Kirigami turns a flat sheet into a three-dimensional structure by combining planned cuts with folds. The cuts interrupt the sheet’s continuous constraints, allowing connected facets to rotate, open and deform; the cut geometry, remaining connections, folds and material determine the final shape and motion.

What kirigami changes about a flat sheet

Origami relies primarily on folding a continuous sheet. Kirigami adds deliberate cuts to that folding logic. A cut is not merely decoration: it changes which parts of the sheet remain mechanically constrained. Once a pattern divides the sheet into facets connected at selected edges or corners, those facets can rotate in-plane or out-of-plane while deforming comparatively little.

That is why a sheet can pop up, stretch, twist or adopt several stable shapes. A continuous sheet resists many of these motions because neighboring material must move together. A slit removes part of that constraint. The new freedom is useful only when the pattern is designed so that the remaining connections guide the motion instead of causing a tear, collision or locked configuration.

Kirigami therefore describes a design approach rather than one universal pattern. Cut shape, length, spacing, direction and the location of uncut bridges all affect the available movement. Adding folds introduces another rotation mechanism around a shared edge, while a cut can let a panel rotate around a small connection or node.

A broad review of cut-based structures explains how these geometric choices produce unusual deformation and functional behavior in materials and devices. Tao, Khosravi, Deshpande and Li’s review (collected in 2023) covers mechanical principles, fabrication approaches and applications beyond paper craft.

How cuts and folds produce three-dimensional form

1. Cuts release selected constraints

Imagine a sheet as a network of panels. Uncut regions force adjacent panels to share motion; a slit separates them so one panel can rotate relative to another. The sheet still has connected material, but its motion is no longer that of one rigid surface. A pattern with many small facets can distribute movement across the sheet, whereas a few long cuts can create larger flaps or bands.

2. Facets and connections define the kinematics

The solid regions between cuts act as facets. Their shapes determine how they meet when the structure is opened. The narrow material left between cuts acts as a bridge, hinge-like connection or compliant region. Moving a bridge changes the axis about which a facet rotates and can redirect motion through the rest of the pattern.

3. Folds add another rotation axis

A fold prescribes a bend along a line. When a fold is combined with cuts, a facet may rotate around an edge while neighboring facets rotate around nodes or other edges. This combination can create pop-up forms, curved surfaces and coupled motions that a cut-only pattern would not produce.

4. Material turns geometry into actual behavior

Paper, polymer film, metal foil and printed elastomers do not bend or stretch in the same way. Thickness, stiffness, friction, residual stress and the quality of a cut affect whether a theoretical motion appears in practice. A pattern that opens easily in thin paper may need rounded cut ends, compliant hinges or a different scale in a thicker engineered sheet.

A practical design workflow

The following sequence is a teaching framework for exploring a design. It is not a guaranteed engineering recipe: a real structure needs geometric checks, clearance checks and, when performance matters, mechanical analysis.

  1. Define the target. Decide whether the goal is a shape, such as a raised panel or tube, or a motion, such as extension, twisting, buckling or switching between stable states. A shape target and a motion target can lead to very different patterns.
  2. Choose a starting pattern and sheet. Begin with a simple repeated motif or a small number of panels. For a first paper prototype, ordinary paper is a practical demonstration medium because it is inexpensive and easy to cut and fold. No single paper weight, finish or brand is established as mandatory for kirigami.
  3. Decide what must stay connected. Mark the bridges, hinges or corner nodes that will transmit motion. Removing too much material can separate the structure; leaving too much can prevent deployment.
  4. Predict the motion before cutting. Sketch the intended rotation of each facet. Check whether neighboring panels will overlap, whether a fold has room to close, and whether the opening path is physically possible. A flat pattern can look plausible yet lock when two panels meet.
  5. Make a small prototype. Cut cleanly, crease the intended folds and open the sheet gradually. Record where it bends, stretches, buckles or tears rather than forcing it into the target form.
  6. Adjust one variable at a time. Change slit length, spacing, bridge width, fold position or sheet thickness, then compare the motion. This makes it easier to identify whether geometry or material is responsible for a failure.

A simple paper pop-up demonstration

A basic pop-up illustrates the mechanism without pretending to be an engineered pattern. Draw a rectangular panel inside a larger sheet. Cut along three sides of the rectangle, leaving the fourth side uncut as a hinge. Score or lightly crease the hinge, then fold the panel through the opening. When the surrounding sheet is bent or folded, the panel rises out of the plane.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The three cuts free the panel from the surrounding sheet; the uncut side controls its rotation. Changing the panel’s width, hinge location or fold angle changes its height and the direction in which it stands. If the panel collides with the surrounding sheet, shorten it or alter the fold rather than forcing the paper. Rounded cut ends and gradual opening can reduce accidental tearing in a thin sheet.

This demonstration shows why a craft result should not be treated as a universal engineering specification. An engineered version would need defined loads, cycle life, tolerances and material properties, followed by analysis and testing.

Hexagonal lattices: one useful design framework

A hexagonal lattice is a documented way to organize cuts and folds, not the only kirigami pattern and not a universal beginner template. A 2014 account from the University of Pennsylvania describes rules for cutting and folding a hexagonal grid while preserving its proportions. The team used combinations of basic modules to create channels, gates and steps, then combine those modules into larger forms. The Penn Today report explains that the rules can be applied across scales, while the finished behavior still depends on sheet and fabrication details.

