For most people who want one device for both books and handwritten notes, the current Kindle Scribe is the better choice. It combines Kindle-store reading, an 11-inch glare-free screen, front-light configurations, notebooks and document markup. The reMarkable 2 can still suit handwriting-first users—especially existing owners who prefer its paper-like PDF workflow—but reMarkable now lists it as discontinued and unavailable as a new device. That makes this a comparison between a current Scribe lineup and remaining reMarkable 2 stock, not two equally current products.
What is being compared now?
Many online comparisons use specifications and prices from the 2022 Kindle Scribe or later 2024 updates. Amazon’s current lineup is a redesigned Kindle Scribe family, so identify the exact configuration before buying. Amazon describes the current Scribe as an 11-inch, glare-free reading and writing device. The lineup includes a standard model, a Colorsoft model and a version without a front light.
reMarkable’s current product page labels reMarkable 2 “Discontinued” and “Not available.” The company says compatible Markers, Marker tips, Book Folios and Type Folios will remain available. A used or refurbished unit may still be obtainable, but the manufacturer does not establish a current new-device price or guaranteed third-party inventory.
The recommendations below use published manufacturer specifications and feature descriptions rather than independent laboratory measurements or firsthand writing tests. Amazon’s claims about speed and writing feel are product descriptions, and reMarkable’s battery figure is an advertised maximum without a matching test protocol on the product page.

Which is better for reading?
Kindle books and general reading: Kindle Scribe
The Scribe is the straightforward choice if your reading happens in the Kindle ecosystem. Amazon positions it as a reading device as well as a notebook, and its current lineup includes a front-lit option. A front light matters when you read in bed, on a flight, in a dim room or under changing indoor lighting; you do not need an external lamp simply to see the page.
The 11-inch screen also gives long pages and large-format documents more room. Amazon says the display’s proportions mirror a sheet of paper. That is a manufacturer description, not a measured writing-feel test, but the larger canvas is relevant when reviewing full-size documents or keeping a page of notes beside a text.
PDF and EPUB libraries: reMarkable 2 remains viable
reMarkable 2 is designed around documents you import yourself. Its official specifications list PDF and EPUB import and PDF, PNG and SVG export. If your reading collection is a set of academic papers, manuals, drafts or public-domain EPUB files, the lack of a documented Kindle storefront may not matter.
Its monochrome 10.3-inch display is smaller than the current Scribe’s 11-inch panel. The published 226-pixel-per-inch figure can help with text clarity, but it does not predict how comfortable a particular PDF will be: page layout, font size and whether the document is scanned are often more important.
Reading decision
- Choose Scribe when Kindle-store access, adjustable front lighting or one device for books and notes is central.
- Choose reMarkable 2 only when your library is primarily PDFs and EPUBs and you value its focused document interface enough to accept discontinued hardware.
- For scanned PDFs, test the exact files before buying; neither manufacturer’s headline screen specification guarantees legible scans without zooming.
Which is better for handwriting?
Kindle Scribe’s notebook and markup tools
The current Scribe combines freeform notebooks with writing directly on imported documents. Amazon’s current product information includes annotated-PDF export, handwriting refinement, notebook search and summaries, and OneNote notebook export. Some newer tools can depend on market, account or software eligibility, so confirm that the feature is available in your region before treating it as a requirement.
Amazon says the redesigned Scribe is “40% faster for writing and page turns.” That is Amazon’s product claim, not a controlled comparison against reMarkable 2. It indicates the company’s intended performance improvement but does not establish latency under identical pens, files or firmware.

reMarkable 2’s handwriting-first workflow
reMarkable 2 uses a textured writing surface and a deliberately paper-oriented interface. The official product description supports notebooks, direct PDF annotation and handwriting-to-text conversion. For someone who spends most of the day annotating documents, sketching or writing long notes, that narrow focus can be an advantage: fewer reading-store features compete for attention.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →That workflow comes with a lifecycle consideration. The tablet itself is discontinued, so a buyer must evaluate the condition of a used unit, the remaining warranty or return window, and the likely availability of replacement accessories. reMarkable says compatible Markers, tips and folio categories remain available, but that statement does not guarantee stock from every retailer.
Writing-feel decision
Published specifications cannot tell you whether the pen texture, friction or latency feels right in your hand. Amazon describes the Scribe as feeling like writing on paper, while reMarkable emphasizes its textured surface. Treat both as manufacturer positioning. If handwriting feel is the deciding factor, try each device in person or buy only where a clear return policy protects you.
Notes, search, conversion and sharing
When you need searchable or summarized notes
Amazon’s current Scribe materials describe AI-assisted notebook search and summaries, along with handwriting refinement. These functions can make a large notebook collection easier to revisit, but eligibility may vary by market, account and software version. Check the live product documentation for your country before relying on a specific AI feature.
reMarkable lists handwriting conversion and app synchronization. Its Connect subscription expands cloud and cross-device capabilities. The manufacturer’s listing does not make those subscription features identical to Amazon’s search and summary tools, so compare the exact output you need: converted text, keyword search, a generated summary or simply a faithful handwritten page.

