The Kilcoole Little Tern colony in County Wicklow, Ireland, had an exceptionally poor 2025 breeding season. Ireland’s National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) recorded the colony’s lowest estimated productivity in more than a decade and its fewest breeding pairs since 2014. The report describes conditions as “very poor from start to finish,” but does not establish one proven cause.
What happened at Kilcoole
Kilcoole is one of Ireland’s monitored Little Tern colonies. In 2025, bird numbers remained low, absences were frequent and prolonged, and observers saw little offshore fishing. Terns also appeared in unusually high numbers at smaller east-coast sites, raising the possibility that some prospecting pairs chose other locations instead of Kilcoole.
Those observations indicate an unusually weak season, but they do not demonstrate that food shortage, relocation or any other single factor caused the decline. The NPWS account records conditions and plausible explanations rather than a definitive diagnosis.
How 2025 differed from the record 2024 season
The contrast with 2024 was striking. In that record-breaking season, Kilcoole’s first egg was laid on 9 May, more than 100 nests were present by 15 May, many adults were seen returning with sandeels, and three-egg clutches were common. Those signs pointed to early establishment, strong attendance and favourable feeding conditions.

In 2025, the colony never showed the same momentum. Lower attendance and limited observed fishing meant fewer visible signs of sustained breeding activity. The colony’s productivity—the number of young produced relative to breeding pairs—fell to its lowest estimated level in over ten years.
Why was the 2025 season so poor?
The official report does not identify a proven cause. It found no unusually high predator presence early in the season and no beach disturbance beyond normal expectations. That makes it inappropriate to claim that predators, tourists or a confirmed food collapse alone caused the result.
Food availability is a possibility, not a confirmed explanation
Little offshore fishing was observed at Kilcoole, and the 2024 season had featured adults returning with sandeels. The change is consistent with altered prey access or feeding conditions, but observations at a colony cannot by themselves measure fish abundance offshore. The report therefore leaves food supply as a possibility rather than a demonstrated cause.

Some birds may have used other sites
Unusually high numbers at smaller east-coast sites suggest that some prospecting pairs may have avoided Kilcoole or shifted their search for breeding habitat. This could reduce Kilcoole’s pair count without proving that the birds disappeared from the wider region. Determining whether birds relocated would require coordinated monitoring across colonies, not just a count at one beach.
Weather, habitat and predators remain wider risks
Across Britain and Ireland, Little Terns face several recurring pressures:
- Human disturbance during nesting and chick-rearing
- Loss or degradation of suitable nesting habitat
- Extreme weather, flooding and coastal erosion
- Predation, including losses of eggs or chicks
- Vegetation encroachment on open nesting areas
These pressures can interact, and their importance can vary between colonies and years. The Kilcoole report’s findings do not show that any one of them was responsible for the 2025 outcome.

How Kilcoole fits the wider population picture
The poor Kilcoole result sits within a longer-term conservation concern but does not describe every colony’s season. The 2024 BTO/JNCC/RSPB monitoring report recorded 1,403 UK Little Tern breeding-abundance units and 0.25 chicks fledged per pair. Its Seabirds Count comparison found a 15% decline across Britain and Ireland between the Seabird 2000 and Seabirds Count censuses.
Those figures provide regional context, not a direct conversion of Kilcoole’s count. A single colony can have a very good or very bad year while the broader population follows a different short-term pattern.
Did every colony struggle in 2025?
No. RSPB reported substantially stronger outcomes at several English sites in 2025:

RSPB also reported that English Little Tern numbers were up 6.7% since 2019. Seabird Project Recovery Officer Chantal MacLeod-Nolan said: “Little Terns were in a downward spiral for years, so it’s wonderful to see early signs that they might be climbing back.” The English results show why colony-level monitoring matters: recovery can appear in one place while another colony has a disastrous season.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What protection can improve breeding prospects?
Conservation measures used for Little Terns include:
- Wardens who protect nesting areas and monitor breeding activity
- Signs and temporary barriers that keep people and dogs away from nests
- Predator fences around vulnerable colonies
- Diversionary feeding where managers use it as part of a site plan
- Habitat management to limit vegetation encroachment and maintain open nesting ground
These actions reduce preventable losses, but they cannot guarantee a successful season when feeding conditions, storms or flooding are unfavourable. Measures must be adapted to each colony’s shoreline, predator pressure and access to prey.

Evidence from another Irish colony
The 2024 Baltray colony report illustrates how outcomes can change within a season. It recorded 201 hatchlings, with 156—77%—hatching in June. The report also documented egg losses caused by abandonment, corvid predation and high tides, and described a seasonal decline in hatching success. Baltray is not a substitute measure for Kilcoole, but it demonstrates how timing, predators and tides can shape results even within one breeding year.
What to watch in future Kilcoole reports
The most useful indicators will be breeding-pair numbers, nest totals, hatching and fledging success, attendance patterns, observed foraging, storm or flooding impacts, predator activity and records from nearby east-coast sites. Comparing those measures across several years can help separate a temporary redistribution of birds from a sustained local decline.