Randall Kamien described the attraction of modular rules this way: “If there are standards for the size of folds and cuts, we can make the math apply to any length scale. We can make channels, gates, steps and other 3-D shapes without needing to know anything about the size of the sheet and then combine those building blocks into even more complex shapes.” This is a statement about that team’s lattice construction method, not a claim that every kirigami design scales without modification.

Toen Castle noted that the connected centers of the hexagons form triangles, giving the pattern two interlocking lattice descriptions. Shu Yang also pointed to the ease of filling space with a hexagonal lattice when moving from two dimensions to three. These observations explain why hexagons recur in this design framework; they do not make hexagonal geometry inherently superior for every material, load case or target motion.

Choosing between common design routes

Design route How motion is introduced Typical objective Key constraint
Cut-only Slits separate facets and allow relative rotation or deformation Stretching, twisting, buckling or deployable surfaces Remaining bridges must guide motion without tearing or locking
Cut-and-fold Slits provide additional freedom while creases rotate facets around shared edges Pop-up forms and compound three-dimensional shapes Fold angles and panel clearances must be compatible with the cuts
Paper prototype Hand cutting and folding reveal the basic kinematics Fast, low-cost exploration of a pattern Paper behavior does not predict an engineered material exactly
Engineered structure Patterned material, compliant hinges or assembled parts deliver a specified response Architected materials, devices and robots Thickness, fabrication tolerances, fatigue and material properties must be characterized

Paper, tools and material selection

For a first demonstration, select paper that can hold a crease yet can be cut cleanly. The important variables are practical: sheet thickness, grain or fiber direction, surface coating and the precision of the cutting tool. Thin paper opens with little force but can tear at narrow bridges; heavier stock holds a pop-up more firmly but may require wider connections and stronger folds.

There is no evidence for one required paper specification. Treat paper as a prototyping medium and tune the pattern to the sheet you actually have. Keep bridges wide enough for the intended handling, avoid forcing a locked fold, and test a small section before committing to a large repeat pattern.

Engineered kirigami uses whatever material and process fit the intended performance. Methods discussed in the technical literature include cutting and folding as well as 3D printing, molding and assembly. For a flexible device, the cut may be made in a polymer film; for a load-bearing or repeatedly cycled structure, fatigue, hinge compliance and cut-edge stress become central design concerns.

What governs performance in engineered kirigami

The 2025 review “Kirigami Engineering: The Interplay Between Geometry and Mechanics” emphasizes that geometry and mechanics cannot be separated. Factors include symmetry, geometric compatibility, convexity, slit shape, cut spacing relative to sheet thickness, and whether cuts are combined with folds. These variables influence stiffness, deformation modes and whether a structure can reach the intended configuration.

Designers may use theoretical analysis for an idealized pattern, surrogate models to explore many variations, finite-element simulation for detailed stress and deformation, and experiments to validate the result. Fabrication constraints then determine whether the analyzed geometry can be cut, printed, molded or assembled accurately. A pattern that is kinematically possible in a zero-thickness model may fail when real facets have thickness and collide.

Common failure modes and adjustments

  • The sheet tears at a bridge: increase the bridge width, round the cut termination or reduce the opening force.
  • The structure will not deploy: inspect for panels that overlap, folds that demand incompatible angles or connections that are too stiff.
  • The form deploys unevenly: check for inconsistent cut lengths, skewed folds, material grain effects or variation in thickness.
  • The pattern works once but degrades: evaluate fatigue at hinges and bridges; paper prototypes are not evidence of long service life.
  • The modeled shape cannot be fabricated: add material thickness and tool-clearance checks, then redesign the smallest features that the chosen process cannot reproduce.

Where kirigami is used beyond paper

Architected materials and metamaterials

Planned slits can give a sheet shape change, unusual extension, controlled buckling or multiple stable states. These are engineered responses that depend on the exact pattern and material; a decorative paper sample does not demonstrate the same load capacity or durability.

Flexible electronics and soft robotics

Kirigami patterns can let a conductive or elastomeric layer stretch and conform while concentrating deformation in designed regions. Reviews of the field describe kirigami as a platform for responsive structures, flexible electronics and soft robotic components. Device performance still depends on electrical routing, encapsulation, hinge fatigue and manufacturing tolerances in addition to the cut layout.

An inclined-cut cylindrical structure

In a specific example released by the University of Osaka on June 5, 2026, researchers made periodic parallel inclined laser cuts in polyester sheets, rolled the sheets into cylinders and mechanically tested them. The cylinders twisted when stretched, and the team analyzed the behavior in terms of chirality. Lead author Isamu Hashiguchi said, “We were able to characterize the mechanical properties of these kirigami structures in terms of their chirality.” The Osaka release describes this particular structure; it is not a claim that all inclined cuts or rolled kirigami cylinders behave identically, nor a commercial product specification.

How to judge a kirigami pattern

  • Start from the intended motion: ask which facets must rotate, stretch or remain fixed.
  • Trace every connection: identify whether each bridge acts as a hinge, a flexible link or a load path.
  • Check the deployed path: look for collisions, self-intersections and folds that cannot close.
  • Match scale to material: cut spacing and feature size must be meaningful relative to sheet thickness and tool precision.
  • Prototype before optimizing: use paper to expose kinematic mistakes, then test the actual engineering material for strength, fatigue and repeatability.

The central design lesson is simple: cuts create freedom, folds direct rotation, and the remaining material determines how that freedom is expressed. Three-dimensional kirigami succeeds when those choices are planned as one mechanical system rather than added as decoration after the fact.
