Killing Floor 2 is a wave-survival shooter: you and up to five teammates fight AI-controlled Zeds, spend money at the trader between waves, reposition before the next attack, and eventually face a boss. You survive by choosing a perk that fits the team, protecting an escape route, and controlling where the horde reaches you—not by standing still and shooting everything in sight.

How a Killing Floor 2 match works

The core loop is deliberately simple. A wave begins, Zeds approach from multiple entrances, and your team clears enough of them to reach the intermission. The trader then opens for a limited buying period. You use that time to purchase or upgrade weapons, ammunition and armor, sell equipment you no longer need, and move toward the next defensive position. The pattern repeats until the final boss wave—or until the team is wiped out.

Tripwire describes Solo and Co-op as successive waves of AI-controlled Zeds ending at a boss or death. The standard Co-op experience supports up to six players, while the listed Versus format supports up to 12 players. Those numbers describe lobby or match capacity, not a guarantee that every public match will be full.

What matters during a wave

  • Keep a route open. A kill is useful only if it does not leave you trapped in a dead end. Watch the doorway, stairwell or alley you will use to retreat.
  • Maintain a formation. Teammates should be close enough to help when a large Zed arrives, but not stacked so tightly that one attack disables several players.
  • Spend attention, not just ammunition. Small Zeds can wait for a moment; a dangerous elite reaching the group cannot. Turn toward the highest-risk target before the screen fills with lesser enemies.
  • Use the trader period to reset. Heal, refill, check your armor and ammunition, and decide where the next hold or rotation will happen before the doors open again.

The trader-to-wave rhythm

  1. Finish the current wave without overextending. Do not chase a retreating target around a corner if doing so breaks your team’s line or exposes a flank.
  2. Find the trader route immediately. Learn the direction and distance on your first visit; a long detour can cost valuable buying time on later waves.
  3. Buy for your perk’s job. Prioritize the weapon, ammunition and defensive items that let your role work. A damage dealer who cannot afford ammunition, or a support perk carrying only one weapon, is not ready for the next wave.
  4. Choose the next position before the countdown ends. Identify the main sightline, the fallback room and the exit you will take if the hold collapses.
  5. Rotate early. When the rear approach becomes crowded or a large Zed blocks the only exit, move while the route is still usable rather than waiting for a last-second escape.

Choosing a perk

Perks are role packages with their own skills, weapon families and powers. There is no universal best perk: the right choice depends on whether your team needs healing, ammunition, trash clearing, precision damage, crowd control or a safer way to handle large Zeds. Your perk level unlocks skills, but good positioning and target selection matter more than selecting a supposedly perfect build.

Perk Primary job Strengths What demands practice Team value
Berserker Front-line melee control Close-range durability, mobility and the ability to hold or disrupt a lane Managing distance, avoiding being surrounded and judging when to disengage Buys space for the group and can draw pressure away from fragile teammates
Commando Automatic-fire trash clearing and battlefield information Reliable control of lesser Zeds and strong awareness of threats through the fight Ammo discipline and switching from horde clearing to elite focus Keeps the screen clear and helps the team see dangerous targets
Support Shotgun damage and ammunition support Powerful close-to-mid-range bursts and extra ammunition utility Reload timing, positioning for effective spread and carrying enough reserve ammo Feeds ammunition and finishes targets that reach the formation
Field Medic Healing and emergency stabilization Fast recovery, defensive buffs and tools for keeping allies in the fight Tracking several health bars while still contributing damage Turns mistakes that would cause a wipe into recoverable damage
Demolitionist Explosive area damage and large-target bursts Clears clustered hordes and can punish groups or priority targets Blast radius, ammunition economy and avoiding friendly-fire situations Breaks pressure when many Zeds occupy a doorway or choke
Firebug Area denial and close-range crowd control Controls lanes with fire and handles dense groups efficiently Maintaining visibility, not igniting targets that teammates need to see clearly, and conserving fuel Protects flanks and slows the advance through narrow approaches
Gunslinger Mobile precision damage Fast weapon handling, movement and strong focused damage Aim, reload management and staying alive without heavy defensive tools Deletes priority targets while the team holds a wider formation
Sharpshooter Long-range precision and weak-point damage High reward for accurate shots against elite Zeds and bosses Headshot consistency, sightline selection and avoiding tunnel vision Removes the most dangerous target before it reaches the line
SWAT Close-quarters automatic fire and stagger control Strong short-range suppression and dependable handling in tight spaces Limited reach compared with precision perks and rapid ammunition use Protects the formation when corridors fill with fast-moving enemies
Survivalist Flexible mixed-role loadout Can cover gaps in an improvised or inexperienced team Doing several jobs adequately instead of specializing in one Adapts when the group lacks a particular role, but does not replace a dedicated specialist in every task

Berserker: create space, then leave it

Berserker is the natural choice if you enjoy being close to the action and want a perk built around melee control. Your job is to interrupt the front of a wave, protect a retreat and prevent lesser Zeds from reaching ranged teammates. The trap is assuming durability means invulnerability. Keep an exit behind you, avoid being boxed in, and retreat before several heavy enemies can attack at once.

