Short answer: Kingdom Hearts follows Sora, a young Keyblade wielder who loses his home, travels between connected worlds with Donald Duck and Goofy, protects those worlds from darkness, and searches for Riku and Kairi. Prequels and side stories expand that personal quest into a conflict spanning generations of Keyblade wielders, ancient wars, memory, and Master Xehanort’s attempt to reshape the worlds.

Spoiler warning: The explanation below discusses major identities, turning points, and the ending of Kingdom Hearts III. If you are starting the series, read the “what order should I play?” section first and stop before the marked spoiler sections.

What is the Kingdom Hearts story?

The saga begins when Sora’s home world is swallowed by darkness. He receives a Keyblade, a weapon that can fight darkness and lock or unlock the paths between worlds. Sora is separated from his friends Riku and Kairi, then joins Donald Duck and Goofy on a search that has two goals: find his friends and protect the worlds they visit.

Each world is a real place in the series’ fiction, not merely a replaceable level. Sora travels through Disney-inspired settings and original locations, meets people whose problems are specific to that world, and confronts enemies connected to the wider struggle over hearts, darkness, and the Keyblade. The official Birth by Sleep manual describes the structure this way: “Within each world, the story will unfold as you meet characters who need your help, or encounter enemies who must be stopped.”

The personal and cosmic plots gradually merge. Sora’s search for Riku and Kairi leads into a history that includes ancient Keyblade wielders, the Keyblade War, Organization XIII, and Master Xehanort’s plan to trigger another war. The numbered games tell Sora’s main journey, while prequels explain why the people and conflicts around him already exist.

Who are the key Kingdom Hearts characters?

Sora

Sora is the central protagonist and the character through whose travels most players learn the setting. He starts as a boy from a small home world and becomes a Keyblade wielder after that world is lost. His defining objectives remain practical and personal: protect worlds from darkness, locate Riku and Kairi, and help the people he encounters. His relationships give the large mythology an emotional anchor.

Riku and Kairi

Riku and Kairi are Sora’s closest friends, separated from him at the beginning of the first Kingdom Hearts. Riku’s choices become central to the saga and give him a major role of his own rather than leaving him as a simple missing friend. Kairi is also important to the larger conflict; in Melody of Memory, she serves as the storyteller looking back over the preceding adventures.

Donald Duck and Goofy

Donald and Goofy accompany Sora during the original journey. They are his traveling companions, combat partners, and a bridge between the Disney side of the setting and the original characters’ story. Their presence also establishes the series’ unusual tone: serious questions about identity and darkness share space with familiar Disney worlds and humor.

Terra, Ventus, and Aqua

Birth by Sleep moves the focus to three young Keyblade wielders: Terra, Ventus, and Aqua. Their separate paths become entangled with Master Xehanort’s plans. Because their story occurs about ten years before Sora’s first adventure, it explains relationships, injuries, and unresolved conflicts that the later games otherwise present as mysteries.

Master Xehanort

Master Xehanort is the antagonist who gives the Dark Seeker arc its long-term shape. Dark Road follows his youth and training as a Keyblade wielder; later stories show him pursuing a plan to bring about another Keyblade War. His role is therefore both personal and historical: he is an individual opponent for Sora’s allies and the force connecting many eras of the timeline.

Roxas and Organization XIII

The middle entries broaden the cast with Roxas and Organization XIII. Their stories use the series’ recurring questions—what makes a person, how memories define identity, and what happens when a heart is separated from a body—to reframe events that Sora experienced earlier. These games are not optional flavor if you want to understand why Kingdom Hearts II and later installments treat memory and identity as central plot mechanics.

How are the Kingdom Hearts worlds connected?

The worlds are distinct locations joined by routes that can be opened, closed, or corrupted by darkness. Sora’s original task is to travel from world to world and seal keyholes, helping prevent darkness from entering or spreading through them. The worlds can resemble settings from Disney films, but the series also includes original places built around its own mythology.

A world usually performs one or more of three story functions:

  • Personal character story: A location may reveal something about Sora, Riku, Kairi, or another Keyblade wielder, or force a character to make a consequential choice.
  • Disney-world adaptation: Sora enters a familiar setting, meets its characters, and helps resolve a crisis shaped by that world’s own plot.
  • Original conflict: A setting may advance the struggle over hearts, darkness, the Keyblade, or Xehanort’s larger plan.

These functions overlap. A Disney setting can also reveal information about the original conflict, while an original location can contain the emotional payoff for a character introduced elsewhere. The official timeline names locations such as Scala ad Caelum, Castle Oblivion, and Twilight Town, but those examples are not a complete list of the series’ worlds.

Think of the world map as a network rather than a sequence of unrelated stages. Sora’s movement connects local problems to a shared threat, and events in one world can affect how characters understand another. That is why the series can move from a Disney story to an original Keyblade mystery without treating the two as separate universes.

Kingdom Hearts timeline in chronological order

The following is a high-level in-universe chronology. It explains when the stories occur, not the order a newcomer must play them. Several entries reveal information designed to be understood after earlier games.

