The better alternative depends on where you get ebooks and how you borrow them. Kindle is the practical choice when your library and purchases are already in Amazon’s Kindle store. Kobo is the stronger alternative when you want direct support for common ebook files, built-in library borrowing where your country and library support it, or physical page-turn buttons on selected models.
Amazon refreshed its Kindle range in October 2026, so comparisons written before that announcement may have outdated model names, specifications, and prices. The figures below are manufacturer specifications and US listing prices accessed in October 2026, not independent test results or guaranteed transaction prices.
Kindle or Kobo: the short answer
Choose the ecosystem that matches your book sources first; screen size and storage are secondary. Purchases in one store do not automatically transfer to the other, and a library’s ebook catalog may not be available on every device.
| If you care most about… | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Keeping an existing Amazon ebook library and account | Kindle | Your purchases, reading position, and Kindle services remain in one ecosystem. |
| Opening supported EPUB and other files directly on the reader | Kobo | Kobo lists EPUB, EPUB2, EPUB3, PDF, FlePub, and MOBI support for its e-readers. |
| Borrowing from a public library | Usually Kobo, subject to eligibility | Selected Kobo models integrate with OverDrive and Libby in specified countries; your local library and title catalog still determine what you can borrow. |
| Built-in physical page-turn buttons | Kobo | Libra Colour and Sage are listed with buttons. Kindle offers a Bluetooth remote or a button-equipped cover for selected models instead. |
| Colour reading or stylus annotation | Kobo Libra Colour or Kindle Colorsoft | Both companies offer colour models; Kobo specifically lists Libra Colour stylus compatibility, while Amazon’s 2026 range includes Colorsoft models. |
That is a decision guide, not a claim that one brand is universally better. The right choice changes if your books come from a store, a library, or your own files.

What changed in Amazon’s 2026 Kindle range
Amazon announced a redesigned Kindle lineup in October 2026. Its announcement lists the following US starting prices and manufacturer specifications:
| Model | Announced US price | Storage | Screen or lighting details | Other stated details |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle | $149.99 | 16 GB | 6-inch display | Up to six weeks of battery life, according to Amazon |
| Kindle Paperwhite | $199.99 | 16 GB | Adjustable warm light | Waterproof |
| Kindle Colorsoft | $289.99 | 16 GB | Colour display | Coloursoft range announced for 2026 |
| Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition | $249.99 | 32 GB | Auto-adjusting front light | Pogo-pin dock charging |
| Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition | $319.99 | 32 GB | Auto-adjusting front light | Pogo-pin dock charging |
See Amazon’s announcement for the announced range and specifications: Amazon’s October 2026 Kindle announcement. The prices are US announcements, not worldwide prices, and Amazon can change availability or pricing.
Amazon’s earlier announcement described a Paperwhite with a 7-inch display and up to three months of battery life. That information belongs to the earlier generation; do not apply those size or battery figures to the refreshed 2026 Paperwhite without checking its current product listing.
Kindle page-turn accessories
Amazon lists Kindle Click, a $34.99 Bluetooth page-turn remote, as compatible with the new Kindle devices and Kindle models from 2024 or later. It also lists a $79.99 physical-button Page-Turn Cover for the Paperwhite Signature Edition and Colorsoft Signature Edition. Neither accessory is the same as having page-turn buttons built into the reader: the remote is separate, and the cover is limited to specified Signature models.
What Kobo currently offers
Kobo’s US lineup page lists five current models. Three are especially relevant to a Kindle comparison because their core specifications and prices are stated clearly:
| Model | US listing price | Screen | Storage | Controls and notable features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kobo Clara BW | $159.99 | 6-inch Carta 1300 monochrome display | 16 GB | Waterproof; compact monochrome reader |
| Kobo Clara Colour | $179.99 | 6-inch colour display | 16 GB | Compact colour Kobo |
| Kobo Libra Colour | $259.99 | 7-inch colour E Ink display | 32 GB | Physical page-turn buttons; Kobo Stylus compatibility; waterproof; adjustable reading controls |
| Kobo Sage | Not stated | Not stated on the cited listing | Not stated | Listed as a larger-screen or writing-focused option with page-turn buttons |
| Kobo Elipsa 2E | Not stated | Not stated on the cited listing | Not stated | Listed for readers wanting a larger screen or writing features |

