Yes—Kmart Australia accepts Afterpay online and in every Kmart store, including K hubs. Online purchases can use Afterpay for eligible orders up to A$2,000 and are repaid in four instalments over six weeks. In stores, you pay by adding an Afterpay Card from the Afterpay app to Apple Pay or Google Pay and tapping at the terminal. Approval, eligibility checks, late fees and Afterpay’s own terms still apply.

This answer is specific to Kmart Australia. Kmart’s United States payment page lists cards and gift cards but does not list Afterpay, so the Australian policy should not be assumed to apply in the US.

What “Kmart accepts Afterpay” means

Kmart Australia publishes Afterpay as an accepted payment method for its website, shopping app and physical stores. The arrangement is a payment facility supplied by Afterpay Australia Pty Ltd, not a credit product operated by Kmart itself. Kmart states: “Please note that Afterpay is not a service provided by Kmart. It is a facility offered by Afterpay Australia Pty Ltd.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your purchase must satisfy both retailers’ checkout rules and Afterpay’s approval decision. Seeing Afterpay listed at checkout does not guarantee that a particular order will be approved, and a verified identity does not guarantee approval either.

Quick answer to the common questions

  • Can you use Afterpay online at Kmart? Yes, at Kmart Australia, for eligible orders up to the published A$2,000 online limit.
  • Can you use Afterpay in a Kmart store? Yes. Kmart says all Australian stores, including K hubs, accept it through an Afterpay Card in a digital wallet.
  • How are online purchases repaid? The standard schedule is four instalments over six weeks.
  • What is needed? Australian residency, age 18 or older, an accepted Australian debit or credit card, verifiable contact details and legal capacity to enter a contract. Afterpay still decides whether to approve the transaction.
  • Are there fees? Kmart says there are no extra fees when payments are made on time. Missed payments can trigger the late fees described in the current Afterpay terms.

Australia and the United States are different

Country is the first thing to check because Kmart operates separate payment policies.

Location What the published policy says Practical implication
Kmart Australia Afterpay is listed for online orders, the Kmart app and all stores, including K hubs. Australian shoppers can try Afterpay online or use an Afterpay Card in a digital wallet in store, subject to approval.
Kmart United States The published payment-method page lists gift cards and Mastercard, Visa and Discover. It does not list Afterpay. Do not assume an Australian Afterpay account or process will work at a US Kmart. The omission is not an explicit statement that Afterpay is prohibited, so check the payment options shown for your specific US order or store.

The detailed instructions below therefore apply to Kmart Australia and Australian residents. A Kmart website ending in a different country domain, a local store terminal or a different account region can present different payment choices.

Using Afterpay online at Kmart Australia

For a normal website order, Afterpay appears as a payment choice at checkout when the order and account are eligible. Kmart’s published online ceiling is A$2,000 per order, subject to Afterpay’s terms and approval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Online checkout steps

  1. Add the products you want to your Kmart Australia cart and proceed to checkout.
  2. Enter the required delivery and contact details, then select Afterpay as the payment method.
  3. Kmart redirects you to Afterpay. Log in to an existing account or register if you are new to the service.
  4. Review the instalment schedule and the total amount, then authorize the purchase. The standard plan divides the eligible order into four instalments over six weeks.
  5. Return to Kmart’s confirmation page and save the order number. Afterpay shows the repayment schedule in its own account or app.

The A$2,000 figure is an order maximum published by Kmart Australia, not a promise that every customer can spend that amount. Afterpay can approve a lower amount, decline the transaction or require a different payment method.

Before you confirm the order

Check that the cart total, delivery details and account region are correct before selecting Afterpay. Read the amount and date of each instalment in the Afterpay screen rather than relying only on the headline total. If the checkout sends you back to Kmart without an order number, look in both accounts before trying again so you do not accidentally create a duplicate authorization.

The limit applies to the online order, not necessarily to the value of every item you can find on the site. An order below A$2,000 can still be refused if Afterpay’s approval rules, account status or verification requirements are not met.

What happens after checkout

Afterpay controls the repayment schedule and account notifications. Kmart remains responsible for fulfilling the order and applying its own delivery, cancellation and returns rules. Keep both the Kmart order confirmation and the Afterpay plan until the order is complete or any return is settled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you need to query a payment, the Kmart order number identifies the purchase while the Afterpay account shows the instalment status. Keeping both references makes it easier to distinguish a fulfilment issue from an approval or repayment issue.

Paying with Afterpay in a Kmart store

Kmart says Afterpay is accepted in all Australian stores, including K hubs. In-store payment uses an Afterpay Card generated in the Afterpay mobile app rather than a barcode or a manually entered account number.

Set up the card before you shop

  1. Open the Afterpay app and locate the Afterpay Card feature.
  2. Follow the app’s instructions to add the card to a supported digital wallet.
  3. Use Apple Pay or Google Pay, depending on the wallet and phone you have configured.
  4. Before joining the checkout queue, confirm that the wallet shows the Afterpay Card and that your phone’s contactless payment is enabled.

