How is it built, and what do its numbers mean?
Kiprun says the shoe combines a J-shaped carbon Hook Plate with a soft, PEBA-based Featherbounce core surrounded by denser TPU Fluid Foam. The brand says the plate and geometry are intended to add propulsion and stability and smooth the heel-to-forefoot transition. These are manufacturer descriptions of the design and its intended effects, not independent proof of how every runner will experience it.

The two weight figures are close but come from different sources and reporting conventions, so they should not be treated as the same measurement. The 83% Responsiveness Index is a brand-specific score, not a standardized independent rating.

What does the ride feel like?
RTINGS rated cushioning 8.2, roll 8.3, energy return 7.9, bounciness 7.5, and snappiness 6.9 on its own scales. It describes notable cushioning and a smooth, pronounced rocker that guides transitions. The figures are RTINGS ratings, not universal performance standards; the reviewer’s written findings are more useful for understanding the trade-off: the shoe rolls assertively, but its narrow base and aggressive shape can feel unstable, particularly as fatigue compromises form.
RTINGS gave stability 5.6 on its scale. That rating reinforces the distinction between a shoe that can feel smooth in forward motion and one that offers a broad, reassuring base. If your race-day form remains efficient and you like a forceful rocker, the ride may suit you. If you commonly need a steady platform late in a race, the design is a meaningful risk rather than a minor caveat.

How does the Kipstorm Lab fit?
RTINGS rated the fit 7.9 for true-to-size and describes it as broadly true to size, though somewhat long, with a snug arch. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee across foot shapes. Try the shoe with your usual race socks and check both the toe clearance and pressure over the arch before committing to a race. The available evidence does not establish a width range, so runners who need a specific width should confirm current sizing options with the retailer rather than assume a wider version exists.

Can you race a marathon in it?

The available evidence does not establish a universal distance cutoff or prove that the shoe is appropriate for every marathoner. How does it compare with the Kipstorm Elite?
RTINGS describes the Kiprun Kipstorm Elite as a more approachable, stable option than the Lab. That distinction is useful if you like the brand’s racing line but want a platform that asks less of your balance and form. RTINGS also compares the Lab with the adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 2 and ASICS Metaspeed Ray, but those comparisons do not amount to a complete or current market ranking. Choose by ride and stability needs rather than assuming the Lab’s lightness alone makes it the better racer.
What does it cost, and what should you check before buying?
Decathlon US listed the Kipstorm Lab at $350 on October 7, 2026, and its page displayed 15 reviews. Price, sizes, and stock can change; confirm the current listing before purchase. Check the Decathlon US product page for current availability. At that price, fit and intended use deserve particular scrutiny: this is a specialized racing shoe with a demanding feel, not a low-risk everyday trainer.

What does the record claim establish?
Kiprun says Jimmy Gressier wore the Kipstorm Lab when he ran a 12:57 European 5K record in Lille in March 2025, becoming the first European to break 13 minutes on the road. That is the brand’s account of the result; it does not establish that the shoe alone caused the performance. Kiprun also writes, “The KIPSTORM LAB features two patent-pending technologies.” The brand’s page provides its construction and record claims.
