For a first playthrough, start with Kingdom Hearts Final Mix and follow the series’ release order through Kingdom Hearts III; play the Re Mind expansion only after finishing the main game. The Collection [I–III] brings together three bundles, but some stories are presented as HD cinematics rather than playable games.
Recommended Kingdom Hearts play order for beginners
This is a release-order recommendation for a first playthrough, based on the collection’s contents and presentation. It follows the connected narrative without asking a new player to reconstruct the series’ fictional chronology.
- Kingdom Hearts Final Mix
- Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories
- Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix
- Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days — watch the collection’s HD cinematics; the original playable game is not included here as a full game.
- Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix
- Kingdom Hearts Re:coded — watch its HD cinematics in the collection.
- Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD
- Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage –
- Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover — watch the HD movie.
- Kingdom Hearts III, followed by Re Mind after completing the main game.
The official collection listings establish which bundles and formats are included, but do not prescribe a first-time-player curriculum. This sequence is a practical recommendation, not an official order. In particular, keep Re:Chain of Memories between the first game and Kingdom Hearts II in this path.
What the Collection [I–III] includes
Square Enix describes the package as three collections: KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind. The publisher describes 1.5+2.5 as containing the first six stories, while the bundle listing culminates in Kingdom Hearts III with Re Mind. Xbox’s listing independently identifies the same three components.
#1 Best Overall
- The compilation includes the following games: KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX KINGDOM HEARTS Re:Chain of Memories KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days (HD Remastered cinematics) KINGDOM HEARTS II FINAL MIX KINGDOM HEARTS Birth by Sleep Final MIX KINGDOM HEARTS Re:coded (HD Remastered cinematics)
- KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 FINAL CHAPTER PROLOGUE KINGDOM HEARTS Dream Drop Distance HD KINGDOM HEARTS 0.2 Birth by Sleep –A fragmentary passage– KINGDOM HEARTS χ Back Cover (movie)
- KINGDOM HEARTS III
Playable games and cinematic stories are different formats
The 1.5+2.5 group combines full games with cinematic story presentations. In this collection, 358/2 Days and Re:coded are represented by HD cinematics rather than their original playable games. Watching them conveys story material, but it is not the same experience as playing those games.
What’s in HD 2.8
The 2.8 collection contains Dream Drop Distance HD, 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage –, and χ Back Cover. Nintendo describes 0.2 as a short episode linking toward Kingdom Hearts III, and χ Back Cover as an HD movie. Nintendo’s US listing for the Switch 2 version provides those format details.

- Join Sora, Donald, and Goofy on their journey across the Disney universe
- Contains 9 epic KINGDOM HEARTS experiences; Number of players: 1 player; ESRB content: Fantasy violence, mild blood, mild language, mild suggestive themes, use of alcohol; Genre: Action and adventure; Role playing
- Play through the KINGDOM HEARTS series from the very beginning
- All games remastered in HD
How the story fits together
At a spoiler-light level, the series follows Sora and recurring companions through interconnected worlds and stories, building toward the conflict in Kingdom Hearts III. Square Enix describes the series as a collaboration between Disney and SQUARE ENIX and presents Kingdom Hearts III as the culmination of the collection’s story. The game order above is useful because it lets the narrative unfold through its releases, including the intermediate stories and cinematic entries.

Which edition or platform should you choose?
Choose based on what you already own and where you want to play. Listings refer to distinct platforms, regions, and formats, so a bundle or release announcement for one context does not establish availability in another. Check the current store page for your territory before buying.
Rank #3
- Includes Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 Remix & Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue
- Catch up on the story leading up to Kingdom Hearts III
- Relive the magical adventures of Sora, Donald Duck, Goofy and friends
- PC: Square Enix’s Steam announcement says all three collections can be played on PC and Steam Deck devices. See the Steam announcement.
- Switch 2: Nintendo’s US store lists HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue with an October 8, 2026 release date and notes a 50% discount for eligible owners of the Switch cloud version. Confirm current release status and discount eligibility on the listing. This is a listing for 2.8, not evidence that every collection is available on Switch 2.
- Xbox: The Xbox listing describes the Collection [I–III] bundle and mentions a platform-exclusive Keyblade with purchase. Check the current listing for availability and terms.
- Physical PS4: Square Enix announced a European PS4 physical All-In-One Package as a 10-title compilation for release on June 12, 2025. That announcement does not establish current stock or availability outside that edition and region.
Before choosing, check the platform and performance or format you want, physical versus digital availability, your territory’s current listing, whether you need all three collections or only one component, and whether the specific bundle includes Re Mind. The separately named European PS4 All-In-One Package should not be assumed to match every Collection [I–III] listing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the collection a good starting point?
It is a practical starting point if you want the main connected series in one package and are comfortable alternating between playable games and cinematic story entries. It is less suitable if your priority is to play every story in its original game format: the collection’s presentations of 358/2 Days and Re:coded are cinematics, not full playable versions.
