The Kioxia CM9-R 15.36TB is a PCIe 5.0 enterprise NVMe SSD built for an E3.S bay—not a consumer M.2 upgrade. It pairs high rated sequential throughput with a read-intensive 1 drive write per day (DWPD) endurance rating. It makes the most sense when your server supports E3.S and your workload is read-heavy; sustained write-intensive work calls for a higher-endurance alternative.
What the CM9-R 15.36TB is—and what it is not
Kioxia describes the CM9-R E3.S family as a read-intensive enterprise SSD. The 15,360 GB model uses BiCS FLASH 3D TLC generation 8 and supports PCIe 5.0 and NVMe 2.0. Kioxia lists artificial intelligence and machine learning, business intelligence, data warehousing, online transaction processing, and software-defined storage and virtualization as target applications. Those are application categories, not a guarantee that a drive will meet a particular system’s performance or endurance requirements. Kioxia CM9-R Series (E3.S) Product Brief
The reviewed design is a 7.5 mm E3.S drive. It needs a compatible bay and host; its capacity and interface do not make it physically interchangeable with an M.2 SSD or every 2.5-inch drive. Kioxia’s 2.5-inch family has different capacity options, so check the exact form factor rather than assuming that CM9-R models fit the same chassis. StorageReview’s CM9-R review

| Test type | Kioxia rating | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 128 KiB sequential read | Up to 14,800 MB/s | KIOXIA Corporation, 2025; single-port 1×4 mode |
| 128 KiB sequential write | Up to 11,000 MB/s | KIOXIA Corporation, 2025; single-port 1×4 mode |
| 4 KiB random read | Up to 3,400K IOPS | KIOXIA Corporation, 2025; single-port 1×4 mode |
| 4 KiB random write | Up to 540K IOPS | KIOXIA Corporation, 2025; single-port 1×4 mode |
Sequential bandwidth and random IOPS describe different access patterns. Large sequential transfers can benefit from high bandwidth, while small random operations are relevant to other workload mixes. Actual results depend on the host, software, block size, queue depth, and test method; the published maxima should not be read as a single performance level that applies to every job. What independent reviews measured
ServeTheHome: sequential bandwidth and test conditions
ServeTheHome published its review on October 5, 2026, identifying its sample as KCM9XRJE15T3 with firmware 15ETE105. On an Intel Xeon w9-3495X system running Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, it used fio 3.42 with io_uring direct I/O. Each data point ran for 300 seconds after a 30-second ramp period; its random-test ladder reached outstanding I/O 2048. In 128K sequential sweeps, it measured 14.9 GB/s read and 11.3 GB/s write. These are results from that setup, not guarantees for another system. Its comparison drives ranged from 1.6TB to 7.68TB, below the CM9-R sample’s 15.36TB capacity, which limits direct comparisons across the chart. ServeTheHome review and test methodology

StorageReview: low-queue-depth findings
StorageReview’s September 2, 2026 review identifies its 15.36TB sample as KCM9XRJE15T3 and reports that the model had the lowest low-queue-depth latency in its comparison group across the workloads it tested. That is a finding within its test set, not a universal ranking. The review also describes PCIe 5.0 x4 operation with dual-port x2 support, NVMe 2.0 and NVMe-MI 1.2c, and 25W typical active power. It lists power-loss protection and end-to-end data protection as standard for the family, with SIE, SED, and FIPS 140-3 SED security variants in its model matrix; verify the protections and security option for the exact SKU you order. Why review results can differ
Vendor ratings and independent measurements are not interchangeable. Test setup, workload, queue depth, and comparison set affect the numbers and what they reveal. ServeTheHome’s sequential figures are close to Kioxia’s published ratings, but that does not mean every workload will reproduce them. StorageReview’s low-queue-depth latency finding addresses a different aspect of performance. TweakTown, in its September 18, 2026 review, reported 56°C after two loops of 128K sequential-write preconditioning using conventional air cooling. That temperature comes from its test conditions and should not be treated as a general operating temperature. TweakTown’s specification table gives a different model identifier from the identifiers reported by StorageReview and ServeTheHome, so it does not independently confirm the reviewed SKU. TweakTown review
Is 1 DWPD enough for your workload?
Kioxia rates the E3.S CM9-R at 1 DWPD, meaning its endurance class is read-intensive. Before selecting it, estimate the amount of data your workload writes over time, including background activity such as logging, indexing, and data transformation. A workload dominated by reads can be a better fit than one that continuously writes or rewrites large volumes. A high peak write-bandwidth rating does not change the drive’s endurance class.

Kioxia’s separate CM9-V family is rated at 3 DWPD and is positioned for mixed-use workloads. It is not simply the same drive with a higher endurance number: capacity and performance options differ. Compare the precise model’s specifications against your write workload and capacity target rather than assuming the families are otherwise interchangeable. Kioxia CM9-R product brief StorageReview’s CM9-R review and family comparison
ServeTheHome says the CM9-R performed strongly in its mixed-workload tests, while noting that the write-focused CM9-V may perform better in some write-heavy comparisons. StorageReview describes the 15.36TB model as the CM9-R capacity with its best write specifications. Neither observation makes the read-intensive CM9-R a universal choice for write-intensive use.

What to verify before ordering
- Physical fit: Confirm the system has an E3.S bay that accepts the reviewed 7.5 mm form factor.
- Host support: Check PCIe 5.0 and NVMe support, lane and port topology, and whether the platform supports the drive’s required configuration. If dual-port operation matters, confirm support end to end rather than relying on a family-level description.
- Cooling: Confirm the chassis provides airflow appropriate for an enterprise PCIe 5.0 SSD. Review temperatures are tied to specific test setups.
- Workload endurance: Compare expected writes with the 1 DWPD rating; consider the separate 3 DWPD CM9-V family if your workload is mixed-use or write-heavy.
- Protection and security: Verify power-loss protection, end-to-end data protection, and the required security variant against the exact ordered SKU.
- Identity and support: StorageReview and ServeTheHome identify their samples as KCM9XRJE15T3; ServeTheHome lists firmware 15ETE105. Confirm the SKU, warranty terms, and support with the seller or manufacturer. ServeTheHome lists a five-year warranty for its sample; the extracted Kioxia brief does not establish that warranty term.
The reviews do not establish a qualified server compatibility list, current street price, or regional stock status. Confirm those details with the system vendor and seller before procurement.
