No—not as a supported feature on a standard Kindle e-reader. Amazon says audio and video content is unsupported on Kindle E-readers, and its publishing guidance says streaming video is not supported for Kindle Edition media. A report describes an unofficial experiment involving a jailbroken Kindle 4, but it does not establish a reliable method for other models or firmware.
What “Kindle” means matters
People sometimes use “Kindle” for both Amazon’s E Ink e-readers and its Fire tablets. They are different device categories. This answer concerns Kindle E-readers, such as models designed primarily for reading, not Fire tablets.
Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) guidance says audio and video in Kindle Edition content are not supported on Kindle E-reader devices: customers can read the book, but its audio or video is replaced by an unsupported-device message. KDP lists Fire tablets (2nd generation and later), iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch as supported for this embedded content in reflowable books. That distinction concerns media embedded in Kindle editions; it is not a list of devices that support every streaming service. Amazon KDP’s audio and video guidance.
Does Amazon officially support streaming video on Kindle E-readers?
No. Amazon’s KDP guidance states: “Streaming video is not supported at this time. Use embedded video instead.” It separately says audio and video content is unsupported on Kindle E-reader devices. So a Kindle E-reader is not an officially supported way to stream movies or video from a website, nor to play video embedded in a Kindle Edition.

Some older Kindle models have an experimental web browser, but that does not make them streaming devices. An older Kindle user guide says the browser “does not support media plug-ins.” Amazon’s older Kindle user guide.
What is the reported Kindle video workaround?
A How-To Geek report republished by Yahoo Tech describes an unofficial experiment in which a decade-old Kindle 4 was jailbroken and used with KOReader to do more than ordinary reading. The report is not evidence of an Amazon-supported feature, and its page could not be directly verified here. Its account does not establish the exact Kindle 4 variant, firmware, jailbreak procedure, KOReader version, or whether the result can be reproduced. Yahoo Tech’s republished report.

The E Ink display is a major practical obstacle to motion video. The report notes that the screen cannot refresh anywhere near fast enough for a movie at 24 frames per second; this is a qualitative comparison, not a measured performance benchmark. Amazon describes the Scribe’s display as electronic paper and discusses screen refreshes in its Kindle Scribe user guide.

What should you do if you want to watch video?
- For ordinary streaming: use a device with a supported video app or browser rather than a Kindle E-reader. The evidence here does not establish which services work on any particular alternative device.
- For video embedded in a Kindle book: check the book’s supported-device information and use a device category Amazon lists for that media; Kindle E-readers are excluded.
- If you are considering a jailbreak: treat the Kindle 4 account as an isolated, unofficial experiment, not a step-by-step guide or a recommendation. No dependable model-and-firmware compatibility list is established by the available sources.
Why the headline overstates the case
The reported experiment does not show that Amazon is hiding a supported streaming feature. Amazon’s published guidance says the opposite for Kindle E-readers. The defensible conclusion is narrower: one report describes an unusual modification to an older device, while standard Kindle E-readers are not supported for video playback or streaming.