Kobo’s Libra Colour product page describes an ergonomic design, waterproofing, repairability, adjustable reading controls, physical page-turn buttons, and Kobo Stylus compatibility. It also states: “Borrow eBooks directly from your local library with OverDrive and Libby integration⁶.” That sentence does not mean every library, country, or title is supported; the restrictions are explained below. Details are on the Kobo Libra Colour product page.
Where your books come from matters more than the logo
Existing Kindle purchases
If most of your books were bought through Amazon, Kindle minimizes friction. The device connects to the Kindle account holding those purchases, and you can continue using the associated Kindle reading service. Moving to Kobo does not move those purchases automatically. A title’s licensing and DRM can prevent it from being opened on a different platform even when you legally bought it.
Existing Kobo purchases
A Kobo reader is the straightforward choice for books already bought from Kobo. Switching to Kindle does not automatically import that library. Before changing ecosystems, identify which books are store purchases, which are DRM-free files, and which are library loans; they have different portability rules.
Personal documents and downloaded files
Kobo lists EPUB, EPUB2, EPUB3, PDF, FlePub, and MOBI among the formats supported by its e-readers. Its support documentation also notes that Adobe DRM-protected EPUB or PDF files may require Adobe Digital Editions for transfer. See Kobo’s supported file formats.
Amazon lists EPUB as a supported personal-document type through Send to Kindle. That is a different workflow from buying a book in the Kindle Store: you send a compatible document to your Kindle account rather than treating every EPUB as a native store purchase. DRM can still restrict what you can send or read. Amazon’s supported document types are listed in its Send to Kindle help page.
Therefore, the old statement “Kindle cannot read EPUB” is too broad. A more accurate distinction is that Kobo advertises direct e-reader support for several listed formats, while Kindle accepts EPUB in a personal-document sending workflow. Neither platform guarantees that every DRM-protected file will be portable.

Library borrowing: useful, but never assume it will work
Kobo’s built-in Libby/OverDrive support is model- and country-limited. Kobo names the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand for this feature. Its compatible-model list includes Libra Colour, Clara Colour, Clara BW, Elipsa 2E, and several earlier devices.
Before choosing a Kobo for library reading, verify three separate conditions:
- Your country is supported. Being able to buy a Kobo in a country does not by itself establish that built-in OverDrive access is available there.
- Your library participates. Kobo cautions that Libby may not be available through a particular local library.
- Your desired titles are in the catalog. A library may offer some ebooks through its digital service while a particular title is unavailable through that library or Kobo.
Use Kobo’s library-borrowing instructions to check your region, device, and account process before purchase. Do not treat “Kobo supports library borrowing” as a promise that every Kobo works with every library.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Kindle library lending is not interchangeable with Kobo’s OverDrive workflow. Your library’s own app, catalog, country rules, and Kindle availability determine whether a loan can be sent to a Kindle. Confirm the exact title and device support with the library rather than assuming that a loan available on one platform is available on the other.
Displays, lighting, colour, and controls
Monochrome reading
For novels and other text-heavy books, both brands offer monochrome readers. Amazon’s 2026 entry Kindle is a 6-inch, 16 GB model, while Kobo’s Clara BW is a 6-inch, 16 GB monochrome reader with a Carta 1300 screen and waterproofing. The stated US prices are $149.99 for the announced Kindle and $159.99 for Clara BW; availability and promotions can change.
Colour reading
Amazon’s refreshed range includes Colorsoft and Colorsoft Signature Edition. Kobo lists Clara Colour and the larger Libra Colour. Colour E Ink is useful for covers, diagrams, comics, children’s books, and highlighted notes, but compare the exact model’s screen and lighting specifications rather than assuming all colour readers behave alike.

Warm light and automatic adjustment
The announced Kindle Paperwhite includes adjustable warm light. The Paperwhite Signature Edition adds an auto-adjusting front light. Kobo’s Libra Colour page describes adjustable reading controls, but the cited listing does not establish that every Kobo model has the same lighting behavior. Check the individual model page for the controls you need.

Physical buttons are a decisive difference for readers who dislike tapping or swiping. Kobo lists built-in buttons on Libra Colour and Sage; Libra Colour places them on an ergonomic body and supports landscape or portrait-style reading controls as described on its product page. Kindle’s 2026 announcement instead describes optional accessories: Kindle Click for remote page turns and a button-equipped cover for specified Signature models. A remote or cover adds cost and another object to carry, while Kobo’s buttons are part of the reader.
Water resistance and durability claims
Amazon describes the announced Paperwhite as waterproof. Kobo lists Clara BW and Libra Colour as waterproof, and the Libra Colour page also discusses repairability. These are manufacturer claims; follow each model’s care instructions and do not infer that an unlisted model has the same protection.
Storage and battery: read the qualification attached to each number
Storage is stated as 16 GB for the 2026 Kindle, Paperwhite, Colorsoft, Clara BW, and Clara Colour. The announced Signature Editions provide 32 GB, as does Kobo Libra Colour. Actual free space is lower after system software, and the number of books, comics, audiobooks, or PDFs you can store depends on file size.
Amazon says the new 6-inch Kindle can last up to six weeks on a charge. That is an estimate from the manufacturer under its test conditions, not an independent measurement. The older “up to three months” Paperwhite claim belongs to an earlier generation and should not be transferred to the refreshed model.

