For a first playthrough, follow the order in which the story was introduced, not the fictional chronology. Start with Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, continue through Re:Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, then work through the prequel and bridge stories in the HD collections before playing Kingdom Hearts III and its Re Mind DLC. The series’ timeline reaches back to an ancient Keyblade era, but beginning there removes context that the original games deliberately reveal later.
The recommended Kingdom Hearts order for beginners
This sequence prioritizes the audience’s intended discoveries and the way Square Enix presents the games in its collections. It also identifies whether you play a game or watch a high-definition story presentation.

The position of χ Back Cover is flexible as long as you see it before Kingdom Hearts III. Watching it with the other 2.8 material keeps the collection together; placing it after Birth by Sleep gives you ancient-world context before the finale. Do not treat the table as a claim that every event occurs in this fictional order. It is a first-playthrough route designed around narrative introductions.
Why release presentation works better than strict chronology
The official timeline spans several eras and formats. χ Back Cover reaches into the ancient Keyblade era. Birth by Sleep takes place before Sora’s first adventure, while 0.2 Birth by Sleep follows Aqua in the realm of darkness and leads toward the third numbered game. If you start with those earlier events, you meet characters and ideas before the original game has explained why they matter.

Kingdom Hearts Final Mix is the audience’s entry point: Sora travels with Donald and Goofy while searching for his friends and confronting the spread of darkness. Re:Chain of Memories turns that search toward Castle Oblivion and memory conflicts. 358/2 Days shifts attention to Roxas and Organization XIII, and Kingdom Hearts II resumes Sora’s journey after a year of sleep. Those reveals have more impact when encountered in that order, even though some later entries describe earlier events.
A completely granular chronological list is also misleading. The official timeline includes films, mobile-game narratives, short experiences, and console games rather than a single line of equivalent playable releases. Use chronology as a way to understand the setting after your first run, not as your default starting instruction.
What you actually get in each collection
KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX
Square Enix lists six experiences in this package:

The word “experience” matters. The collection lists 358/2 Days and Re:coded, but those entries are HD cinematic story presentations rather than playable remasters. Plan time to watch them; do not assume that every title named on the box opens as a conventional game.

KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue
This collection contains:
- Dream Drop Distance HD
- 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage
- χ Back Cover
Dream Drop Distance HD and 0.2 are playable experiences. χ Back Cover is a film that presents the ancient Keyblade-era material. The package is therefore a mixture of game and video, not three similarly sized numbered releases.
KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind
This package combines the third numbered game with the Re Mind DLC. Play the main game first and begin the DLC only after reaching its ending; it is additional story content built around the events of Kingdom Hearts III, not a replacement opening chapter.
KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I–III]
Square Enix’s combined collection groups the earlier HD collections with Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind. It is the simplest single purchase route when you want the complete set of experiences represented in those packages, but check the live store listing before buying because platform and regional availability can change.

A step-by-step first playthrough
1. Finish Kingdom Hearts Final Mix before looking up the timeline
Let the first game establish Sora’s relationships, the role of Donald and Goofy, the search for missing friends, and the spread of darkness. Guides that lead with ancient history can identify connections that the opening game expects you to discover gradually.

Continue directly into Castle Oblivion. Its memory conflicts are important preparation for what follows, so skipping it can make later character motivations feel as though they appeared without explanation.
3. Play Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix
This is the next major playable chapter in the recommended presentation order. It resumes Sora’s adventure after a year of sleep and expands the Organization XIII and Roxas threads that the earlier entries introduce.
4. Watch 358/2 Days
Use the HD cinematic version in 1.5+2.5. It centers on Roxas and his time with Organization XIII. Because it is not a playable remaster in the package, treat it as a feature-length story interlude rather than searching for a missing game mode.
5. Play Birth by Sleep Final Mix
This prequel follows Terra, Ventus, and Aqua before Sora’s original adventure. Its earlier setting is easier to understand after you have seen how the later games refer back to it.
6. Watch Re:coded
The 1.5+2.5 version presents Re:coded as HD cinematics. Watch the complete presentation if you want the connective story; you do not need to find a separate playable remaster inside the collection.

