For a first playthrough, use this spoiler-conscious sequence: KINGDOM HEARTS Final Mix → Re:Chain of Memories → KINGDOM HEARTS II Final Mix → 358/2 Days → Birth by Sleep Final Mix → Re:coded → Dream Drop Distance HD → χ Back Cover → 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage – → KINGDOM HEARTS III → Re Mind.
That is the best default answer to “what order should I play Kingdom Hearts?” It protects major reveals while giving each later game the context it expects. A literal Kingdom Hearts chronological order is different: several stories take place long before Sora’s first adventure, and the series deliberately reveals that earlier history later.
Recommended Kingdom Hearts play order for a first playthrough
The sequence below follows narrative comprehension and spoiler protection rather than the timeline inside the fiction. It also reflects how the currently available collections present each story. Some entries are full games; others are movies or HD cutscene compilations.
| Step | Game or film | What you experience | Why it belongs here |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | KINGDOM HEARTS Final Mix | Full playable game | Introduces Sora, Donald and Goofy, the Keyblade, and the central conflict between Light and Darkness. |
| 2 | Re:Chain of Memories | Full playable game | Continues directly from the first adventure and sets up the characters and conflicts of KINGDOM HEARTS II. |
| 3 | KINGDOM HEARTS II Final Mix | Full playable game | Continues the main Sora-led arc with the context supplied by the first two entries. |
| 4 | 358/2 Days | HD cutscene compilation in current collections | Viewed after KH II, its information lands as intended without prematurely disclosing later revelations. |
| 5 | Birth by Sleep Final Mix | Full playable game | Moves to an earlier era after you already understand the main cast, stakes and terminology. |
| 6 | Re:coded | HD cutscene compilation in current collections | Optional for momentum, but useful for information that leads into the next phase of the saga. |
| 7 | Dream Drop Distance HD | Full playable game | Places Sora and Riku in the Mark of Mastery exam as preparation for the coming showdown with Master Xehanort. |
| 8 | χ Back Cover | HD movie | Explains the Foretellers and the series’ distant origins before the final run-up to KH III. |
| 9 | 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage – | Short playable episode | Square Enix describes it as a link to KINGDOM HEARTS III, so it works immediately before that game. |
| 10 | KINGDOM HEARTS III | Full playable game | Concludes the central Dark Seeker Saga arc. |
| 11 | Re Mind | Story DLC for KH III | Play after the base game; it occurs around the climax and continues from another perspective. |
Start with Final Mix, not the earliest event in the lore
KINGDOM HEARTS Final Mix is the most accessible entry point. Sora’s first journey establishes the series’ vocabulary—worlds, Keyblades, Heartless, Nobodies, and the role of friendship—without asking a newcomer to know the ancient history first. Square Enix describes the series as action role-playing games developed and published by Square Enix under Tetsuya Nomura’s direction, with a story of Light overcoming Darkness through friendship.

Play Re:Chain of Memories before KH II
Re:Chain of Memories follows the first game. Its card-based combat is substantially different, but skipping it can make the opening and character relationships in KH II feel abrupt. If the combat system is not a good fit, you can use an easier difficulty or watch the story material, but do not skip its narrative entirely on a first run.
Keep 358/2 Days after KH II in a first run
The original 358/2 Days was a playable title, but the version included in the current HD collection is a cutscene compilation. In this recommended order, viewing it after KH II preserves the intended reveal pattern. Treat it as a film-length story presentation rather than expecting a complete playable campaign.
Use Birth by Sleep as backstory, not as your opening game
Birth by Sleep is set in an earlier era and supplies important history for characters and conflicts that the first games introduce from a later viewpoint. Its impact is stronger once you know the main saga’s stakes. The three protagonists’ campaigns can be completed in different orders; follow the game’s own suggested sequence if it provides one, rather than trying to rearrange scenes to create a new chronology.

Do not confuse Re:coded with a full remake
The collection presents Re:coded as an HD cutscene compilation. It is reasonable to treat it as optional when your priority is maintaining momentum, but its story material helps bridge the events leading toward the later games. The compilation format means there is no equivalent full playable version in that package.
Finish the 2.8 material before KH III
Dream Drop Distance HD centers on Sora and Riku taking the Mark of Mastery exam in preparation for the coming confrontation with Master Xehanort. χ Back Cover is a movie about the Foretellers and the origins of the conflict. 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage – is a short episode explicitly positioned as a bridge to KH III. Together they form the lead-in that Square Enix’s 2.8 collection is designed to provide.
Play Re Mind only after the base game
Re Mind is not a replacement opening for KH III. Complete the base game first, then start the DLC so its alternate perspective and climax-adjacent events have the necessary context.