Setting up the card before reaching the register avoids having to complete account or wallet steps while other customers are waiting. Make sure you can authenticate on the phone and that the wallet is using the Afterpay Card, not another saved card.

Complete the in-store payment

  1. At the register, open the digital wallet containing your Afterpay Card.
  2. Authenticate on the phone if requested, then hold it near the contactless terminal.
  3. Wait for the terminal’s approval before leaving. If the transaction is declined, the Afterpay app or terminal should provide the next action; Kmart staff cannot override Afterpay’s approval decision.

Kmart’s instructions say the first instalment is due at purchase and later instalments are scheduled every two weeks. Afterpay’s own Kmart guidance also describes using the Card through a digital wallet for in-store purchases.

There is no separate Kmart in-store ceiling stated on the cited policy page. That does not mean an unlimited purchase is available: the amount approved for your account and the transaction rules still control the sale.

Eligibility and approval requirements

Kmart’s published requirements are Australia-specific. You generally need all of the following:

  • Residence in Australia.
  • Age 18 or older.
  • An Australian debit or credit card that Afterpay accepts.
  • A valid, verifiable email address and Australian mobile number.
  • The legal capacity to enter a binding contract.

Credit checks and identity verification apply. Meeting every listed requirement only makes you eligible to apply; it does not guarantee that Afterpay will authorize a particular order. Approval can vary by account history, the transaction and Afterpay’s current risk rules.

Why an otherwise eligible order can fail

  • The account has an unpaid or overdue instalment.
  • The card on file is expired, blocked, unsupported or has insufficient available funds for the scheduled payment.
  • The requested transaction exceeds the amount Afterpay is willing to approve at that moment, even if it is below Kmart’s published A$2,000 online ceiling.
  • Contact details or identity information cannot be verified.
  • The order, device or checkout session triggers an additional security check.

Only Afterpay can explain or change an approval decision. Retrying repeatedly with different personal details can create further verification problems; use the account’s support channel instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An Australian shopper who is under 18, does not have the required Australian card or cannot provide verifiable contact information should use another Kmart payment method. Kmart’s listing of Afterpay does not waive those account conditions.

Instalments, late fees and the real cost

Kmart says there are no extra fees for using Afterpay when every instalment is paid on time. The service is still a scheduled payment obligation: the first amount is collected according to the plan, and later instalments are taken automatically from the linked card.

Situation Published Kmart Australia information What to do
Online repayment plan Four instalments over six weeks for an eligible order. Check the exact dates and amounts in Afterpay before confirming checkout.
In-store repayment plan First instalment due at purchase; subsequent payments every two weeks. Keep sufficient funds available on the linked card on each due date.
All instalments paid on time No extra Afterpay fee stated by Kmart for on-time use. Still monitor your bank account and Afterpay schedule.
Missed payment Kmart’s page publishes an initial A$10 late fee, with another A$7 added seven days later if the amount remains outstanding. Check the current Afterpay terms before relying on these figures; payment terms can change.

The late-fee amounts are policy figures published by Kmart Australia, not an independent statistic or a guarantee that every account will be charged identically. Afterpay’s current terms govern the account, so read the fee notice attached to your transaction.

Budgeting for the schedule

Four instalments means the purchase is spread across four scheduled collections, but it is not free money or a discount. Plan for the first payment at checkout and for each later payment on its stated date. A card that works today can still be declined later if it expires, is replaced or does not have enough available funds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Returns, exchanges and refunds

Afterpay does not replace Kmart’s Returns Policy. Kmart says an item bought online with Afterpay can be taken to a local Kmart store for an exchange or refund, provided the return meets the policy and is not covered by an exclusion.

How to return an online Afterpay purchase

  1. Check Kmart’s current Returns Policy for the product category, condition, proof-of-purchase and time-limit requirements.
  2. Take the item and your order details to a local Kmart store. The store assesses the return under Kmart’s policy.
  3. For an approved refund, Kmart sends the refund through the original payment route. Kmart’s returns FAQ says an Afterpay refund is credited to the shopper’s Afterpay account.
  4. Check Afterpay for the revised instalment schedule. A refund may reduce or cancel future instalments, while a partial refund can leave a remaining balance.

A store exchange is handled under Kmart’s rules; it does not automatically erase an existing Afterpay plan. Keep the return receipt and watch the Afterpay account until the adjustment appears.

Do not stop scheduled payments merely because you have handed an item back. Until the refund or adjustment appears in Afterpay, the original schedule may still show. If Kmart confirms that a refund was processed but the Afterpay account has not updated, contact Afterpay using the order and return references.

Using the Kmart shopping app

Kmart Australia lists Afterpay as a payment option in its shopping app. The process follows the same basic sequence as the website: add eligible products, select Afterpay at payment, sign in or register when redirected, and confirm the instalment plan. The app’s availability of the option does not bypass the A$2,000 online order ceiling, identity checks or Afterpay approval.

