kobo Sage/Libra Colour or a Kindle Scribe model | Pen inclusion, compatible files, writing area, and export workflow |
| Screen-reader or braille user | The model and book edition whose accessibility details meet your needs | Publisher-supplied labels, reflowable versus fixed layout, and VoiceView or other supported tools |
The short answer remains habit-based: Kindle is usually the smoother continuation of an Amazon-centred library, while Kobo is the stronger candidate for EPUB flexibility, sideloading, and supported library borrowing. The right purchase is the specific model that opens your books, fits your reading environment, and provides only the features you will use.
