Choose Kobo when direct library borrowing is your priority and your library uses Libby/OverDrive with the titles you want. Choose Kindle when you are in the United States, your library offers eligible Kindle editions, and buying through Amazon’s Kindle ecosystem matters most. Neither brand is a universal winner: the deciding factors are your country, library service, individual titles, and whether you want to check out books on the e-reader itself.

Before purchasing either device, search your own library catalog for several books you actually plan to read. Library participation, lending licenses, holds, and supported formats can change the answer even when the hardware looks attractive.

Kindle and Kobo at a glance

The practical difference is the path a library loan takes to your device. OverDrive documents Kindle Books as available for U.S. libraries only. A U.S. borrower finds a Kindle-compatible edition in Libby or on the library’s OverDrive website and then sends that loan to a Kindle. Kobo supports a direct OverDrive borrowing flow on supported e-readers in countries where the local Libby service is available, although the library and the specific title must still participate.

Decision point Kindle Kobo What to verify before buying
Library geography OverDrive says Kindle Books are currently available for U.S. libraries only. Kobo lists Libby availability in multiple countries, but a participating local library is required. Your country, library system, and library card eligibility.
Where checkout happens In Libby or the library’s OverDrive website; select the Kindle option for an eligible title. In Libby, on the library website, or directly on a supported Kobo e-reader. Whether avoiding a phone or computer during checkout matters to you.
Catalog coverage Only loans with an eligible Kindle edition can be sent to Kindle. Kobo warns that some library titles are unavailable through Kobo, and some Kobo titles are unavailable from a library. Search several specific books, not just the author or store catalog.
Buying books Best aligned with readers who buy through Amazon’s Kindle ecosystem. Best aligned with readers who buy through Kobo; purchased and borrowed Kobo books can appear together, but loans remain temporary. Prices and availability for the authors and editions you actually buy.
Audiobook loans Not assessed in detail in the cited e-reader documentation. Libby audiobook loans cannot be played on Kobo e-readers; some content is available only in the Libby app. The exact app and device route if audiobooks are important.
Screen, battery, storage, and current price Not established by the library-focused evidence. Not established by the library-focused evidence. Compare the exact current models separately; do not infer hardware superiority from borrowing support.

For the official service boundaries, see OverDrive’s Kindle guidance and Kobo’s instructions for borrowing with a Kobo eReader.

Why your library matters more than the logo

Library ebook access is a rights and catalog question, not simply a question of whether an e-reader can display an ebook file. Your library licenses titles from distributors, controls the number of simultaneous copies, and chooses which formats it offers. A title can be sold in a store yet unavailable as a loan, or available to one device ecosystem but not the other.

Check the service your library uses

Libby and OverDrive are central to the workflows described by the official Kindle and Kobo documentation. Some libraries use another service or have a limited ebook collection. Sign in to your library’s website or Libby with your own card before choosing a device. If your library is not a participating Libby/OverDrive library, the Kobo and Kindle procedures below may not apply.

Check the exact edition, not only the title

Search for several books you intend to borrow. Confirm that each result shows a borrowable ebook, that the lending format is compatible with your planned e-reader, and that you can place a hold when all copies are out. An audiobook, fixed-layout edition, or other format may appear in the catalog without being a normal ebook loan for an e-reader.

How library borrowing works on Kindle

Kindle library borrowing is a U.S.-specific OverDrive pathway. OverDrive’s e-reader help page states: Kindle Books are currently available for U.S. libraries only. That is a service and format limitation, not a claim that Kindle hardware cannot display every borrowed ebook. Outside the United States, or when a library does not license a Kindle edition, the Kindle delivery option may not appear.

Requirements

  • A library card from a participating U.S. library.
  • A library ebook with an eligible Kindle edition.
  • Internet access for the initial checkout and delivery.
  • A Kindle registered to the account that will receive the loan.

Typical Kindle checkout steps

  1. Open Libby or your library’s OverDrive-powered website and sign in with your library card.
  2. Search for the book and open the ebook record. Check that the format or delivery options include Kindle.
  3. Borrow the title. If every licensed copy is in use, place a hold and wait for the library’s notification.
  4. Choose the Kindle delivery option and follow the account sign-in prompt. The exact button labels can vary by library site.
  5. Select the target Kindle and complete the send or get-library-book action.
  6. Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi and sync. The loan should appear when the delivery has completed.

OverDrive’s Kindle instructions and e-reader help page describe the supported route. Do not assume that every ebook returned by a library search has a Kindle edition; the library’s individual record controls that choice.