Online versus in-store: which route fits?

Feature Online or app Physical store
Where available Kmart Australia website and shopping app. All Kmart Australia stores, including K hubs.
Payment mechanism Select Afterpay at checkout and authenticate through the redirect. Afterpay Card in Apple Pay or Google Pay; tap at the terminal.
Published limit A$2,000 maximum per online order, subject to Afterpay approval. No separate Kmart in-store limit is stated in the cited policy; the approved amount and transaction rules still apply.
Repayment timing Four instalments over six weeks. First instalment at purchase, then every two weeks.
Return route Eligible online items may be returned to a local Kmart store under the Returns Policy. Follow Kmart’s normal in-store returns process; Afterpay adjustments are reflected in the Afterpay account.

Online is useful when you want the instalment schedule displayed during checkout and need delivery. In-store payment is useful when you are already at a Kmart or K hub and have the Afterpay Card ready in a wallet. Neither route guarantees approval, and both remain subject to Kmart’s product and returns rules.

Troubleshooting common problems

Afterpay is missing from online checkout

Confirm that you are on Kmart Australia’s site or app, that the cart is eligible and that the order is within the published online ceiling. Remove items that may have payment restrictions, refresh the checkout and try again. If the option remains absent, Afterpay or Kmart may have restricted that transaction; choose another listed payment method or contact the relevant support team.

The order is under A$2,000 but is declined

The ceiling is not a guaranteed approval amount. Check the Afterpay app for overdue instalments, verify the linked card and review any identity request. Do not assume that increasing the cart to a round number or opening another account will help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Afterpay Card will not tap in store

Open the digital wallet and confirm that the Afterpay Card is present and selected. Check that the phone is unlocked, contactless payments work with another card and the phone has a usable connection if the wallet requires one. Ask the cashier to confirm that the terminal accepts contactless payments, then try once more. If the transaction is still declined, the decision is with Afterpay rather than Kmart.

A refund has not appeared

Keep the Kmart return receipt and verify that the store processed a refund rather than an exchange. Then check the Afterpay account for the adjustment and the remaining instalments. If Kmart confirms the refund but the Afterpay balance does not change, contact Afterpay with the Kmart order and return references.

The card payment later fails

Review the card expiry date, available funds and the payment method saved in Afterpay. Update the card through Afterpay’s account process rather than supplying different details at Kmart checkout. A late payment can also affect account approval and may add fees under the current terms.

Before you choose Afterpay for a Kmart purchase

  • Confirm that you are shopping under Kmart Australia’s policy, not a US Kmart page.
  • Make sure you meet the Australian residency, age, card, contact and contract-capacity requirements.
  • Read the instalment dates in Afterpay before authorizing the order.
  • Budget for the first payment immediately and every later payment on its due date.
  • Remember that a return follows Kmart’s Returns Policy and that the refund is routed to Afterpay.
  • Recheck Afterpay’s current terms for late-fee amounts because the figures published by Kmart can change.
  • Save the Kmart order or return reference and the Afterpay plan until the transaction is fully resolved.

What can change over time

Retail payment partnerships, approval rules, order limits and late-fee schedules are policy details rather than permanent product specifications. Kmart’s Afterpay page, payment FAQ and returns FAQ, together with Afterpay’s Kmart shopping guidance, are the controlling references for a transaction. The figures and procedures described here reflect those pages as accessed on October 13, 2026.

Can I use Afterpay on the Kmart website?

Yes. Select Afterpay at Kmart Australia checkout, sign in or register when redirected, and review the plan. Eligible online orders have a published maximum of A$2,000, subject to Afterpay approval.

How many payments does Kmart Afterpay use?

Online purchases are divided into four instalments over six weeks. For in-store purchases, Kmart says the first instalment is due at purchase and later instalments are scheduled every two weeks.

Who is eligible to use Afterpay at Kmart Australia?

You generally must live in Australia, be at least 18, have an accepted Australian debit or credit card, provide a verifiable email address and mobile number, and be legally able to enter a contract. Afterpay checks applications and can still decline an order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there an in-store Afterpay spending limit at Kmart?

Kmart publishes an A$2,000 maximum for online orders but does not state a separate in-store limit on the cited page. In store, the amount approved for your account and the transaction rules still apply.

Does Kmart charge an Afterpay fee?

Kmart says there are no extra fees when instalments are paid on time. Its page lists an initial A$10 late fee and another A$7 after seven days if a missed payment remains outstanding. Check Afterpay’s current terms because fees can change.

Can I return a Kmart Afterpay purchase?

Eligible online items can be returned to a local Kmart store under Kmart’s Returns Policy and any exclusions. An approved refund is credited to your Afterpay account; an exchange does not automatically cancel the existing payment plan.

Does Kmart US accept Afterpay?

Kmart’s US payment-method page lists gift cards and Mastercard, Visa and Discover but does not list Afterpay. That omission is not an explicit prohibition, so check the payment options for the specific US order or store rather than relying on the Australian policy.
