If Kingdom Hearts crashes, will not launch, shows a black screen, or ignores your controller, start by identifying the PC release. The Windows 10/11 version accepts XInput gamepads only, while the Steam version accepts both XInput and DirectInput. The repair steps and controller settings therefore depend on the storefront.
For crashes and startup failures, follow Square Enix’s sequence: get the PC online, update the game and graphics driver, restart, then reinstall if necessary. Steam players should also validate the game installation. For controller trouble, match the pad’s input standard to the release and remember that Square Enix describes controller support as partial, so keyboard and mouse can still be needed for some menus.
First identify your Kingdom Hearts PC version
Before changing drivers, buying a controller, or editing Steam settings, establish which release is installed. Open the launcher you use and note whether the game is the Windows 10/11 version or a Steam product. This distinction is the most important branch in the controller diagnosis.

Square Enix separately identifies Xbox controllers, PlayStation DualShock controllers, PlayStation DualSense controllers, and Steam Input controllers as partially supported on PC. “Partial” does not mean every button, menu, feature, or model is guaranteed to work. Some navigation may require a keyboard and mouse even when gameplay input works.

Kingdom Hearts crashes or will not launch: the official order
There is no published single root cause that explains every Kingdom Hearts crash or startup error. Use the following order so that simple, reversible checks happen before a reinstall or a support case.
1. Confirm the PC is online and the game is current
- Connect the PC to the internet and let the launcher finish any pending update.
- Start the game only after the update has completed. If the launcher offers a manual update or download queue, check that it is not paused.
- Close the game and launcher completely, then restart Windows.
Square Enix’s crash guidance specifically calls for an online PC, the latest game version, an up-to-date graphics driver, and a restart. These checks address outdated software but do not prove that an outdated component is the cause of your particular crash.
2. Update the graphics driver, then restart again
Install the current driver supplied for your graphics hardware through the manufacturer’s normal update channel. Reboot after installation rather than launching immediately from the installer. A driver update can change the graphics runtime used at startup, so test the game after the reboot before making other changes.
If the game still closes, freezes, or produces a black screen, continue to the storefront-specific checks instead of assuming the driver update failed.
3. Validate the installation if you own the Steam version
Square Enix’s Steam-specific guidance covers crashes, failure to start, and black screens by asking you to validate the installation. Use this procedure only for the Steam release; it is not the identical menu path on every other storefront.

- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the Kingdom Hearts game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files. Some Steam interface versions have called this area Local Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Restart Steam and try the game again.
Steam compares the local installation with the files it expects and replaces files that fail the check. The exact label can change as Steam’s interface is updated, so look for the installation-files page and its verification command rather than relying on an old screenshot.
4. Reinstall when the problem remains
If the game continues to crash after updating, restarting, and (for Steam) validating the installation, Square Enix suggests reinstalling it. Allow the uninstall and download to complete without putting the launcher to sleep or interrupting the connection. After installation, apply pending updates before the first launch.

A reinstall is a repair step, not proof that corrupted files were the original cause. If the same failure returns, collect diagnostics instead of repeatedly reinstalling.
5. Apply Steam’s general Windows launch checks
Steam’s general Windows launch guidance is broader than Kingdom Hearts-specific advice. Use it as a separate checklist:
- Install available Windows updates.
- Update graphics and other relevant hardware drivers.
- Verify the game files as described above.
- Temporarily close non-essential background software that could interfere with launching.
- Check that the computer meets the requirements for the exact Kingdom Hearts product you bought.
- Restart Windows before testing again.
Do not treat a background application as an established Kingdom Hearts cause. The Steam recommendation is a general isolation step: closing non-essential software helps determine whether an interaction is involved.

Targeted branches for common launch symptoms
“Kingdom Hearts crashes on PC” after reaching the menu
Complete the online, update, graphics-driver, and restart sequence first. Steam users should then verify the installation. If the crash persists, reinstall once and test a clean launch before adding overlays or other software back into your normal session. Keep notes about the exact point of failure—immediately after launch, while loading a save, or during a particular scene—because that detail is useful when contacting support.
“Kingdom Hearts won’t launch” or closes immediately
Check that the launcher has finished updating and that Windows is current. Confirm the PC satisfies the requirements for your specific release, then use Steam’s file verification if applicable. If a reinstall does not change the behavior, stop cycling through the same steps and prepare the diagnostic reports Square Enix requests.
“Kingdom Hearts black screen on startup”
For the Steam version, validate the installation through Properties and Installed Files/Local Files. Also update the graphics driver, restart Windows, and check the product’s requirements. The Steam-specific Square Enix article includes black screens in the same validation guidance as crashes and startup failures. It does not establish that every black screen has the same cause, nor does it prescribe one universal display setting.
Check the requirements for the Steam 1.5+2.5 ReMIX collection
Steam publishes the following specifications for KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX-. They are for that named collection, whose Steam listing is dated 2024; do not apply them automatically to every Kingdom Hearts release on PC.

