For a kitchen recessed light with a replaceable screw-base lamp, a dimmable BR30 LED reflector bulb is a useful category to consider—not a universal fit or a tested “best” model. First check whether your fixture takes a replaceable bulb or uses an integrated LED module. Then match the product’s base and dimensions, brightness, color, dimmer compatibility, and fixture rating to your setup. An integrated downlight needs a compatible retrofit kit, not a screw-in bulb.

What kind of bulb goes in recessed lights?

The fixture determines what to buy. Some recessed cans have a socket for a replaceable reflector bulb; others use an integrated LED module. Remove or inspect one existing lamp and check its markings, base, diameter, and the fixture label before buying. LED replacements can be wider around the base than older incandescent bulbs, so a bulb with the right nominal shape may still be too large for a tight can. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) cautions that some LED lamps do not fit smaller fixtures. DOE light-bulb purchasing guidance

BR30 LED reflector bulbs are a relevant option for some kitchen recessed lights: an Environmental Protection Agency presentation shows that type of bulb in a kitchen context. That example does not establish that every recessed can accepts a BR30. Check your fixture before choosing by shape alone. EPA specialty-bulb presentation

If there is no replaceable bulb socket, shop for a retrofit trim or downlight kit compatible with the can’s diameter and connection. ENERGY STAR describes certified recessed downlight retrofit kits as designed for downlight applications. ENERGY STAR recessed-lighting guidance

How bright should kitchen recessed lights be?

Compare brightness by lumens, which measure light output, rather than watts, which measure electrical input. DOE uses 800 lumens as an example of similar output from products with different power use. In its 2023 comparison, the 800-lumen examples used 5.5 W for the best-available model, 11 W for the ENERGY STAR model, and 18 W for the less-efficient model. Those are comparison examples, not a prescription for how many lumens your kitchen needs. DOE light-bulb purchasing guidance

For downlights, ENERGY STAR’s current criteria set minimum initial output by aperture: 345 lumens for apertures no larger than 4.5 inches and 575 lumens for apertures larger than 4.5 inches. These are product-certification thresholds, not recommended totals for a kitchen. Room size, fixture count and spacing, ceiling height, surface finishes, and task lighting all affect the result. What color temperature is best for kitchen recessed lights?

Color temperature, or CCT, is expressed in kelvin (K). Lower values look warmer or more yellow; higher values look whiter or bluer. ENERGY STAR describes 2200–3000K as warm, incandescent-like light; 3500–4100K as whiter light; and 5000–6500K as bluer white. For a kitchen, 2700K or 3000K is a warmer choice, while 3500K or 4000K looks more neutral to white. Neither range is a universal winner: consider your existing lighting and how the color looks with your finishes. ENERGY STAR LED bulb buying guidance

Does CRI matter for kitchen bulbs?

Color rendering index (CRI) describes how a light source renders colors; it is not a measure of brightness. ENERGY STAR’s current downlight criteria require Ra of at least 80 and R9 greater than zero. DOE likewise says ENERGY STAR-qualified light bulbs require CRI of 80 or higher. Treat CRI as one comparison point alongside CCT and fit, rather than assuming that a higher listed number proves a bulb will look better in every kitchen. ENERGY STAR downlight key product criteria DOE light-bulb purchasing guidance

Are LED recessed bulbs dimmable?

Some are, but a “dimmable” label does not guarantee that a bulb will work well with every wall dimmer. Check compatibility information from the exact bulb or downlight maker against your installed dimmer. ENERGY STAR’s criteria for certified downlights define dimming from full output to at least 20% output and include a noise criterion at the minimum setting; that certification standard does not establish compatibility with every installed dimmer. Check heat, insulation, and location ratings

  • Enclosed fixtures: Check the lamp’s specifications for enclosed-fixture use. DOE warns that fully enclosed fixtures trap heat and raise the temperature in which lamps operate, which can affect LED performance and life. DOE light-bulb purchasing guidance
  • Insulation contact: For a new downlight where insulation touches the fixture, ENERGY STAR says to choose Type IC. Its guidance says non-IC models usually need at least 3 inches of clearance from insulation. Follow the fixture’s own installation instructions. ENERGY STAR recessed-lighting guidance
  • Wet or damp areas: If the light is in a location that may be wet or damp, verify the specific retrofit’s location rating rather than assuming all downlights are suitable.

How to compare a bulb with a retrofit kit

Use the fixture type to narrow the purchase, then compare specifications that apply to that product category. A BR30 replacement lamp and an integrated downlight retrofit are different products, so there is no meaningful one-to-one “best bulb” comparison between them.

What to check Replaceable LED reflector lamp Integrated-downlight retrofit
Fixture and connection Confirm lamp shape, base, diameter, and clearance in the existing socket and can. Confirm can aperture, retrofit dimensions, and connection compatibility.
Light quality Compare lumens, beam distribution, CCT, and CRI where reported. Compare lumens, distribution, CCT options, and color-rendering specifications.
Dimming and conditions Check the specific bulb against the installed dimmer and verify enclosed-fixture suitability. Check the retrofit’s dimming information, insulation requirements, and wet/damp-location rating if relevant.
Long-term specifications Check the listed rated life and warranty for the exact model. Check rated life and warranty; ENERGY STAR downlight criteria specify a 25,000-hour minimum L70 life, plus a minimum warranty of 3 years for certified products with replaceable drivers and 5 years for those with non-replaceable drivers.

L70 is the point at which light output has fallen to 70% of its initial level. The ENERGY STAR life and warranty figures above are certification criteria, not a guarantee of the service life or warranty of every product on the market. ENERGY STAR downlight key product criteria

A practical pre-purchase checklist

  1. Inspect one existing light and determine whether it has a replaceable bulb or an integrated LED module.
  2. Record the current lamp’s shape and base, or the can’s aperture and connection for a retrofit; measure clearance where needed.
  3. Choose a lumen output and CCT that suit the room and coordinate with nearby lighting.
  4. Compare CRI and, for downlights, R9 where reported.
  5. Check exact dimmer compatibility and confirm enclosed-fixture suitability, insulation clearance, and location rating as applicable.
  6. Compare rated life and warranty for the exact product, and verify current certification and availability before ordering.