What can prevent a Kindle loan from appearing

  • Non-U.S. library: OverDrive’s documented Kindle Books program is limited to U.S. libraries.
  • No Kindle edition: The library may license an ebook in a format that cannot be sent through the Kindle option.
  • Different library platform: A library that does not use the documented OverDrive workflow may offer no Kindle delivery path.
  • Loan not synchronized: A Kindle needs an internet connection to receive the selected title; sync after completing checkout.
  • Hold or license limit: The book may be unavailable until a copy is returned or your hold reaches the front of the queue.

How library borrowing works on Kobo

Supported Kobo e-readers can connect a public-library card, browse the library catalog, borrow books, place holds, and sync compatible loans. Newer compatible Kobo models include OverDrive directly, allowing checkout and download on the e-reader instead of requiring a separate phone or computer. Kobo’s setup guidance requires a library card and Wi-Fi, and it warns that local Libby service may not be available everywhere.

Where Kobo’s Libby integration is listed

Kobo’s country guidance lists Libby availability in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. This is a country-level availability list, not a guarantee that every library in those places participates. You still need a card from a local library that offers the desired ebooks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review Kobo’s current Libby country list before buying. Availability and supported models can change, so treat the list as a prerequisite to check rather than a permanent promise.

Typical on-device Kobo checkout steps

  1. Connect the supported Kobo e-reader to Wi-Fi.
  2. Open the library or OverDrive section from the device’s home screen or library menu.
  3. Choose your library, enter the requested library-card details, and sign in.
  4. Search the catalog for the book. Review whether it is available to borrow or requires a hold.
  5. Tap the borrow option, confirm the loan, and download the title.
  6. Open the book from your library. Sync again later to refresh due dates, returns, and holds.

Exact menu names differ by Kobo model and software version. Kobo’s official walkthrough is Borrow eBooks from the public library using your Kobo eReader.

Borrowing through Libby or a library website

You can also borrow on a phone, tablet, or computer through Libby or the library’s website and then sync the Kobo, provided the title and device are supported. This is useful when the library’s search tools are easier to use away from the e-reader. The loan will not become a permanent Kobo purchase; it remains controlled by the library’s lending period.

Limits Kobo documents explicitly

Kobo states: Some Kobo titles may not be available from your library, and some library titles may not be available from Kobo. In practice, that means a book can be visible in Kobo’s store yet absent from your library’s lending catalog, or visible in the library catalog without a Kobo-compatible borrowing route. Treat every decisive title as a catalog check.

Kindle versus Kobo for title coverage

Question Kindle answer Kobo answer
Can I borrow any ebook in my library catalog? No. The title needs an eligible Kindle edition, and the documented Kindle Books service is for U.S. libraries. No. Kobo says some library titles are unavailable through Kobo, and your library must participate in the supported service.
Can I browse and borrow on the e-reader? The documented workflow uses Libby or the library website, followed by sending the loan to Kindle. Supported models can browse, borrow, place holds, and download through the built-in OverDrive flow.
What happens when a popular book is unavailable? You may need to place a hold through the library service. You may need to place a hold; the number of licensed copies and the library’s policy determine the wait.
Does buying the same book bypass a loan wait? A paid Kindle edition may be available even when the library’s licensed copies are all in use; compare the specific edition and price. A paid Kobo edition may be available even when the library has no loan copy or has a hold queue.
Can a library loan be kept permanently? No. A loan is temporary and governed by the library’s due date. No. Borrowed Kobo titles expire automatically at the end of the lending period.

Catalog coverage is therefore not measured by the number of books a store advertises. It is measured by the intersection of your library’s licenses, the title’s compatible format, your country, and the delivery route supported by the device.

Borrowed books and purchased books are different

Library loans

A library loan has a due date set by the lending library. Libraries can limit the number of copies, impose holds, and set the loan period. On Kobo, borrowed titles expire automatically when that period ends. The book may remain visible in the device’s library until it is removed or refreshed, but access ends with the loan.

Returning a book early can make the licensed copy available to another patron, depending on the library system. If you stop reading before the due date, use the return control in the library service rather than treating the loan like a purchased file.

Purchased ebooks

A purchased ebook comes from the device maker’s store account rather than a library license. Kobo says purchased Kobo books remain in the Kobo account unless removed, while borrowed titles are temporary. Kindle is the natural fit for readers whose purchases center on Amazon’s Kindle ecosystem. Current store size, prices, and model costs are not established here, so compare the exact books and devices you intend to buy.

Why a purchase can coexist with a library hold

A store sale and a library loan use separate rights. A library may own only a limited number of digital copies, creating a queue, while the publisher or retailer offers a paid edition immediately. Conversely, a book may be sold in a store but not licensed for your library or not offered in the format your e-reader can receive.

