Kioxia’s LD4 is an enterprise E1.L SSD series built for high-density servers and read-intensive data-center storage. The headline capacity needs a qualification: Kioxia lists 15.36TB and 30.72TB models, while its validated architecture enables capacities of up to 122.88TB. The company says the drives are sampling to selected customers; it has not announced general availability or pricing.
What Kioxia announced
The LD4 Series is Kioxia’s first E1.L SSD based on BiCS FLASH generation 8 QLC. The announcement positions it for hyperscale data centers, especially high-density 1U servers and read-intensive storage applications. Kioxia’s October 9, 2026 announcement describes the series and its product specifications.
QLC is the flash type, while E1.L is the drive’s enterprise form factor. Kioxia says QLC is compelling for read-intensive applications that need high capacity. That is the vendor’s rationale for the design, not an independently reported LD4 performance result.

Not according to the announced capacity points. Kioxia lists 15.36TB and 30.72TB models; 122.88TB is the maximum capacity its validated architecture enables, not a listed model that the announcement says is currently available. Kioxia defines TB in decimal bytes and notes that formatted capacity can vary.

Kioxia says LD4 drives are sampling to selected customers. Its announcement does not give a general availability date or price, so the sampling status should not be read as an open retail launch.
Interfaces and standards
Kioxia specifies PCIe 5.0 at up to 16 GT/s x4, NVMe 2.0e compliance, support for the OCP Datacenter NVMe SSD Specification v2.6, and a single-port design. These standards and interface details identify the host connection; on their own, they do not establish measured drive speed or suitability for a particular server.

What E1.L means for server fit
E1.L belongs to the Enterprise and Datacenter Standard Form Factor (EDSFF) family. Kioxia’s E1 form-factor overview describes the E1.L symmetric enclosure as 9.5mm thick, 38.4mm wide, and 318.75mm long. Those dimensions describe the form factor, not universal compatibility: confirm the specific server chassis, backplane, and platform support before planning deployment. Kioxia’s EDSFF E1 overview states that its information is believed accurate as of October 2025 and may change.
Features described for other E1 designs should not automatically be attributed to LD4. For example, Kioxia’s E1.S information about thermal options and hot-plug serviceability is not a product-specific claim about this E1.L series.

What the announcement does not establish
The announcement does not provide an LD4 endurance rating, power draw, general availability date, price, or measured performance results. PCIe 5.0 and NVMe compliance are not substitutes for comparable workload benchmarks. Before evaluating the drive for a deployment, a buyer would need to confirm the details that matter for its platform and workload:
- Which capacity points can actually be ordered, rather than enabled by the architecture.
- Chassis and backplane compatibility, along with any platform requirements.
- Endurance and power and thermal characteristics for the specific model.
- Measured read and write performance under test conditions comparable to the intended workload.
- Availability and pricing through the relevant sales channel.
Why Kioxia is targeting read-intensive storage
Neville Ichhaporia, senior vice president and general manager of Kioxia America’s SSD business unit, described QLC as a fit for read-intensive AI workloads because of their capacity and read-performance needs. This is Kioxia’s explanation of the product direction, not LD4 benchmark data. KIOXIA America’s October 8, 2026 release includes the statement and identifies the product’s intended market.

When to expect more information
Kioxia said it would showcase the LD4 Series at the OCP Global Summit in San Jose from October 12–15, 2026. The announcement establishes that planned showcase, but does not promise that additional specifications, pricing, or a launch date would be disclosed there.