Commando: clear the screen and call threats

Commando weapons are suited to sustained automatic fire against ordinary Zeds. Use that strength to keep the team’s immediate space clear, then switch attention when a Scrake, Fleshpound or boss appears. Because Commando play encourages constant shooting, watch your ammunition and communicate dangerous targets rather than spending every magazine on minor enemies.

Support: ammunition and decisive bursts

Support combines close-range shotgun power with ammunition utility. Hold a position where enemies must pass through your effective range, and use the trader to keep both shells and reserve ammunition healthy. Do not stand in front of the whole team: you need room to reload and a clear lane for teammates who are trying to land precision shots.

Field Medic: prevent a bad moment from becoming a wipe

Field Medic is the team’s recovery specialist. Monitor allies before they reach critical health, heal while moving between cover, and keep enough offensive capability to defend yourself. A Medic who tunnels on one wounded player can miss a flank, so check the whole formation and the escape route between heals.

Demolitionist: use explosions where the horde must pass

Demolitionist excels when enemies cluster at a doorway, staircase or choke. Place explosive damage where it breaks the largest concentration, not where it merely produces a dramatic single kill. Learn the blast distance and coordinate with teammates; firing into a teammate’s retreat or at a target surrounded by allies can create more danger than it removes.

Firebug: deny lanes and protect the rear

Firebug controls space by setting advancing groups alight. Narrow approaches and side entrances are especially valuable targets because burning enemies slow or weaken a push before it reaches the team. Fire can also obscure a target, so avoid covering the exact head or weak point that a Sharpshooter is trying to hit.

Gunslinger: stay mobile while finishing priority targets

Gunslinger suits players who want speed and accurate, repeated shots without committing to a stationary firing line. Strafe around the edge of the formation, keep a retreat path, and reload before the next elite arrives. Mobility is a resource: use it to change angles, not to wander so far from the team that no one can rescue you.

Sharpshooter: make every sightline count

Sharpshooter rewards deliberate aim and a clear view of the approach. Choose a position with a long lane and a fallback, then reserve attention for elite heads and boss weak points. The most common beginner error is tunnel vision: a perfect shot is worthless if Crawlers are already behind you or the team is rotating without you.

SWAT: dominate close corridors

SWAT is comfortable in compact spaces where fast automatic fire can stagger or suppress enemies. It is a strong answer when a map forces close engagements, but its effective range is more limited than a precision perk’s. Stay near teammates, watch ammunition consumption and move before a corridor becomes a trap.

Survivalist: fill the missing job

Survivalist is useful when a group is learning, when the team composition has a gap, or when you want to change roles during a match. Decide what the team lacks before buying: healing, ammunition, horde control or elite damage. A flexible loadout is valuable, but a specialist usually performs a clearly defined job more efficiently.

Recognizing Zeds and setting priorities

Zeds are not one uniform horde. Basic enemies such as Clots and Crawlers create pressure by occupying attention, slowing movement and attacking from awkward angles. Elite enemies and bosses determine whether a position survives. Your priority order should therefore change with the situation rather than follow a rigid kill list.

Ordinary Zeds: manage the edges

Clots and similar basic enemies are dangerous in numbers, especially when they arrive from behind while the team is focused forward. Crawlers are easy to overlook because of their low profile. Sweep the floor, listen for side approaches and keep a teammate responsible for rear awareness. Do not waste your strongest single-target resource on a minor enemy if an elite is entering the lane.

Scrakes and Fleshpounds: announce, isolate and focus

Scrakes and Fleshpounds are major threats that can break a formation quickly. Call them out as soon as you see or hear them, stop scattering damage across the horde, and let the players with the best precision or large-target tools concentrate fire. If the team cannot finish one immediately, create distance and preserve a route instead of allowing it to reach a cramped corner.

Blocking and evasion: do not donate ammunition

Update notes for selected Zeds document blocking and evasion behaviors. When an enemy raises a block or dodges, firing repeatedly into the resistant area is inefficient. Flank when the route is safe, wait for the defensive behavior to end, or coordinate so one player draws the defense while another attacks from a better angle. This is also why a team should avoid standing in a single straight line: different angles give you more options when a target refuses a frontal exchange.

Bosses: a separate phase of the fight

The boss wave changes the objective from routine clearing to controlled damage and survival. Keep the arena open, identify the nearest fallback and avoid spending all healing or ammunition before the boss reaches its vulnerable moment. Ordinary Zeds still matter because they cut off escape routes; clear enough of them to move, then return attention to the boss. The Patriarch is one named boss in the official overview, but the practical rule applies to every boss encounter: rotate before your current position becomes impossible to defend.

Map movement and defensive positions

A map is a tactical system, not a backdrop. Before the first serious wave, identify how the trader connects to the play area, where a loop begins and ends, which sightlines support precision weapons, and which rooms become dead ends when doors or stairs are crowded.