Era or game What it contributes
Ancient χ era The earliest period shown in the official timeline. It involves the Foretellers, the Master of Masters, and events surrounding the original Keyblade War.
Dark Road Follows Xehanort’s youth and training as a Keyblade wielder, providing background for the antagonist who later drives the Dark Seeker conflict.
Birth by Sleep Set about ten years before the first game. Terra, Ventus, and Aqua become involved in a plot tied to the Keyblade War and Master Xehanort.
Kingdom Hearts Sora loses his home, receives the Keyblade, travels with Donald and Goofy, searches for Riku and Kairi, and seals keyholes to protect worlds from darkness.
Chain of Memories Continues Sora’s journey through Castle Oblivion while making memory and its reliability explicit parts of the story.
358/2 Days Follows Roxas and Organization XIII, expanding the events around Sora’s absence and the series’ questions about identity.
Kingdom Hearts II Returns to Sora’s adventure and develops the consequences of the earlier games, including the conflict with Organization XIII.
Re:coded Uses a data-based framing to investigate what remains unresolved after the main events.
Dream Drop Distance Prepares the heroes for the final confrontation with Xehanort and sets up the next phase of the conflict.
Kingdom Hearts III Brings the Dark Seeker arc to its climax as Sora and his allies seek seven guardians of light to oppose Xehanort.
Re Mind Adds another story taking place around the climax of Kingdom Hearts III; it is not a replacement for the base game’s campaign.
Melody of Memory Uses Kairi’s recollection to retell earlier adventures, then adds new story material after them. It is a rhythm-action game rather than a conventional mainline action RPG.

The ancient χ stories reach furthest back, while Sora’s numbered adventures provide the main through-line most players recognize. The prequels are valuable because they answer “how did this happen?” questions, but their chronological position does not automatically make them the best first experience.

What order should you play Kingdom Hearts in?

There is no single officially mandated first-play order in the material summarized here. Chronological order and release or collection order serve different purposes. Chronology places ancient history and prequels first; a newcomer-friendly sequence usually follows the order presented by a specific collection so that reveals arrive in the way the games were designed to present them.

A practical first pass

  1. Start with Kingdom Hearts Final Mix. This establishes Sora, Riku, Kairi, Donald, Goofy, the worlds, keyholes, and the basic meaning of the Keyblade.
  2. Play Re:Chain of Memories. It directly follows the first game and introduces the memory-related ideas that later stories use.
  3. Continue with Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix. It pays off the opening games and develops Roxas and Organization XIII.
  4. Use 358/2 Days and Re:coded where your edition places them. Some collections present these entries as cinematic summaries rather than fully playable campaigns, so check the format before buying.
  5. Play Birth by Sleep Final Mix. This is the major prequel about Terra, Ventus, and Aqua and gives essential context for the later arc.
  6. Play Dream Drop Distance. It prepares the heroes and the player for the final Dark Seeker confrontation.
  7. Finish with Kingdom Hearts III, then Re Mind. Re Mind tells additional story around the game’s climax.
  8. Play Melody of Memory afterward. Treat its first function as a recap through Kairi’s perspective, followed by its new story material.

If you instead choose strict chronology, begin with the ancient χ-era material, then Dark Road, Birth by Sleep, and the original game. That approach foregrounds the history of the Keyblade and Xehanort, but it can remove mysteries that the release-oriented path expects you to discover later. Choose based on whether you value historical sequence or the series’ original reveal order.

Spoiler guide: how the Dark Seeker arc fits together

Major spoilers for the central arc follow. The ancient Keyblade era establishes that the conflict is older than Sora. Xehanort’s youth in Dark Road shows the formation of the person who will later pursue a new Keyblade War. In Birth by Sleep, Terra, Ventus, and Aqua are drawn into that plan roughly a decade before Sora’s story, creating connections that the original game only hints at.

Sora’s early adventure then becomes one part of a multigenerational struggle. The middle games explore the consequences through memory, Roxas, Organization XIII, and data, while Dream Drop Distance prepares the surviving heroes for a final confrontation. In Kingdom Hearts III, Sora and his allies work to assemble seven guardians of light against Xehanort. Square Enix identifies Kingdom Hearts III as the conclusion of the Dark Seeker arc; Re Mind adds a story set around the climax rather than restarting the saga from the beginning.

Platform and cloud-version checks

Square Enix’s June 2026 support notice says Switch cloud versions stopped being sold on June 9, 2026, while remaining playable until June 9, 2027. The same notice discusses Nintendo Switch 2 digital versions and says the physical KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] is not eligible for the cloud-owner digital discount. Those dates and conditions apply to the specified Switch products; they should not be generalized to other platforms.

Before purchasing, confirm four details on the listing: the platform and region, physical cartridge or disc versus digital or cloud delivery, the included titles, and whether the entries are games or video summaries. Prices and availability change, so the collection name alone is not enough to identify what you will receive.

Why the story feels complicated

  • Multiple eras: Ancient Keyblade history, Xehanort’s youth, the prequel generation, and Sora’s present all matter.
  • Identity mechanics: Hearts, bodies, memories, data, and replicas are recurring story devices, so one character’s name or appearance does not always represent a single straightforward identity.
  • Nonlinear releases: Prequels and side stories were released between numbered games, not all before them.
  • Mixed presentation: A collection may provide a playable game for one entry and a cinematic recap for another.
  • Two kinds of continuity: Disney-world plots can stand alone while still advancing the original Keyblade conflict.

The most reliable way to follow the saga is to track three threads at once: Sora’s relationships with Riku and Kairi, the history of the Keyblade wielders, and Xehanort’s attempt to force a new war. Every major era adds information to at least one of those threads.

Kingdom Hearts story: the essential takeaway

Sora’s lost-home-and-friends journey is the entry point, but the Keyblade turns it into a history spanning ancient wars and several generations of wielders. Disney worlds provide local adventures; original locations carry the mythology; and the timeline gradually connects both to Xehanort’s Dark Seeker conflict. Play the core games in the order offered by your chosen collection for the clearest first set of reveals, then use the chronological map to understand where the prequels and ancient-era stories fit.