7. Play Dream Drop Distance HD
This entry moves the larger saga toward Kingdom Hearts III. Keep it in the route even if your goal is only the numbered games, because the recommended sequence uses it as the bridge into the finale.
8. Play 0.2 Birth by Sleep
0.2 follows Aqua in the realm of darkness and is explicitly framed as connecting toward Kingdom Hearts III. It is short compared with a full numbered chapter, but its placement immediately before the finale gives its transition the intended momentum.
9. Watch χ Back Cover
This film concerns the ancient Keyblade era. Watch it before Kingdom Hearts III, either with the rest of 2.8 or after 0.2. Its function is background and setup, so there is no need to interrupt the opening game to view it first.

Complete the third numbered game before loading the DLC. That preserves the escalation from Sora’s original journey through the prequel and bridge stories into the conclusion of the Dark Seeker Saga.

Collection menus can make every named entry look equivalent, but the formats differ:

Buying and platform considerations
The current Square Enix collection page lists the combined Kingdom Hearts Collection [I–III] for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. That is a publisher-listed platform range for the combined collection, not a guarantee that every individual HD package has the same availability.

Individual collection listings vary. The platform information comes from a Japanese Square Enix product page, so territory, edition names, language options, and storefront availability may differ from what you see locally. Before paying, open the store page for your country and confirm:
- Whether you are viewing the combined collection or a single HD package.
- Which of the listed games are playable and which are cinematic presentations.
- That the edition includes Kingdom Hearts III and Re Mind if you want the complete recommended route.
- That the platform shown is your actual console or PC storefront.
- That the listing is current for your territory rather than an older or imported product page.
Prices, retailer stock, physical formats, and regional catalogs are not fixed by the collection names. Verify those details in the live local listing instead of relying on an old screenshot or a listing from another territory.

First-time player who wants the clearest story
Use the ten-step route above. Play the available games, watch the two cinematic presentations and χ Back Cover, and leave the fictional chronology alone until you have completed Kingdom Hearts III and Re Mind.
Player who already knows the original game
You can still use the same order, but pay particular attention to the connective entries: Re:Chain of Memories, 358/2 Days, Birth by Sleep, Re:coded, Dream Drop Distance, and 0.2. They explain why the numbered games contain characters and conflicts that are not introduced in a single straight line.
Player interested in fictional chronology
Finish the release-oriented run first. On a second pass, use the official timeline to study the ancient Keyblade era, the pre-Sora events of Birth by Sleep, Aqua’s time in darkness, and the later Sora-centered chapters. This gives the chronological material context instead of asking it to introduce characters with no prior relationship to the player.
Player with limited time
Do not remove the entries solely because they are films or shorter experiences. Watch 358/2 Days, Re:coded, and χ Back Cover in their included presentations, then prioritize the playable sequence from Final Mix through Kingdom Hearts III. The collections were designed to keep those stories together even when a conventional remaster was not produced.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Starting with the oldest fictional event
χ Back Cover is set in the ancient Keyblade era, but that does not make it the best introduction. Its historical position and its useful viewing position are different questions.
Assuming every collection entry is playable
1.5+2.5 includes cinematic versions of 358/2 Days and Re:coded. 2.8 includes the film χ Back Cover. Check the format before deciding that a download is missing content.
Putting Re Mind before the main game
The DLC belongs after Kingdom Hearts III. Starting it first disrupts the main game’s intended setup and resolution.

The same broad franchise label can refer to 1.5+2.5, 2.8, Kingdom Hearts III + Re Mind, or the combined [I–III] package. Match the listing to the step you are ready to play and confirm your local platform support.
Treating a sales total as evidence about one title
Square Enix Holdings reported more than 38 million units in global package shipments and digital sales for the series in 2025. That is an aggregate across the franchise, not a sales count for Kingdom Hearts III, the collections, or any other individual entry.