These are announced or listed US prices, not a global price list. Taxes, sales, bundles, promotions, regional editions, and stock can change what you pay. For Kobo, verify the live listing at Kobo’s US lineup page; for Kindle, verify Amazon’s current product page after the October 2026 refresh.
Account for accessories
A Kindle setup that relies on Kindle Click adds $34.99, and the specified Page-Turn Cover adds $79.99. Kobo Libra Colour’s stylus is an optional accessory even though the reader is stylus-compatible. Include the accessory you actually need when comparing total cost; do not compare a bare Kindle with a fully equipped Kobo bundle.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which readers should choose Kindle?
- Your purchases are mainly in Amazon’s Kindle Store. Staying with Kindle avoids an unnecessary account and DRM transition.
- You want the refreshed Paperwhite feature set. The announced 2026 Paperwhite combines 16 GB, adjustable warm light, and waterproofing; the Signature Edition adds 32 GB, an auto-adjusting light, and dock charging.
- You already use Kindle personal documents. Send to Kindle supports EPUB as a personal-document type, although that does not make every DRM-protected file transferable.
- You prefer a lower announced entry price. Amazon lists the 2026 Kindle at $149.99 in the United States, subject to change.
- You do not need built-in buttons. Kindle Click or a supported cover can add page-turn control, but those are separate purchases rather than integrated controls.
Which readers should choose Kobo?
- You regularly manage your own EPUB, PDF, or MOBI files. Kobo explicitly lists those formats, along with EPUB2, EPUB3, and FlePub, for its e-readers.
- Your local library and country support Kobo’s OverDrive/Libby integration. Confirm both the library and the titles before buying.
- You want physical page-turn buttons built into the device. Libra Colour and Sage are the relevant listed models.
- You want colour with buttons and stylus support. Libra Colour combines a 7-inch colour screen, 32 GB, physical buttons, waterproofing, and Kobo Stylus compatibility.
- You want a compact monochrome Kobo. Clara BW provides a 6-inch Carta 1300 display, 16 GB, and waterproofing at the listed US price of $159.99.
Common mistakes when switching ecosystems
Assuming purchases transfer
A Kindle purchase is not automatically a Kobo purchase, and a Kobo purchase is not automatically a Kindle purchase. Inventory your books before selling or resetting the old reader. Keep lawful DRM-free files backed up, and check the retailer’s or publisher’s rules for any protected title.
Recommended Free Tools
Confusing format support with DRM support
Seeing “EPUB” in a specification does not guarantee that every EPUB file will open. Adobe DRM may require Adobe Digital Editions on Kobo, and Kindle’s EPUB support is described for personal-document delivery through Send to Kindle. DRM is a licensing layer, not merely a filename extension.
Buying for library use without checking the library
Library catalogs differ by institution, country, and title. Confirm your library card works with the relevant service, search for a few books you actually read, and verify that your chosen model is on Kobo’s compatible list if you are relying on built-in Libby/OverDrive access.
Using old reviews for 2026 Kindle decisions
The October 2026 refresh changes the reference point for Kindle model names, prices, and specifications. A review that describes an earlier 7-inch Paperwhite or its “up to three months” battery estimate may be accurate for that generation but not for the newly announced device.
A practical buying process
- List your three main book sources. Mark each title as an Amazon purchase, Kobo purchase, library loan, or personal file.
- Check portability before comparing hardware. Look for DRM, the retailer account involved, and whether the file is a supported personal document.
- Verify library eligibility. Check your country, library, card, and desired titles against Kobo’s documented restrictions or your library’s Kindle instructions.
- Choose the control scheme. Pick built-in Kobo buttons, a touch-only reader, or a Kindle accessory if page-turn control affects comfort.
- Choose monochrome or colour. Pay for colour only if covers, diagrams, comics, children’s content, or annotation justify it.
- Set storage and lighting requirements. Decide whether 16 GB is enough, whether 32 GB is useful for large files, and whether warm or auto-adjusting light matters.
- Compare the complete cost in your country. Add a case, stylus, remote, or page-turn cover and recheck taxes, stock, and return terms.
- Buy from the current product page. The figures in this guide are volatile US announcements or listings, so confirm the exact model immediately before ordering.
Bottom-line decision
Kindle is the better alternative for an Amazon-centered reader who wants the simplest path from existing purchases to a current device. Kobo is the better alternative for a reader whose priorities are direct support for listed ebook formats, eligible library borrowing, or built-in page-turn buttons. If colour and buttons are the deciding factors, compare Kobo Libra Colour with Amazon’s Colorsoft models; if compact monochrome reading is the goal, compare Kobo Clara BW with the 2026 Kindle after checking which store holds your books.