These are published product specifications, not a guarantee that a machine will run every Kingdom Hearts title, nor a statistic about how often crashes occur. If your release is not the Steam 1.5+2.5 ReMIX collection, locate that release’s own store requirements before drawing conclusions from this table.

When to contact Square Enix support
Contact Square Enix after completing the applicable update, driver, restart, validation, and reinstall steps. Explain the release and storefront, the Windows version, the symptom, and the step at which the failure occurs. Square Enix asks for two diagnostic files so support can examine the system configuration.
Create an MSINFO report
- Press the Windows key, type
msinfo32, and open System Information. - Choose the command to save the report.
- Save it as an
.nfofile. - Allow the collection to finish; large reports can take time to complete before the file is ready.
Create a DxDiag report
- Press the Windows key, type
dxdiag, and open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. - Choose Save All Information.
- Keep the resulting text report with your support request.
Attach both files as requested and identify whether the problem is a crash, launch failure, black screen, or input failure. Do not omit the storefront: Windows 10/11 and Steam have different controller standards and different installation menus.
Why your controller is not working in Kingdom Hearts on PC
Controller failures usually fall into three separate questions: which release is installed, which input standard the controller exposes, and whether the desired function is among the features Square Enix describes as only partially supported.
Windows 10/11 release: use XInput
The Windows 10/11 version supports XInput gamepads only. If a pad presents only DirectInput, the game may not recognize it even though Windows can see the device. An Xbox-style controller that explicitly supports XInput for Windows is the logical compatibility choice for this release. That is a compatibility criterion, not certification of a particular model, and it cannot repair a faulty cable, driver, USB port, or game configuration.

The Steam version supports both DirectInput and XInput. That wider standard support does not turn every controller into a fully supported device. Square Enix lists Xbox, DualShock, DualSense, and Steam Input controllers as partially supported and warns that keyboard and mouse may be required for some navigation.

Fix Steam controller input lost while the game is in the background
Square Enix documents a specific Steam scenario: controller input is lost while a Steam game is running in the background. In that case, enable the Steam Controller Settings option that uses the controller as PC controls through Desktop Layout.
- Open Steam’s controller settings.
- Find the option for using the controller as PC controls through Desktop Layout.
- Enable that option and return to the game.
- Test the controller while the Kingdom Hearts window is not the active foreground window.
Steam’s labels and layout can change, so look for the Desktop Layout or PC-controls wording rather than expecting an unchanged menu arrangement. This procedure addresses the documented background-input case; it does not establish a remedy for a controller that never works in gameplay, is incompatible with the Windows 10/11 release, or has a hardware fault.
A practical controller diagnosis
Step 1: test the release without changing multiple variables
Write down the storefront, controller model, connection type, and whether Windows detects button presses. Test one controller at a time. Disconnect other gamepads and input adapters temporarily so you can tell which device the game is receiving.

- For Windows 10/11, use an XInput-capable pad.
- For Steam, test both the device’s native mode and Steam Input where available.
- If a PlayStation pad works only partially, keep a keyboard and mouse nearby for menus that do not accept controller navigation.
Step 3: isolate a background-only failure
If controls work while Kingdom Hearts is focused but stop when another window is active, use the Desktop Layout/PC-controls setting in Steam Controller Settings. If controls fail even when the game is focused, return to the release and input-standard checks rather than treating the background setting as a general repair.
Step 4: separate software compatibility from hardware faults
Try the controller in another Windows application or game that uses the same input standard. A failure there suggests a device, cable, wireless connection, USB port, or driver issue outside Kingdom Hearts. A controller that works elsewhere but not in Kingdom Hearts still needs to be evaluated against the release’s XInput, DirectInput, and partial-support limits.
Choosing a controller for the Windows 10/11 release
If your current pad is DirectInput-only, look for an XInput controller for Windows or an Xbox controller for Windows. Verify the product description states XInput support and check whether it requires a wired connection, a wireless receiver, or additional software. No source establishes that one particular model works across every Kingdom Hearts release, and purchasing a compatible standard cannot fix crashes, corrupted files, or a defective controller.
Steam players have more options because the release accepts DirectInput and XInput, but partial support remains the deciding caveat. Choose based on the functions you need—gameplay, menu navigation, wireless operation, or Steam Input—not merely on whether Windows lists the device.
