Yes—Kivy is still a reasonable way to build Android apps in Python in 2026 if its UI model suits your app and its required packages can be built with python-for-android. Kivy documents packaging apps as APK or AAB files, while recommending Buildozer as the simplest starting route. The main caveats are native-extension compatibility and the need to maintain a supported Android build environment.
What Kivy supports on Android
Kivy’s Android guide documents running Kivy applications on Android and packaging them for distribution. Its packaging guide covers creating standalone APK or AAB packages and distributing Android apps through markets, including Google Play. That establishes a documented build path; it does not mean every Python project or package will work without adaptation.
Kivy’s documentation describes Android API access through Pyjnius and Plyer, and its guide includes logcat-based debugging. These are relevant when an app needs Android-specific capabilities or when diagnosing behavior on a device. The exact API access and dependencies your project needs should be checked before you commit to the framework.

Start with Buildozer
Kivy recommends Buildozer for new users because it automates preparation of Android SDK/NDK and python-for-android dependencies. A typical documented workflow is to initialize configuration with buildozer init, edit buildozer.spec to describe the app and its requirements, then run a debug build and deploy it to a connected device.

- Install Buildozer on a supported build host.
- From the project directory, run
buildozer initto createbuildozer.spec. - Set the application details and Python requirements in
buildozer.spec; verify that every required compiled dependency has a compatible recipe. - Build, deploy, and launch a debug version with
buildozer android debug deploy run. - For distribution, follow Kivy’s release guidance to create a release AAB and complete the required signing and alignment steps.
This is the documented workflow, not a guarantee that a particular project will build unchanged. Buildozer prepares the Android dependencies and invokes the python-for-android packaging toolchain.
Choose the manual route only when needed
You can use python-for-android directly instead of Buildozer if you need more control over packaging. The trade-off is more manual Android toolchain setup. For a first project, Buildozer’s automation is usually the more straightforward documented entry point.

Check dependencies before choosing Kivy
The most consequential compatibility check is whether your app depends on Python packages that require compilation. Buildozer’s specifications warn that a Python extension requiring compilation will not work unless it has a python-for-android recipe. A package’s availability on desktop Python is not enough to establish that it can be included in an Android build.

- List the app’s direct and transitive dependencies.
- Identify packages that include compiled extensions or otherwise need native build support.
- Confirm that compatible
python-for-androidrecipes exist for the dependencies you actually need. - Build and test a small Android package early, before investing in the full application.
If a required compiled dependency lacks a recipe, treat that as a project-level blocker or a signal to investigate an alternative implementation. The documentation does not establish that every such package can be made compatible with a simple configuration change.

Plan for the build host and release work
Buildozer’s installation documentation lists Linux and macOS for Android targeting and directs Windows users to use WSL. It also says Buildozer is tested on Python 3.10 and above; this is Buildozer’s stated testing baseline, not a promise that every combination of packages and toolchain versions will work.
Release packaging takes more than producing a debug build. Kivy’s guide describes creating a release AAB and completing signing and alignment steps before distribution. Teams should account for maintaining the build environment and release process as part of the choice, rather than treating Android packaging as a one-time export.

Decide whether Kivy fits your app
Kivy is a reasonable choice when you want to build the app’s interface with Kivy and can satisfy its Android dependency requirements. Before choosing it, evaluate the product and team against these questions:
- Interface: Does Kivy’s own widget approach fit the experience you want to create?
- Android capabilities: Can the APIs and device behaviors your app needs be reached through the documented Android access options and supported dependencies?
- Dependencies: Do your required compiled packages have
python-for-androidrecipes? - Build ownership: Can your team maintain a Linux/macOS or WSL build environment and its release workflow?
- Platform-specific behavior: How much Android-specific work and ongoing maintenance will the app require?
The available documentation supports Kivy’s Android packaging route and describes its tooling and dependency constraints. It does not establish that Kivy is faster, cheaper, more performant, more native-looking, or easier to maintain than Kotlin/Java or other Python mobile approaches. Those comparisons require project-specific evaluation.

What the compatibility claim does—and does not—mean
Kivy’s Android guide says Kivy applications can run on devices with OpenGL ES 2.0 and gives Android 2.2 as the minimum. The same page reports that Google says this requirement is met by 99.9% of devices. Kivy’s page does not date that percentage or link to the underlying Google source, so it should not be read as a verified measure of Android device compatibility in 2026.