Use a five-point map check

  1. Trader route: know the path and a backup route so a long run does not separate you from the team.
  2. Primary hold: choose a position with visibility and at least two ways to leave.
  3. Loop: trace a circuit you can run while shooting, rather than relying on a single doorway.
  4. Fallback: decide where the group will regroup if the first hold is breached.
  5. Rear approach: assign someone to watch the entrance that is easiest to forget.

Corridors and open ground behave differently

Biotics Labs is described as a maze-like environment with dense corridors. Corridors amplify close-range perks and area denial, but they also punish hesitation: once several Zeds occupy the passage, turning around may be impossible. Hold near an intersection rather than at the end of a blind hallway, and rotate while the next section is still clear.

Black Forest provides more open woodland space and different visibility demands. Open ground gives a mobile team room to kite and change angles, but trees and uneven sightlines can hide a rear approach. Precision perks should choose a stable lane, while the rest of the team checks side paths before committing to a long hold.

When to hold and when to rotate

  • Hold when the team has overlapping sightlines, the rear is clear and ammunition or health is stable.
  • Rotate when the only exit is being blocked, a large Zed reaches the front, several players are reloading, or the rear approach is no longer controlled.
  • Do not wait for certainty. The safest rotation is usually the one made while the route still has space. A late retreat turns a manageable wave into a chain of isolated deaths.

Modes and what changes for beginners

Mode Player objective Pacing Map or rule expectations Beginner suitability
Solo Survive the waves and boss alone Every flank and recovery decision is yours Standard wave progression without teammates to cover gaps Good for learning controls, trader flow and one map at a forgiving difficulty
Co-op / Survival Work together through waves and the boss More targets and more roles, with mistakes shared across the formation Standard cooperative maps and wave structure; listed capacity is up to six players Best starting point for learning team roles and callouts
Versus Survival Two teams alternate as humans and Zeds Competitive and less predictable than a standard AI wave Two teams of up to six; a match is described as four waves plus a boss wave Try after learning human-side movement and common Zed approaches
Objective Complete map-specific tasks while surviving attacks Progress is tied to objectives, not only to clearing a fixed wave Expect scripted or location-based movement and different priorities from Survival Learn the standard loop first, then follow the objective markers and team calls
Endless Continue through an extended progression until the team fails Escalates over time and tests resource management Progression and wave count differ from a normal finite match Useful for practice, but demanding when you are still learning trader spending
Weekly or event variants Meet the active rule set and finish its altered challenge Can change enemy behavior, weapons or other match conditions Rules are temporary and may change; read the current description before launching Play once the normal mode feels familiar so the special rule is the only new variable

Versus Survival deserves special attention because humans alternate between sides. As a human, preserve formation and routes; as a Zed, study how players defend chokepoints and attack their blind spots. Objective, Endless and event variants can alter the expected pace, so do not assume a Survival strategy transfers unchanged.

A practical first-session plan

Before launching

  • Choose Solo or Co-op/Survival on a forgiving difficulty.
  • Select one perk whose job is obvious to you; changing perks every wave makes it harder to learn weapon handling.
  • Enable voice or text communication if available, and agree on short calls such as “elite front,” “rotate” and “trader.”

During the first waves

  1. Stay with the group and learn where Zeds enter on that map.
  2. Buy the core weapon and enough ammunition to perform your role; do not spend every coin on an upgrade while leaving yourself unable to reload.
  3. Practice looking behind you between engagements so rear awareness becomes automatic.
  4. Watch how the team handles a Scrake or Fleshpound. Follow the focus-fire call instead of independently shooting a different target.

At the boss

  • Enter with a known fallback and enough ammunition for a prolonged fight.
  • Keep lesser Zeds from sealing the route, but return fire to the boss whenever the arena is navigable.
  • Spread out enough to avoid one attack affecting everyone, while remaining close enough for healing and rescue.
  • Rotate before the boss reaches the only doorway or the team’s health and ammunition are exhausted.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
You die while running to the trader The route was never learned or the team split up Mark the trader path during the first wave and leave together as soon as the intermission starts
The team is surrounded from behind Everyone watched the same sightline Assign rear awareness and choose a hold with two exits
A large Zed reaches the group repeatedly Damage was spread across minor enemies Call the threat early and focus it with the players best suited to precision or large-target damage
A corridor becomes impossible to leave The rotation started after the exit was blocked Move when pressure rises, not when the last retreat path disappears
You run out of ammunition every wave Too much automatic or explosive fire on low-risk targets Use the perk’s efficient weapon for ordinary Zeds and reserve burst damage for elites and dense groups
Shots seem ineffective against an elite The target is blocking or evading Stop firing into the defense, change angle or wait for an opening, and coordinate the attack
The team has damage but no recovery No player chose a healing or support role On the next trader visit, add Field Medic or another support-oriented perk, or play more conservatively around cover and rotations

What to remember after your first match

Start with one map and one perk. Learn the trader route, a loop and a fallback before experimenting with unusual builds or special modes. Stay close enough to receive help, preserve an escape route, and make the dangerous target the team’s shared priority. Killing Floor 2 rewards awareness more consistently than raw accuracy: the player who sees the flank, calls the rotation and keeps the formation intact is often the reason the boss wave is survivable.