Which reader fits your situation?

Choose Kobo when these statements are true

  • Your local library uses Libby or OverDrive and is in a country where Kobo lists Libby availability.
  • You want to search, borrow, place holds, and download directly on a supported e-reader.
  • You have checked that your priority titles are available through your library’s Kobo-compatible catalog.
  • You are comfortable keeping borrowed and purchased books in one Kobo library while observing separate loan rules.

Choose Kindle when these statements are true

  • You live in the United States and your library offers Kindle editions for the ebooks you borrow.
  • You prefer selecting a loan in Libby or on the library website and then sending it to the Kindle.
  • Your main purchase pattern is buying ebooks through Amazon’s Kindle ecosystem.
  • You have confirmed that the titles you borrow most often show the Kindle delivery option.

Pause before buying either

  • Your library is outside the documented Kindle geography and Kobo’s listed Libby countries.
  • Your library uses a different ebook service or has not confirmed device-compatible delivery.
  • One or two specific books are decisive and you have not checked their lending formats.
  • Audiobooks are central to your choice and you have not verified whether the required app supports your device.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

A practical pre-purchase test

  1. Write down five to ten books you expect to borrow in the next year, including at least one popular title.
  2. Search each title in your library’s catalog or Libby while signed in with your own card.
  3. Record whether each result is an ebook, whether it is currently borrowable, whether a hold is required, and which delivery formats are offered.
  4. For a Kindle, confirm the Kindle option and that your library is in the United States.
  5. For a Kobo, confirm that your country and local library are supported and that the title can be delivered to a supported Kobo.
  6. Check one audiobook separately if you use audiobooks; do not assume an ebook loan and audiobook loan follow the same route.
  7. Compare the purchase price and store availability of the same specific titles in the ecosystem you plan to use.
  8. Only then compare current device models for screen, lighting, storage, accessibility, battery, waterproofing, ergonomics, and price.

Desktop transfer when direct borrowing is unavailable

OverDrive documents a computer-based route using Adobe Digital Editions on Windows or Mac to transfer compatible borrowed ebooks to compatible e-readers. This can help when a model does not provide built-in OverDrive or when the library’s workflow requires a computer.

  1. Borrow a compatible ebook through the library’s OverDrive or Libby service.
  2. Install and authorize Adobe Digital Editions on a Windows or Mac computer as required by the library’s instructions.
  3. Download the library book in the format supplied for compatible e-readers.
  4. Connect the e-reader to the computer with its data cable.
  5. In Adobe Digital Editions, authorize the device if prompted, then transfer the borrowed title to it.
  6. Eject the device safely and open the transferred book. The lending period still applies, and the title will stop working when the loan expires.

Read OverDrive’s Getting started with e-readers instructions for current compatibility details. A cable is not automatically an extra purchase; whether you need one depends on the device and the setup you already have.

Troubleshooting common borrowing problems

The book appears in Libby but has no device option

Open the title’s format and delivery details. The library may have an EPUB or another format without a Kindle edition, or the title may not be supported by Kobo’s device integration. Search the same title on the library website and check for a compatible ebook format rather than relying on the cover image alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kobo cannot find your library

Confirm that your country appears on Kobo’s Libby availability list, that Wi-Fi is working, and that your library participates in the service. A library card by itself does not guarantee that the library’s catalog is available through Kobo.

The loan is stuck on a hold

That usually reflects the library’s licensed-copy limit rather than a device fault. Keep the hold, check the estimated wait in Libby or the library website, or buy the title if immediate reading is worth the price. Do not assume that a store copy removes the library’s hold automatically; the two systems are separate.

The book was borrowed but is not visible on the e-reader

Connect to Wi-Fi and sync. For Kindle, verify that the loan was sent to the correct registered device. For Kobo, confirm that the account and library card used on the e-reader match the account used to borrow the book. If using desktop transfer, check that Adobe Digital Editions recognized and authorized the device before transferring.

An audiobook loan will not play on Kobo

Kobo states that Libby audiobook loans cannot be played on Kobo e-readers. Use the Libby app or another route the library explicitly supports for that audiobook; do not treat an audiobook listing as proof of e-reader playback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Kobo is the stronger likely fit for a reader who wants direct library borrowing on the e-reader and whose participating library and desired titles are available through Kobo’s Libby/OverDrive integration. Kindle is the stronger likely fit for a U.S. reader whose library offers Kindle-format loans and who buys primarily through Amazon’s Kindle ecosystem. If your country, library platform, or must-read titles are uncertain, verify the catalog first and postpone the device decision. The evidence supports a library-compatibility recommendation, not a universal verdict on price, screen, battery, or hardware.