When you need a particular destination
Scribe’s current materials describe document workflows involving Google Drive and OneDrive, annotated-PDF export and OneNote notebook export. That is useful if your work already lives in Microsoft or Google cloud storage, but verify whether an export preserves the annotations in the format your recipient expects.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

reMarkable lists integration with Google Drive, Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive. It also describes PowerPoint and Word handling as PDFs. Those integrations support a document-centered workflow, but they do not mean a native editable Word or PowerPoint file is produced after handwriting. Plan on exporting or converting a PDF when sending marked-up Office documents.
Display, lighting, color and portability
Size and weight
Amazon publishes the current Scribe at 11 inches and 400 grams. reMarkable publishes reMarkable 2 at 10.3 inches, approximately 403.5 grams and 226 PPI. The weight difference is only a few grams on paper; a pen and folio can change the carrying experience more than the tablet bodies do.
The larger Scribe canvas can reduce page turns on full-size documents and leave more room for margins. The slightly smaller reMarkable may feel less imposing in a small bag. Neither conclusion is a hands-on measurement, so consider the dimensions of your usual PDFs and the folio you plan to use.

Front light and color
The current Scribe family includes a front-lit configuration and a model without a front light. Amazon also lists a Colorsoft configuration at a higher U.S. starting price. Do not assume every Scribe feature applies to every configuration: confirm whether the model you select has the lighting and color capabilities you need.
The reMarkable 2 specification is monochrome and does not document a front light on its official page. Reading in a dark room therefore requires an external light source. For color-coded diagrams or highlighted textbooks, a monochrome workflow may also be limiting.
Battery life and charging claims
reMarkable advertises up to two weeks of battery life. The page does not provide a matching usage protocol, so treat that as a manufacturer maximum rather than a guaranteed result for continuous reading, frequent writing, Wi-Fi synchronization or heavy PDF use.

Amazon’s legacy Scribe FAQ says up to 12 weeks on a charge with 30 minutes of daily reading, or three weeks with 30 minutes of daily writing, under specified charging conditions. That FAQ refers to an earlier Scribe product context. It should not be presented as a like-for-like battery result for the redesigned current lineup unless Amazon’s documentation for the exact configuration confirms it.

Amazon lists these U.S. starting prices for the current lineup:
- Kindle Scribe: $499.99 starting price.
- Kindle Scribe Colorsoft: $629.99 starting price.

What a reMarkable 2 purchase means now
Because reMarkable marks the tablet discontinued and unavailable, there is no current official new-device price to place beside those Scribe figures. A marketplace listing may be used, refurbished or old inventory, and prices can vary sharply with the included Marker, folio, storage condition and return rights.

Choose by your actual workflow
Choose the current Kindle Scribe if:
- You buy or borrow most books through Kindle and want those books beside your notes.
- You read in variable lighting and want a front-light configuration.
- You want one large screen for books, notebooks and document markup.
- You need the current Amazon-described options for annotated-PDF export, OneNote export, notebook search or summaries, subject to regional eligibility.
- You prefer buying current hardware with a published manufacturer price rather than hunting for discontinued stock.
Consider reMarkable 2 if:
- Your library is primarily PDFs and EPUBs that you import yourself.
- Your priority is a focused notebook and PDF-annotation workflow rather than a built-in book store.
- You already own one and have compatible accessories, established cloud workflows or a large archive of reMarkable notes.
- You can verify the condition, return policy and accessory availability of a used or remaining-stock unit.
Neither is automatically right if:
- You require a conventional tablet with a broad app store, video playback or full-color document work.
- You need guaranteed editable Word or PowerPoint files after handwriting; both workflows are centered on documents and exports rather than promising native Office editing.
- You need a laboratory-proven battery or latency comparison. The published figures here come from different manufacturers and test assumptions.
A practical buying checklist
- Name the exact model. For Scribe, record whether the listing is standard, Colorsoft or without a front light. For reMarkable, determine whether it is used, refurbished or remaining old stock.
- List your reading files. Separate Kindle-store books from PDFs and EPUBs. Confirm that your essential titles and documents are supported before paying.
- List your export destinations. Decide whether you need Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, OneNote, PDF, PNG, SVG or handwriting-to-text conversion.
- Check feature eligibility. Verify country, account and software requirements for Scribe search, summaries, color and cloud features; check Connect requirements for reMarkable functions.
- Budget the complete kit. Include the pen, replacement tips, folio, taxes and any subscription—not just the tablet body.
- Verify the return path. This is especially important for judging writing texture, pen latency and the readability of your own PDFs, which published specifications cannot establish.
- Recheck live price and stock. Amazon’s figures are starting prices and can change; reMarkable’s manufacturer page does not establish current third-party inventory.
Verdict
The current Kindle Scribe is the safer all-round recommendation for reading and handwriting: it is the current product family, supports Kindle reading, offers an 11-inch display and has front-lit and color configurations. Its notebook and document tools also cover the mainstream needs of reading, annotating and exporting.
reMarkable 2 is a specialist choice rather than an equal new-product rival. Its paper-focused interface, PDF workflow, handwriting conversion and textured writing surface can remain exactly what an existing owner or document-heavy writer wants. However, the discontinued status means availability, condition, accessory cost and future support deserve explicit consideration before purchase.
Make the final choice from your file library, lighting needs, export destinations and tolerance for discontinued hardware—not from screen size alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is reMarkable 2 still sold new?
reMarkable’s current product page labels reMarkable 2 “Discontinued” and “Not available.” Any new-looking listing should be checked carefully for seller, warranty, condition and return terms.
Does reMarkable 2 read Kindle books?
The official reMarkable 2 information documents PDF and EPUB import, but it does not document access to the Kindle storefront. Kindle-store reading therefore favors the Kindle Scribe.
Are the Scribe and reMarkable battery claims directly comparable?
No. reMarkable states up to two weeks without a matching protocol, while Amazon’s frequently quoted 12-week and three-week figures come from an older Scribe FAQ with specific usage assumptions.
