Amazon’s Kindle software version 5.19.5 added two reading conveniences: a bookmark button on Page Flip thumbnails and, on supported Colorsoft titles, Story So Far recaps. But 5.19.5 is not the newest software version for every Kindle as of October 9, 2026; Amazon’s model-by-model page lists newer versions for some devices. Check the software listing for your Kindle model before assuming the update applies to your device.
What did Kindle software version 5.19.5 add?
Amazon’s June 2026 release notes describe two features that make it easier to keep track of a book or return to it: bookmarking directly from Page Flip View and Story So Far, a recap for supported books. The additions address different needs—saving a page while browsing thumbnails versus recalling what has happened in the story.
Bookmark a page from Page Flip View
Previously, readers could bookmark while reading by tapping the control in the top-right corner. Version 5.19.5 adds another route: in Page Flip View, tap the bookmark icon on the page thumbnail you want to save. Amazon’s Kindle release notes list the feature for Kindle (12th Generation) and Kindle Colorsoft. The notes explain: “In addition to tapping in the top right corner while reading, you can now create bookmarks by tapping on the bookmark icon in the page thumbnail, in Page Flip View.”

Story So Far provides a spoiler-free refresher covering the book up to your current reading position. It is intended to help you resume a book without paging back through earlier chapters. Amazon lists Story So Far in the Colorsoft notes for version 5.19.5 and describes the feature for supported Kindle titles.

How to use the two features
Save a bookmark while browsing pages
- Open your book and enter Page Flip View.
- Browse the page thumbnails to the location you want to save.
- Tap the bookmark icon on that page’s thumbnail.
You can also bookmark from the top-right corner while reading, as before.
Find a Story So Far recap
- In the Kindle Library, press and hold a supported book and look for “Read recap.”
- Alternatively, while reading, open the book’s three-dot menu and look for the recap option.
The menu option may not appear for every book or in every region. Amazon’s feature announcement describes Story So Far as available in the U.S. on Kindle devices and the Kindle iOS app for supported titles. Amazon says thousands of popular or bestselling English-language books are included; that does not mean every ebook is eligible.

Why the features may not appear on your Kindle
There are several possible reasons. Version 5.19.5’s Page Flip bookmark feature is documented for Kindle (12th Generation) and Colorsoft, not for every legacy Kindle. Story So Far also depends on U.S. availability and whether the specific title is supported. A missing option therefore does not necessarily mean the device failed to update.

As of October 9, 2026, it lists version 5.20.1 for several newer Kindles, while some older models have different, lower version numbers. Version 5.19.5 is the feature-bearing release discussed here, not a universal “latest Kindle update.”

How to check and update Kindle software
Amazon says Kindle software updates download and install automatically when the device is connected wirelessly. To check the version or install an update manually, use the instructions for your exact model rather than downloading firmware intended for another Kindle.
- Identify your Kindle model using Amazon’s model-specific software update page.
- Compare your installed software version with the version listed for that model.
- Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi and allow time for an automatic update, or follow Amazon’s manual installation instructions for that model.
Story So Far is not Ask this Book
Amazon describes Ask this Book as a separate tool for asking questions about a book’s plot, characters, and themes. Its availability is also different: Amazon says it is currently available in the U.S. Kindle iOS app and describes a later expansion to Kindle devices and Android. The cited release notes do not identify Ask this Book as one of the version 5.19.5 additions.
