If your Kindle Scribe is mainly for books, handwriting, and marked-up documents, the 2025 monochrome Kindle Scribe is the better fit for you unless color is a task you genuinely need. Colorsoft’s color display is its defining advantage, but one hands-on review found it muted, and Amazon lists the same core size, pen, and productivity features for both models. That makes Colorsoft a conditional choice—not a universally superior Scribe.
Which Kindle Scribe models are being compared?
This comparison is between the Kindle Scribe (3rd Generation, 2025) and the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft (1st Generation, 2025). They are distinct from earlier Scribe generations and from the smaller Kindle Colorsoft e-reader. Amazon’s device identification guide lists both 2025 Scribe models with 32GB or 64GB storage.
Amazon’s announcement describes the redesigned Scribe lineup as having an 11-inch glare-free display, a thickness of 5.4 mm, and a weight of 400 g. Those are manufacturer specifications shared across the lineup, not a reason to choose Colorsoft over monochrome.

Colorsoft is the Scribe to consider if you want color on the page, such as for colored annotations, illustrations, comics, or manga. Amazon says it supports ten pen colors and five highlighter colors, as well as a shading tool. The monochrome Scribe does not offer that color-display use case.
#1 Best Overall

- Bring ideas to life in color – The custom-built Colorsoft display delivers high-contrast, paper-like color that’s easy on the eyes without distracting flashes when writing.
- Get a pen-on-paper feel: The textured surface and responsive display create a smooth, paper-like writing experience. Plus, the included pen never needs charging and has a built-in eraser and shortcut button for tools like the highlighter.
- More room to read, write, and think – Just 5.4mm thin and 400g light, with fluid performance and a large 11" display that gives you space to work comfortably.
- Get more out of your notes – Take notes in the built-in notebook, then use AI to find information, ask questions about what you’ve written, and generate summaries. You can also clean up handwriting or convert it to text.
TechRadar’s 2026 review reports 300 ppi for black-and-white content and 150 ppi for color on Colorsoft. After four weeks using the device for books, comics, and manga, that reviewer found black text clear but described the color as muted, even in Vivid mode. This is one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled comparison with the monochrome Scribe or evidence that every reader will find the colors unsatisfactory.
For someone who mostly reads text and writes notes, that trade-off may not be worth making. If color is central to what you read or annotate, the lower color resolution and the review’s observation are useful expectations to weigh—not proof Colorsoft will disappoint you.

How do writing, reading, and productivity features compare?
Both devices include a Premium Pen, which Amazon says attaches magnetically and does not need charging. Amazon lists a touchscreen, USB-C, adjustable screen light, and VoiceView over Bluetooth for both models. Its announcement also presents shared tools for the new Scribe lineup:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Quick Notes for capturing notes.
- AI-powered notebook search that can return summaries and support follow-up questions.
- Document markup, with Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive support for importing documents and exporting annotated PDFs.
- OneNote sharing for sending notes.
Amazon claims the new monochrome Scribe is 40% faster for writing and page turns. That figure is a manufacturer claim; the available information does not establish it as an independent measurement or as a measured advantage over Colorsoft.

Amazon’s US announcement says document sharing with Alexa+ is available in the United States. Do not assume that feature is available in other countries.
Which one is the better choice for your use?
| Your main use | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Reading mostly text and handwriting notes | 2025 monochrome Kindle Scribe | It offers the shared Scribe form, Premium Pen, and productivity features without making color the deciding reason to buy. |
| Adding colored annotations or highlighting | Kindle Scribe Colorsoft | Amazon lists ten pen colors and five highlighter colors for the new lineup, and Colorsoft provides the color display. |
| Reading comics, manga, or illustrated material | Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, if color matters to you | It is the color option in this comparison, but its color resolution is 150 ppi according to TechRadar, whose reviewer described the color as muted. |
| Choosing based on size or weight | No clear difference established | Amazon gives shared lineup figures of 11 inches, 5.4 mm thick, and 400 g. |
These use cases do not make the monochrome model objectively better for every buyer. They explain why someone who bought Colorsoft expecting a dramatic color experience might regret the choice, while a reader who relies on color could reasonably prefer it.

The available sources also do not establish exact folio compatibility across generations. If you want a cover, verify that the listing explicitly names your exact 2025 Scribe model rather than assuming an older Scribe folio fits.
