To organize a Kindle library, use Collections for lasting categories, library views and filters to control what you see, and Remove Download to clear a device without deleting a cloud-backed book. Kindle menus vary by device and app; Amazon’s detailed view instructions here are for Kindle Scribe.
1. Create a few Collections around how you read
Collections are Kindle’s built-in way to group books and documents. Start with categories that will help you choose or find something—such as Next reads, Read, or Reference—rather than creating a separate collection for every narrow subject. Collection features and labels can differ across devices and apps. Amazon’s current detailed instructions cited here cover Kindle Scribe, so check the menus on your own Kindle if a label or control is different. Kindle Scribe User’s Guide
2. Put a title in more than one Collection
A book does not have to belong to only one category. For example, you can include a title in both Science fiction and Next reads. Amazon’s Kindle Scribe guide says an item can be added to multiple Collections. Kindle Scribe User’s Guide

3. Switch to Collections view when you want to browse by category
On Kindle Scribe, the library offers Grid, List, and Collections views. Use Collections view when you want to navigate your groups instead of scanning individual titles. Scribe also has a setting for whether Collections view shows all collections, favorites in the library, or only collections in Collections view. Those controls are device-specific; do not assume the same options appear in every Kindle app or model. Kindle Scribe User’s Guide
4. Use filters to narrow the library temporarily
Collections are categories you maintain; filters change which titles are shown. On Kindle Scribe, choosing Downloaded limits the library to content on the device. Clear that filter to reveal cloud holdings. If a book appears to be missing, first switch to All and clear active filters before trying more involved troubleshooting. 5. Keep only near-term reads downloaded
If the device library feels crowded, keep the books you expect to read soon downloaded and remove other cloud-backed downloads from the device. A removed download can generally be downloaded again from the account’s cloud library. This is a housekeeping choice, not a change to your Collections.

6. Choose Remove Download—not permanent deletion—for device cleanup
Remove Download clears a downloaded copy from the device while leaving cloud-backed content available to download again. Permanently Delete removes the content from the Amazon account and its devices. Use the latter only when you intend to remove the item from the account, not merely tidy one Kindle. Subscription loans are a separate case: returning a Kindle Unlimited or Prime Reading title removes it from the library; that is not the same as removing the download of a personal purchase. Remove Books from Your Mobile Kindle App

7. If a Collection is missing elsewhere, check sync and downloads
A Collection’s presence and its books’ download status are separate. Amazon says Collections created on a registered device or the website do not automatically download to other devices. On supported e-readers, Amazon’s help steps are to open Library, choose Collections, open the Collection menu, and select Download all items. Sync the Kindle if library changes have not appeared. There is also a legacy distinction: Amazon says a Collection marked Local Collection is available only on the device where it was created. Cloud Collections are the relevant type for supported cross-device syncing. Amazon’s Collections help

Check the app version before following Windows instructions
Amazon’s Kindle for Windows help says its Legacy Kindle app, previously called Kindle for PC, is unsupported as of June 30, 2026. If you use Windows, verify that the instructions you follow apply to your current Kindle app rather than relying on an older PC workflow. Create Collections in Kindle for Windows