Why release-style order usually beats chronological order
Kingdom Hearts uses prequel stories to add meaning to events you have already seen. Starting with the oldest fictional era can therefore expose identities, motives or connections that the original games expected you to discover later. The recommended route prioritizes two criteria:
Recommended Free Tools
- Spoiler protection: later-released backstory is encountered after the reveals it was designed to explain.
- Narrative comprehension: mechanics, terminology and character relationships build in the same broad progression as the central Sora-led story.
Chronological replay is worthwhile for a second run, a lore study, or a player who values in-universe sequence above reveal timing. It is not a Square Enix-mandated order; it is an editorial recommendation for a first-time reader or player.
Kingdom Hearts chronological order: what can be stated confidently
The broad timeline is clear, but the official English pages reviewed for this guide do not publish a complete written chronology for every console, browser and mobile chapter. In particular, they do not settle the exact position of every chapter of χ, Union χ or Dark Road relative to individual console scenes. Any detailed list that assigns every mobile chapter to a precise point should be labeled a fan-made synthesis, not an official complete timeline.

| Broad era | Story material | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Foreteller and origin era | χ Back Cover and related ancient-history material | Explains the Foretellers and the origins of the conflict. The movie is the clearest collection entry for this era. |
| Mobile-era history | χ, Union χ and Dark Road | Keep these separate from the numbered console sequence. Their broad relationship to the ancient era is known, but the reviewed official pages do not provide a chapter-by-chapter placement. |
| Earlier keyblade-war generation | Birth by Sleep | A prequel-era story involving the generation before Sora’s main adventure. |
| Fragmentary bridge | 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage – | A short episode that connects directly toward KH III. |
| Main Sora-led era | KINGDOM HEARTS, Re:Chain of Memories, KINGDOM HEARTS II, 358/2 Days, Re:coded, Dream Drop Distance, and KINGDOM HEARTS III | These games occupy the later portion of the saga, although individual stories overlap and reveal events from different viewpoints. |
| After the base conclusion | Re Mind | Additional KH III story material around the game’s climax, played after the main campaign. |
This broad chronology answers “where does each era belong?” without pretending that the official sources resolve every mobile chapter’s exact scene-level position.

The official KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] bundles HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind. It is the practical single-product route for the main console-era story, but it is not a set of twelve full playable games.

Square Enix announced the collection for physical and digital release on October 8, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Microsoft Store on Windows. The announcement says the collections are native, non-cloud versions on current-generation consoles, while HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX is also native on Nintendo Switch. Store availability can vary by region. A physical copy requires an internet connection to download additional data, so buying a disc does not mean every byte is installed from the disc alone.

Which order should you choose?
Choose the recommended play order if you are new
Use the 11-step route at the top if this is your first exposure. It balances the original reveal structure with enough background to make KH III understandable.
Choose chronological replay if you already know the twists
A chronology-first replay can begin with the ancient Foreteller material, move through the earlier-era stories, and then proceed into Sora’s era. Because the official material does not provide a complete mobile chapter map, treat the mobile entries as a distinct lore layer rather than forcing them into unsupported exact slots.
Choose a story-only route when gameplay is not your priority
The collection’s cutscene presentations let you experience 358/2 Days and Re:coded without their original gameplay. You can also use easier settings for the playable titles. The important distinction is to preserve the story order, not to pretend that a movie compilation offers the same interactive experience as the original game.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Where KH III and KH IV fit
Square Enix describes the Dark Seeker Saga as spanning from the original KINGDOM HEARTS through KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind. That makes KH III the close of the central Xehanort-focused arc, while Re Mind adds material around its climax. KH IV is a later chapter, not an extra step between KH II and KH III.
Square Enix’s current official listing gives KH IV a late-2027 release window for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. A window is not a guaranteed date; check the listing again when planning a purchase because release information can change.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Starting with the oldest lore: this can spoil discoveries intended for newcomers. Use the recommended route first.
- Calling every collection entry a game: identify 358/2 Days and Re:coded as cutscene compilations, χ Back Cover as a movie, and 0.2 as a short episode.
- Playing Re Mind first: its scenes assume knowledge of the base KH III campaign.
- Assuming the package includes all mobile stories: the listed collection contents do not establish that it contains every mobile installment.
- Using an undated sales claim: Square Enix Holdings reported more than 37 million units in global package shipments and digital sales as of the end of June 2024. That figure includes both measures and that as-of date; it is not an evergreen current total.
Bottom line
Play KINGDOM HEARTS, Re:Chain of Memories, KINGDOM HEARTS II, 358/2 Days, Birth by Sleep, Re:coded, the three 2.8 stories, KINGDOM HEARTS III, and then Re Mind. Save a strict chronology-first replay for after you know the main reveals, and treat mobile-era placement as a broad, qualified lore question rather than a completely settled official list.
